Good safety features. The Cybex Ruby has a fully adjustable, five-point harness and one-touch, linked brakes. It locks closed automatically when folded, preventing accidental opening.

In January 2010, Regal Lager, the company that distributes Cybex strollers in the U.S., issued a voluntary recall of Cybex Ruby, Topaz and Onyx strollers sold between August and November 2009. The hinge on the stroller poses a risk of amputation or injury. Consumers owning one of these models can contact the company for a hinge repair kit.

Ease of use

Push, lift, carry, clean? No problem. Experts and owners agree that the Cybex Ruby is very easy to use, with an easy fold that can be done one-handed. The levers to lock brakes and wheels are simple to engage. It's lightweight at just 13 pounds, which makes it easy to lift and carry. It's easy to push, and experts say it maneuvers well.

The Ruby's fabric is removable and washable, though one parent warns that attaching the canopy takes some muscle. The Ruby has removable/replaceable wheels and handles so that you won't have to scrap the entire stroller when the wearable parts give out.

Lifestyle features

Exceptional sun protection. The Cybex Ruby's most distinctive feature is its large, SPF 50 UV-protected, adjustable canopy. It has a zipper extension to extend it to almost completely cover the passenger. It does not have a window, but side mesh openings allow you to see your child and provide ventilation so it doesn't get too stuffy in the seat.

With a maximum weight capacity of 55 pounds, the Cybex Ruby has one of the highest weight ratings of an umbrella stroller, but it draws a few complaints from experts and parents about its less structured seat, which may allow some children to slouch. However, the seat is relatively wide (about 13 inches) with a tall (22 inches) seat back. The canopy slides up the frame so that very tall toddlers will remain comfortable. Multiple owners comment that the Cybex Ruby's tall, 41-inch handle accommodates even very tall pushers and that they won't kick the back of the stroller when walking. It gets good reviews for its push, but only on smooth surfaces. The front swivel wheels lock, which will help on bumpier terrain somewhat, but this is not a multi-terrain stroller; it's best used in malls and on well-paved sidewalks.

The Ruby only offers a partial-recline seat back, so the stroller alone is suitable only from 6 months and up, but it can accept a variety of infant car seats with an optional adapter (*Est. $25). However, at least one expert reviewer warns that this is not a travel system and is not built to hold up to heavy-duty travel system use. It's small fold enables it to fit in almost any trunk.

The Ruby has a typically small, but not impossible-to-reach, under-seat basket and four spots for cup holders, which are also sold separately. A rain shield is available (sold separately) for protection in cold, wet weather.

Customer service

Good response to customers. Owners have good things to say about Cybex's customer service. The company is quick to respond and replace faulty components when contacted. Cybex strollers carry a better than average two-year warranty.

Bottom line

The Cybex Ruby is an umbrella stroller that is almost full featured -- with a high weight capacity, huge canopy and car seat adaptability. It doesn't offer a ton of extras (car seat adapter, rain cover and cup holders sold separately), but it has solid, high-quality construction and a good design for most parents and children.
