Made from nontoxic, unlined stainless steel, the Klean Kanteen is a popular bottle that's durable and dishwasher-safe. You get a choice of a polypropylene sport, loop or flat cap -- all free of bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical that has been the source of much controversy over possible health concerns -- and you can also purchase a stainless-steel loop or flat cap (*Est. $6). Reviewers say the Klean Kanteen is remarkably durable for a metal water bottle; it suffers a few minor dents in drop tests, and it survives being run over by a car. Most comparative tests that we've seen indicate that the Klean Kanteen is more durable than the popular Sigg water bottles. The Klean Kanteen also has a wider mouth than the Sigg bottles, so it easily accommodates ice cubes. Owners give the Klean Kanteen high marks, with most saying the bottle doesn't impart a metallic taste on their water and a tight seal helps prevent leaks. However, the Klean Kanteen is not insulated, so it does sweat in hot weather, which some reviewers find annoying. Some also report that the sports cap makes an annoying squeak. Overall, though, reviewers give the Klean Kanteen excellent reviews. To save some money, you can also take a look at the top-rated CamelBak Better Bottle (*Est. $10 for 25-oz. bottle). This BPA-free plastic bottle gets high marks for durability, and it's significantly cheaper than the Klean Kanteen.

Many consumers consider both Sigg and Klean Kanteen when choosing a metal water bottle, and several publications conduct comparative reviews of the two bottles. Wired, Men's Journal, and Time magazines, as well as the blog Gardenaut and Slate.com all test both metal water bottles. Wired's test is the best source, since they provide a numerical rating and great details on their testing. User reviews of the Klean Kanteen are plentiful, especially at Amazon.com.
