If you're willing to learn some HTML and sacrifice some convenience, reviews recommend the Evrsoft First Page HTML editor as more convenient than most free website software. It lets you see the results of your code as you edit it, and includes spell checking and a quick browser preview. Lots of scripts are included too. The main weak points are in setting up layouts and using PHP. If you want something easier to use, reviewers recommend CoffeeCup Visual Site Designer (*est. $50) for Windows users and Realmac RapidWeaver 4.1.3 (*est. $80) for Mac users.
We found the best review of Evrsoft First Page 2006 at MerificamPress.com, where Matthew Griffin compares it with four other free web design programs, noting both its advantages and drawbacks. Download.com provides the most user-written ratings, some with comments, while ratings at Softpedia don't include comments. An older review at WDVL.com covers a much earlier version of First Page, but the screen shots make it easier to visualize how it works. A brief user-review at ReviewCentre.com is well balanced and helpful.
