At the time of its release, reviewers agreed that the Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX was an above-average webcam in its price range, but it has since been outpaced by the competition. Reviewers don't all agree about image quality, but most see this as one of the better budget webcams. Features are basic; there's an integrated microphone, but the webcam can't zoom or pan. The Communicate STX has VGA resolution that's better than the typical 352 pixels by 288 pixels you'll find with the least expensive webcams. The QuickCam Communicate STX also does well in low light. Currently, the Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000 (Discontinued) is the best reviewed budget webcam.

Frank Harrell, at CowboyFrank.net, is arguably the best overall source of webcam reviews on the web. Web User offers a head-to-head review of six webcams, but its page on the Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX has some errors. Consumer Guide rates the QuickCam Communicate STX and describes the camera's features, but doesn't touch upon sound or image quality. Amazon.com users present mixed experiences, although the majority are positive.
