Bottom line

Among full-sized laundry centers, the GE GTUN275EMWW (Est. $1,400) stands out as a top choice. It has enough capacity to handle a typical family's laundry load and the performance to do a good job getting it all cleaned and dried. It's Energy Star qualified, and has a few extras not found on less-expensive competitors. Just be careful how you load things as this laundry center's washer can easily fall out of balance.

Breaking it down

Gets clothes clean. We didn't spot any commentary from top-quality professional reviewers, but owners have plenty to say about the GE GTUN275EMWW, and most of it is positive. It earns good ratings at most user review sites, with a clear majority recommending it as a worthwhile purchase. The washer holds 3.4 cubic feet of clothes, while the dryer has a 5.9 cubic-foot capacity, which  should be sufficient for a typical family. Washing and drying performance is good for this class of appliance. Some reliability problems are  reported, though causes vary. One issue that's oft cited is that the laundry center needs to be loaded with care as the washer is very susceptible to unbalanced loads.

Appearance and ergonomics

Full-sized. If you have a narrow space, the GE GTUN275EMWW is likely to not be a good fit -- literally. It measures 27 inches across, the same as a conventional washer. Consisting of a top-load washer below combined with a dryer above, it's advantage over stacking washer and dryer separates is that it's overall height is lower (75.5 inches versus 80 inches or more), which could help it fit into spots where separates won't work. Some users might also appreciate not having to reach as high to use their appliances. Like all laundry centers, you'll need water hookups and venting to the outside. If you opt for the gas version, the GE GTUN275GMWW (Est. $1,500), you will also need a gas hookup.

A few nice touches. The GE GTUN275EMWW isn't long on features, but a few nice things are included. Perhaps most notable is the fact that the unit is Energy Star qualified (for the washer, as dryers are not part of that program). The washer basket is stainless steel. You can set water levels by hand, or let the dryer do that for you depending on load. There are bleach and fabric softener dispensers. You'll find nine washer cycles and four dryer cycles. The dryer lacks a moisture sensor, drying rack, and many pluses found on higher-end stand-alone machines
