Vacuums: When Smaller Isn't Better
by Editors of Consumer Reports
Our Assessment

At the time of this report, editors at Consumer Reports had already rated 36 upright vacuums, with 15 more reportedly still in testing. Each vacuum is evaluated for cleaning ability on carpet and bare floors, as well as with tools. Vacuums are also scored on noise, emissions, ease of use and on pet-hair removal. Consumer Reports' methodology is consistent and extremely thorough, making this the most valuable review we found. Online videos here offer buying advice. Also included are the results of an annual reader survey judging brand reliability.

Vacuum Cleaners
by Editors of Which?
Our Assessment

This British equivalent of Consumer Reports tests vacuums regularly. We like that editors specifically test performance on different floor types. In the latest roundup, editors thoroughly test 99 models from 19 different brands (including canister, upright and handheld models). Dyson cleans up in the upright category, claiming seven out of eight Best Buy ratings. Unlike about half of the vacuum cleaners tested at Which?, the Dyson line is available in the United States.

Buying Guide: Vacuum Cleaners
by Editors of Choice
Our Assessment

Choice magazine is an Australian counterpart to Consumer Reports. Editors divide vacuum ratings into four price categories and test them using 100 grams of sand that is vacuumed up in 16 strokes. The sand is then removed from the vacuum cleaner and weighed to determine the vacuum's efficiency. Choice tests 52 upright and canister vacuums, many of which are not available in the United States. Editors recommend 24 models in their "What to buy" listings. Interestingly, editors of Choice do not recommend the Dyson DC14, one of Which? magazine's top picks.

Upright Vacuums
by Contributors to Amazon.com
Our Assessment

We found the best owner reports on vacuum cleaners at Amazon.com. Reviews are especially prolific for Dyson uprights, with well over 1,000 posts. Some owners of the Dyson DC17 compare it to the DC14, saying the DC17 is quieter, more powerful and easier to push. Various versions of the iRobot Roomba receive a lot of evaluations. The Eureka 4870GZ has nearly 1,000 mostly positive reviews, and the Hoover U5140-900 Tempo Widepath is also a favorite here, averaging near-perfect scores.

Ventilating, Vacuuming and Filtering Out Allergens
by Emily Main
Our Assessment This brief article discusses High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters and allergen source control. Reporter Emily Main recommends the Eureka Boss, Boss 4D and Boss SmartVac vacuums, along with the SEBO X4 and X5 uprights, and the Dyson brand in general. However, it does not appear that any specific testing of these models was performed, and no product comparisons are provided.

Vacuum Cleaner Reviews
by Sarah Aguirre
Our Assessment

About.com housekeeping guide Sarah Aguirre reviews eight vacuums including the Dyson DC15 and the Oreck XL 21. She goes into a reasonable amount of detail and includes one or two negatives for each vacuum cleaner. Aguirre also makes a few comparisons with other vacuums and appears to have casually tested most of the models. Aguirre never chooses any particular model as best, however, and we can't tell when these reviews were written. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

Best Vacuum Cleaners
by Editors of Good Housekeeping
Our Assessment

In this undated video report, editors say they tested 11 upright vacuums on carpet and hardwood floors. Only the top five are discussed, and the other models are not identified. The Hoover Savvy is recommended for cleaning deep dirt, but so is the Dirt Devil Cruiser. The Eureka Boss is noted as the best value, and the Kenmore Progressive bagging vacuum is recommended to allergy sufferers. It's clear these were tested, but details are sparse, and it's hard to find this video on the website. You have to search for "vacuum cleaners."

Best Vacuums
by Nathaniel Benforado
Our Assessment

This short article describes four vacuum cleaners: the Electrolux Intensity EL5020, Dyson Slim DC18, Halo UVX and iRobot Roomba 560. While Benforado mostly lists features and positives, the author does include two negatives -- the Electrolux's lack of attachments and the Roomba's inability to deep clean. There's no information given about how or even whether vacuums were tested before being included.

The Ten Best Vacuum Cleaners
by David Phelan
Our Assessment The Independent, a newspaper based in the U.K., has an article listing the author's picks for the top 10 vacuum cleaners. While it's useful that the models are ranked, there's no discussion of any negatives and no explanation of how models were chosen and assessed. The Electrolux Intensity and the Dyson DC18 Slim are the only two vacuums here that are consistent with top reviewers' picks.

Stealthier Sweeping
by Sara Schaefer Mu–oz
Our Assessment

Sara Schaefer Mu-oz tests four vacuum cleaners: the Electrolux Oxygen3 Ultra with Quiet Clean powerhead and Miele Callisto (both canister vacs), the upright Healthy Home Vacuum, and the Oreck XL21 Titanium Upright with IntellaShield Technology. Testing evaluates only their claims of being quieter than other vacuum cleaners -- vacuums are run while the tester attempts to make a phone call. Bissell's Healthy Home Vacuum and the Oreck upright are considered noisier than other vacuums tested.

Upright Vacuums
by Contributors to ExpoTV
Our Assessment

ExpoTV is built on user-posted video reviews, which makes it an interesting alternative to written owner reviews at sites like Amazon.com. There's considerable variation in the quality of individual contributions, but it's often useful to actually see (instead of just read about) features and functions. Most vacuum cleaners included here -- about 60 models in total -- get only one or two reviews. The Dyson DC14 and Bissell PowerForce get better coverage, with more than a dozen posts each.

Reviews for Upright Vacuums
by Contributors to Viewpoints.com
Our Assessment Viewpoints.com is a community review site with an unusually broad scope: Contributors cover everything from universities to vitamin supplements. There's a decent section on vacuums here, with basic coverage of more than 60 models. Navigation at Viewpoints.com is easy and intuitive, and many of the reviews are quite detailed.

Vacuum Cleaners
by Contributors to ReviewCentre.com
Our Assessment ReviewCentre.com has mixed vacuum coverage, with individual models getting anywhere from a handful to nearly a hundred individual reviews. Entries tend to be shorter here than at Epinions.com and Viewpoints.com, and some of the models included in this U.K.-based site aren't available in the United States.
Ristenbatt Vacuum's Preferred Models
by David E. Ristenbatt
Our Assessment

This retailer sells more than 75 different models of cleaners and publishes comprehensive product summaries, features and specifications on a limited number of models. Preferred picks include the SEBO Automatic X4/X5, Lindhaus RX 380 and Sanitaire SC888J/S677D/S647E/SC684F-2. There's great information here about types of cleaners, filter differences and agitator types. Because there's no independent testing information -- and because models recommended here are also sold here -- this site has limited scope.

Vacuum Cleaners: For Rugs, Carpets and Bare Floors
by Editors of Allergy Buyers Club
Our Assessment

This retail site, which includes many comparison charts and articles, focuses on the needs of allergy sufferers. Vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters are recommended for people who need maximum removal of allergens. While this is a good site for health information and articles for allergy sufferers, the recommendations must be taken with a grain of salt, and it's interesting that the highest ratings go to the most expensive machines.

Upright Vacuum Cleaners Reviews and Prices
by Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
Our Assessment ConsumerGuide.com reviews a number of vacuums, but write-ups for the models featured here are entirely based on features and specifications. No product testing appears to have been performed at all, which makes this source less valuable. Best Buy awards are given to 14 vacuums, but it's difficult to tell exactly why editors chose these over others.

Upright Vacuum Cleaners
by Contributors to Epinions.com
Our Assessment Most vacuum ratings on this consumer-opinion website are positive, so it's difficult to get any idea of which models might be better than others. There are more comments here for Dyson vacuums than others, and the mainly positive postings are peppered with a few who say the pet-hair brush does not work as advertised. The Eureka 4870 gets a more mixed response here than at Amazon.com.

Vacuum Cleaners & Floor Care Appliances -- The Latest New Products
by Editors of Appliance.com
Our Assessment Although Appliance.com does not offer reviews or testing of upright vacuums, they do describe new models in extensive detail -- interesting if you're really into vacuums. There's no comparison information here, however. Helpful buying guides and articles with general information about the different types of vacuums and features are also available on this website.
