The Midland HH54VP2 is one of the few handheld weather radio models that offers SAME technology and Public Alert certification. This weather radio's small size makes it convenient for those who need to grab it and go in a hurry, though owners commonly complain this little beast can be a serious battery hog.
A strong performer with a hunger for batteries. Most users report getting excellent reception with the Midland HH54VP2 and are pleased with the volume its small speaker provides. Some reception challenges are noted under certain conditions, however, such as from inside a camper or RV. Still, the biggest complaint is over battery life. Owners say the HH54VP2 runs down quickly when away from its charging cradle. While the emergency radio can accept standard AA batteries, the HH54VP2 burns through those rather quickly.
Functional without the frills. The HH54VP2 is one of the few pocket-sized weather radios that features SAME technology and is Pubic Alert certified. However, the nine county codes the unit can store are fewer than found in the best weather radios. For example, the Midland WR-300, a well-regarded tabletop emergency radio can store codes for up to 23 counties. While it has seven weather channels that can be scanned, selectable alerts (voice, display, and tone) and an alarm clock function, the lack of any AM/FM radio reception is a disappointment for some users.
Many also comment the beeping sound that accompanies button presses can be obnoxious, though that's easily turned off. The included charging cradle/stand means that the Midland HH54VP2 can also serve as a desktop emergency radio.
Simple and effective. Without lots of bells and whistles to muddy up its solid and compact design, the Midland HH54VP2 is simple to operate. Owners also appreciate that the weather radio is easy to program.
Don't venture too far from home. Despite its portable design, the HH54VP2's weak battery life makes it unreliable for extended long-term use away from the charger. Still, if you want an emergency radio for both leaving on the desktop and carrying around with you, the Midland HH54VP2 is one of the few that can serve both roles.

2. WeatherRadioGuide.com
On his site WeatherRadioGuide.com, geologist and amateur weather enthusiast Graham McClung offers a review of the Midland HH54VP2 that focuses more on features than on critique. He does note, however, that this "well designed" portable radio eats up lots of power when it is away from its charging cradle, so AA batteries get used up pretty quickly. It's not clear what, if any, hands-on testing is conducted here.
