Breaking it down

Performance

A top performer. Experts have few quibbles when it comes to the cleaning prowess of the Kenmore Elite 41072. It earns a rating of Excellent in washing performance by one independent product review organization. At Reviewed.com, tester Jonathan Chan concurs, saying, "The Normal cycle, which engages Accela-Wash, took only 38 minutes, powered through stains, and spun out plenty of excess water. We couldn't ask for anything better." Megan Wollerton at CNET is similarly complimentary, noting this washer's, "consistently high marks when it came to stain removal and overall gentleness." Owners are also pleased with the Kenmore Elite 41072/41073, praising its great cleaning performance; many specifically note that it wrings out enough water in the spin cycle to shorten drying time, too. Pet owners love the sanitize cycle that they say gives them peace of mind when cleaning bedding they share with their furry friends. Speed can be an issue with larger loads on the Heavy Duty cycle, but that's common with agitator-less HE washers because they continually sense and rebalance loads -- the bigger the load, them more often it has to happen. However, as noted above, Accela-Wash (which speeds up the cycle times) on Normal takes only 38 minutes and there's an Express Wash option that cuts cycle times to just 15 minutes. With a total capacity of 5.2 cubic feet, the Kenmore Elite 41072 is plenty large enough for just about any job -- however, be warned -- this is one giant washing machine. Great for large families, but make sure the beast fits where you want to put it.

Efficiency

Top efficiency. The Kenmore Elite 41072 and the identical except for color Kenmore Elite 41073 provide Excellent efficiency according to testing at ConsumerReports.org, as well as Very Good Water efficiency. Both washers also receive a 2016 Energy Star Most Efficient designation. Energy.gov estimates the yearly energy cost of this washer at $14, when used with an electric water heater, or $10, when used with a natural gas water heater.

Features

Pretty packed. In addition to the popular Accela-Wash feature on the Kenmore Elite 41072, experts and owners particularly like the steam technology and Stay Fresh -- which gives the laundry that you don't get out of the washer right away the occasional spin to keep it fresh. With 14 washing programs, and 12 washing options, five spin settings (including no spin) and five soil level settings, most users will find the right combination for any laundry challenge. Expert and user reviewers also love the control panel, saying it's attractive, intuitive and very easy to see and use.

Value

You get a lot for what you'll probably pay. While the Kenmore Elite 41072 retails for a hefty $1,650, in reality, it's almost always priced at about $1,000; $1,100 for the otherwise identical Kenmore Elite 41073 in metallic silver. If you have a large family, experts agree, you can't do much better for the price. Feature-packed, a superior cleaner, a couple of fast wash options, Energy Start certification and a sub-$1,000 price makes the Kenmore Elite 41072/41073 a terrific value.
