Some reviewers say Sebo Automatic X-Series vacuum cleaners (including the Sebo X4 and X5) are some of the best vacuums on the market for people with allergies or asthma. However, a European test contradicts those assertions, and experts and owners alike say the Sebo X5 can be unwieldy and difficult to maneuver. Some U.S. owners swear by Sebo upright vacuums, even though the Sebo X5 costs twice or three times as much as others. If you'd rather spend less, the Eureka Boss SmartVac 4870MZ (*Est. $140) performs very well in professional tests and uses HEPA filtration to reduce allergen exposure.
ConsumerReports.org does not includes Sebo upright vacuums in its most recent roundup of vacuum cleaners, but Australia's Choice magazine tests the Sebo X5 and the U.K.'s Which? magazine tests a similar model, the Sebo X4. AllergyBuyersClub.com gives the Sebo X5 a very high rating, but they sell this model on their site. We also found a handful of user reviews for the Sebo X5 at Epinions.com.

1. Choice magazineDetails/Subscribe
Choice magazine, the Australian counterpart to ConsumerReports.org and Which? magazine, puts 15 pricey vacuum cleaners, including the Sebo X5, to the test in this report. Each vacuum is rated based on its ability to pick up pet hair and other materials both with an empty and partially filled bag or bin. Noise and ease of use are also compared.

2. Which? magazineDetails/Subscribe
Which? magazine is the U.K. counterpart to ConsumerReports.org, with the same reputation for rigorous independent testing and unbiased ratings. The Sebo X4 (similar to the Sebo X5) is among 108 vacuum cleaners tested. Each gets a breakdown of specs and test results along with a short well-balanced review.
Review: Vacuum Cleaners, Editors of Which? magazine, Updated Oct. 2009
This is a retail site, but the editors do point out the negatives of the vacuums they sell as well as the positive aspects. The Sebo X4 and X5 are praised for their reliability, power, and solid build, but are described as a bit bulky. Because of their extreme suction, they are not a good choice for delicate rugs.
