Reviews say the Corsair Flash Survivor GT is the best USB flash drive for portable data storage, proving fast in tests and withstanding medieval-style punishments, such as being boiled like a lobster. The exterior is made of aircraft-grade aluminum, and some reviews say this durability (and the ten-year warranty) may be overkill for some users. Some reviews say the cap comes loose, though. Newer models are available with up to 32 GB of memory (*est. $95) and are now compatible with Mac and Linux as well as Windows, although Mac users will have to download to make the encryption device work. If you want a flash drive with U3 capability (storing applications as well as data), reviews suggest the SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 4 GB (*est. $20).
We found the best reviews at specialty websites like Phoronix.com, BigBruin.com, I4U.com and EverythingUSB.com. All of them do hands-on testing and are unbiased in their assessments, but their observations about pricing are now outdated because street prices dropped dramatically in 2008. We found only about two dozen owner reviews at Amazon.com, encompassing various Corsair Flash Survivor storage capacities, and one user includes a brief video review.

Our Sources
1. Phoronix.com
Testing includes boiling the Corsair Flash Survivor GT for more than ten minutes and whacking it several times with a hammer. On a tamer note, the review says the transfer rate is pretty good, and there's Linux compatibility, making it worth its then-high price.
Review: Corsair Flash Survivor GT 8GB Review, Michael Larabel, May 23, 2007
2. BigBruin.com
Big Bruin offers very detailed reviews of many flash drives and includes objective testing. The Corsair Flash Survivor GT gets a "recommended" tag, but the review notes that it would be "highly recommended" if it were cheaper (prices have dropped since).
Review: Corsair Flash Survivor GT 8GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Review, Jason Kohrs, June 20, 2007
3. I4U.com
Reviewer Shane McGlaun gives the Corsair Flash Survivor GT an 8.5 out of ten, saying it's a "real winner," although the cap came loose during "wash and dry" tests and the speed in testing fell short of the company's claims.
Review: Corsair 8GB Flash Survivor GT Review, Shane McGlaun, Aug. 23, 2007
Reviews here are thorough and based on testing, but there's no overall score or ranking. The gist is the Corsair Flash Survivor is extremely durable and fast, although the end cap came loose.

5. Amazon.com
About two dozen owner reviews give the Corsair Flash Survivor a good average score, with just a few complaints and no common thread on those. Note that these reviews encompass a variety of storage capacities, not just the 8 GB version. There's a decent video review here, too.
