The Motorola MR350 offers one of the widest ranges available at 35 miles under ideal conditions (line of sight), though reports say that that the two-way radio will rarely attain that range under typical conditions. The 22 FRS/GMRS channels and 121 privacy codes make it easy to find a clear channel to talk on, and make it less likely than outsiders will listen in. Outdoor sportsmen (or sportswomen) will likely appreciate the ability set the call alert to vibrate rather than issue an audible tone. The extra-large buttons that are easy to operate even with gloves are another plus. Support of the NOAA weather channels can keep you posted of changing conditions while you are out in the field, and there's an emergency call feature that let's you reach out to others in your group to let them know of any possible dangers. If you'd find the addition of a GPS device to be a worthy plus to your outdoor pursuits, the Garmin Rino 530HCx (*Est. $385 each) combines a powerful two-way FRS/GMRS radio and handheld GPS into one relatively compact device. Though the 530HCx is pricey, it scores well with experts and owners.
The Motorola MR350 gets a not-too-long but still helpful professional review at Outside magazine. A selection of user reviews can be read at Amazon.com and Walmart.com.

Stephen Regenold and a partner test a pair of Motorola MR350 two-way radios while setting up a wilderness racecourse in the Minnesota woods. Regenold is able to maintain a strong signal for 5 miles, finding that trees and hills do not degrade the signal. He likes the channel-scan feature that helps find clear channels and the backlit display. Regenold reports nine hours of use on a single charge, and says that AA batteries can be substituted for the battery pack if necessary.
