LEAKS!!!!!!, November 18, 2009

If you buy this, save the packaging to return it because it will leak...it is only a matter of time. If you are extremely gentle with how you handle the unit, it will last a bit longer before leaking (that is, don't push on the unit to reposition faucet). The price is too high for the lack of quality. Get an under-sink unit and save yourself the hassle. I find that the unit gets in the way of filling large pots and pitchers in the sink and the bumping around contributes to the unit leaking. The filtered water is good and dispenses faster than I thought it would with our low water pressure.

Horrible product and customer support, November 17, 2009
We just purchased this faucet filter just a couple of days ago. The water came out in a steady stream the first day, but now it does not pour directly down put along the filter... Tried to access they support on the PUR site... but it's absolutely awful and disrespectful towards it's customers. I would not recommend this..
Leaky system - don not recommend, November 15, 2009
This system is simply bad. By the end of the first filter I had installed, the system was leaking significantly. By the ens of the 2nd filter I had installed, it was leaking profusely. The PUR web site stinks for customer support. I am looking for a replacement product right now. Please do not waste your money on this product.
Water Seems Pure, but the Hardware is Poor, November 14, 2009

I've been using these PUR water filter units for several years. I like the convenience and the quality of the water, but I'm getting very tired of the problems with the hardware itself. This turns out to be quite an expensive unit because the faucet mount has never lasted more than three filters for me. Another issue is that the filters really don't last very long. In just a short time the "green" led will start to flash yellow and then red. I usually keep it on red for as long as possible to get as much out of it as I can. But the water flow will progressively lessen over time until a filter change is essential. I've had leaky units that needed replacement. I've had units break right off the faucet because of a blast of water pressure when the faucet is first turned on. And my last unit had such a problem unscrewing the cap for filter replacement that I broke the unit off the faucet when trying to twist it. Another $40 down the drain. Even with all of the replacements, it is probably still cheaper than bottled water, but not by much and I'm sure getting tired of having to buy another unit every 4-6 months. Usually the unit doesn't last much longer than the two filters included in the mount kits I buy. Overall, I would give this product two stars (instead of one) because the water does seem purified through the 3 stage filter.

Good Product, November 12, 2009

I was hesitant to buy this product after reading the bad reviews. However, I didn't have any problems with the hardware: it didn't crack, break or anything. Also, I was concerned when I read that the amount of water that comes out when you use the PUR filter would be little, but mine works fine. Water tastes good, I'm very happy with PUR. Maybe I was lucky, but based on what I got, I would highly recommend it to friends.

Our Sources

1. ConsumerReports.org

Based on objective tests, editors rank the PUR FM9400 in comparison with three other faucet-mounted water filters and 23 additional water filters of other types. Ratings include how well each model removes bad tastes, lead and chloroform (as an indicator of ability to remove other organic compounds as well).

2. Good Housekeeping

This review recommends the PUR faucet-mounted water filters despite the fact that the flow rate is slower than that of a Culligan filter. Both brands produce water that tastes good, but the PUR filters out far more contaminants -- which editors here find much more important than flow rate.

3. The Shopping Bags

Lab tests done for this review find all four of the water filters adequate for removing metals and even some coliform bacteria, so informal taste tests become the deciding factor. The PUR faucet-mounted water filter (and PUR pitcher) get the most votes for the best tasting water.

4. TheGreenGuide.com

The PUR FM9400 faucet-mounted water filter is named the "Greenest Product" in the comparison chart in this buyer's guide, but it's not clear why. The chart is based partly on the NSF database of contaminants the filter removes.

5. ConsumerGuide.com

A similar but earlier PUR faucet-mounted water filter (with a vertical design) earns a "Best Buy" rating here, based partly on its superior three-stage filter. Ratings are especially high for performance and ease of use, though the reviewer finds filter changing awkward.

6. TheKitchn.com

Informal blind taste tests compare tap water, bottled water and water filtered through the PUR. They both like the filtered water, but the author notes that the filter leaks, and quite a few readers comment that they've had the same experience.

7. Apartment Therapy.com

Based on convenience and economy rather than on filtering effectiveness, editors of ApartmentTherapy.com recommend the Brita Faucet Mount Water Filter over PUR faucet-mount filters. Brita model gets in the way less than the PUR, has a better bypass switch, and the Brita filters last longer.

8. Amazon.com

At the time of our report, over a hundred owners review the PUR FM-9400 horizontal faucet-mount water filter here, giving it quite mixed ratings. The most frequent complaints are about leaks and early breakdowns.

One disgusted owner posted a video of a leaking PUR faucet filter. Viewers add comments -- some pro, some con -- and there's a link to a way to diminish such a leak on the same model.
