The GE WJRE5500GWW washing machine has been discontinued. It is a very good, basic top loader that does well in tests for washing performance. It has a roomy 3.5-cubic-foot capacity, a stainless-steel tub, 18 wash cycles and automatic temperature controls. It also has rotary controls and an automatic load balancer -- a feature that is disappearing from many less expensive top loaders. The main complaint from owners, who say the GE WJRE5500GWW is a quiet washing machine, is that the spin cycle is not as fast as on high-efficiency washers, which means it takes longer for clothes to dry. The GE WJRE5500GWW also isn't Energy Star-compliant, making it less efficient than other washers. If you want a more efficient front loader, the Amana NFW7200TW (Discontinued) is a good choice, although it costs more.
