small yet heavy, September 18, 2009

i bought this vacuum after using two friend's larger model dysons. love how powerful those models are and the ease of emptying the canisters. this smaller vacuum is as efficient as the larger ones. the emptying process is the same ... yay! the house seems fresher with use than my old regular vacuum. no dust put back into the air while turned on. and no battling with opening and cleaning of the filter. yay! only complaint is that this small vacuum is heavier than i expected.

Heavy, unbalanced, awkward..., September 4, 2009

I clean homes for a living, so I've had opportunities to try quite a few vacuum cleaner designs. One customer has a Dyson - a somewhat older design than this listing's offering, which I used for several hours yesterday. I found that switching from the upright mode to the hose mode is made unnecessarily awkward by the vacuum's design. The wand's full length is supposed to fit inside the hose for storage and half the time I'd need to store it, it would snag inside the ridges on the plastic hose and I'd have to remove it and start over. There's no switch to change the suction from the upright mode to the hose, you must have the wand and hose combination completely stowed on the upright in order to activate the upright mode's suction. This necessity is quite frustrating when moving around a home to vacuum under-bed areas and corners which require the hose, to area rugs in the center of the room, which require the upright. Also, the machine is poorly balanced and tipped over repeatedly (once on my head) as I maneuvered the hose to reach beneath beds and into recessed corners. Fortunately, the home was all on one level, as this machine was surprisingly heavy for it's slim size. Although, as I said, the one I used seemed not to be this year's model, I would not buy a vacuum from this manufacturer after experiencing design problems that made it so difficult to use. I'm surprised at the high price for this machine, and I'd recommend a better designed and lighter Meile vacuum to anyone who has so much money to spend.

Overpriced and Unreliable. Don't expect any support from Dyson, August 16, 2009

This is the first time I've written any sort of online review of anything. I'm generally too lethargic to pipe up. I AM THAT ANGRY RIGHT NOW. My Dyson DC18 Slim has never, in it's best days, performed better than a regular old Hoover or Bissel stand up costing about a quarter of the price. I'll give it points for aesthetics, and kudos to the marketing team. The thing looks good sitting around the house while I wait for it to come back from it's Blanche DuBois swoon and do some actual vacuuming. The damn thing overheats and just shuts off under normal conditions. Dyson support is pretty much non-existant. Go to the slick looking web site, and after going down the rabbit hole of model selections and the specifics of your issue, you're directed to call the toll free number which seems to be on a constant outgoing message stating the hours of operation. Today, I called smack dab in the middle of the stated hours of operation, and got the same message. After a year or so of nursing this thing along, I think it has finally quit for good. In regard to Dyson, I'd just like to go on record as saying, THEY DO LOSE SUCTION !!!! but they don't stop Sucking.

JUNK, August 3, 2009

I read all the great reviews on this product and dove in head first. Big mistake. It did a bang up job the first two weeks and then I started having problems. I had to take the machine apart after ever use - cut the long hair (mine) out of the beater bar, pull out the clumps of dust caught in the area where there is no brush, completely clean out everything. That revamped it for a few weeks. Then it started leaving dirt clumps around the carpet causing me to have to use the wand to suck up the clumps. The suction seemed fine on the wand but not on the beater bar which does the majority of the work. I don't have the time or effort to vacuum my house using just the wand. Then the wand stopped going all the way into the holder. Luckily I was able to return this crap to the store for a full refund. You do not always get what you pay for. I turned around and purchased a $129 Bissell at Target that immediately showed me all the stuff the Dyson wasn't picking up. Too bad because I had hoped to purchase a higher end model had this done the job.

Great Vacuum, August 1, 2009

This vacuum was everything it said it was. Versatile, slim, well designed. I have a three story town home and a medium sized lab - beagle mix who sheds like crazy. The Slim has just the right capacity to take care of my dog's hair and dust. I do have to empty the canister after every use but I don't mind; it is a quick and simple process. The Slim also makes cleaning the stairs, hardwood floors and carpet easy because of the way they designed switching between the regular vacuum and using attachments.
