Most durable USB flash drive
- Aircraft-grade aluminum casing
- Impervious to the elements
- 10-year warranty
- Average transfer speeds
- Bulky
- Mac users will need to download software
March 2009. Reviewers say the Corsair Flash Survivor and Corsair Flash Voyager (*est. $40 for 8 GB) are the best USB flash drives for portable data storage, proving fast in tests. The Survivor sets itself apart by withstanding medieval-style punishments, such as being boiled like a lobster. The exterior is made of aircraft-grade aluminum, but some reviews say this durability (and the 10-year warranty) may be overkill. Some reviewers also say the cap comes loose. The Flash Voyager is available in 16 GB (*est. $55) and 32 GB (*est. $80) sizes as well, and they are compatible with Mac and Linux as well as Windows, although the included encryption software is Windows-only (Mac users can download compatible software). PCMag.com's reviewer Eric Griffith compares the drive's size to that of a roll of Lifesavers candy; if you want a slimmer USB flash drive, consider the similar Flash Voyager, which costs about the same but lacks the impervious casing.

Tests includes boiling the Corsair Flash Survivor GT for more than 10 minutes and whacking it several times with a hammer. On a tamer note, reviewer Michael Larabel says the transfer rate is pretty good, and the drive is compatible with Linux, making it worth the price.

2. PCMag.com
The Flash Survivor takes a dip underwater and gets dropped down stairs to no ill effect in this hands-on review. Transfer speeds are merely average, but it's still called a "spectacular" performer. One downside is that if you lose the screw-on cap, your drive isn't protected from the elements.
Review: Corsair Flash Survivor (32GB), Eric Griffith, June 27, 2008
The Corsair Flash Survivor is one of 19 drives tested by this anonymous reviewer, but it is primary compared with the two other tough drives in the test, the Flash Voyager and the ATP ToughDrive Mini. Performance of the Voyager is in the middle, but the drive is commended for its durability.
