This data traveler is good. I haven't had any problems with it at all.

Good deal for the money, easy to use, but slow write speed, November 16, 2009

Just to clarify, since it seems sometimes review for other products get mixed in - I'm reviewing the Kingston DataTraveler I - 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DTI/4GBET (White/Purple) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] PROS: - Cheap - Does The Job - Read speed is fairly quick CONS: - Write speeds are very slow As a test a copied a folder containing 900 megabytes worth of various size files in it to and from this flash drive. TEST RESULSTS: - It took almost 10 minutes !!! to copy the folder TO the flash drive from a computer. Crazy slow! - It only took about 45 seconds to copy the folder FROM the flash drive back to a computer. Pretty fast. If you're not concerned about speed, this is a good bargain and a fine cheap way to store some backup data or move a few files around. If you're looking for speed, I would suggest a different product / brand.

Works perfectly, November 16, 2009
I have been using the 4GB stick for almost a year now. It has worked flawlessly in every computer I have tried. Fast and reliable. (I had a different experience with the 32GB version of this same model.)

Our Sources

1. Amazon.com

Although the headline suggests that it's the 8 GB version of the Kingston DataTraveler DT1 that is being reviewed, various drive sizes are included among the more than 1,000 owner reviews. The average score is very high, with only about 12 percent of users -- most of whom cite bugs or slow drives -- giving it fewer than four out of five stars.

2. ExtremeOverclocking.com

This website is commercial enough to raise suspicion, but this review is honest and calls the Kingston DataTraveler a "no-frills drive" that looks good and is good value for the money.

3. TomsHardware.com

Schmid and Veltze test 12 drives, assessing access time, read-transfer and write-transfer capabilities. The Kingston DataTraveler 1 GB version finishes last in access time and in the middle of the pack otherwise; the model reviewed is a U3-capable version.

4. TrustedReviews.com

The British website Trusted Reviews covers lots of flash drives, although the closest it comes to the Kingston DataTraveler DT1 4 GB is this review of a discontinued and expensive Kingston DataTraveler Secure. In general, Kingston products overall are praised.

This blog is a side project of the editor of IT trade journal Computerworld. Although this is primarily a review of the Lexar 4GB JumpDrive Lightning, four products are tested for speed, and the Kingston DataTraveler Secure is rated second in data-transfer rate.
