Although the majority of new webcam models are designated universal video class (UVC), meaning they will deliver basic video and audio support for the Mac operating system (versions 10.4.9 and newer), advanced features are often disabled and compatibility issues are legion. Enter the Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac, a webcam that officially supports the Mac operating system and is well liked by reviewers. It's very similar to Logitech's Webcam Pro 9000, with the main distinction being the QuickCam Vision Pro's autofocus feature, which is hardware-based and does not rely on drivers or software, thereby reducing the likelihood of compatibility issues. Otherwise, the QuickCam Vision Pro features the same Carl Zeiss lens, 2-megapixel sensor, integrated microphone and RightLight technology (which optimizes image quality in poor lighting conditions) as the Webcam Pro 9000. Although some user reviews report inconsistent support for various Mac applications and problems with Apple's Snow Leopard operating system, the camera earns 4 out of 5 stars on average in more than 160 Amazon.com reviews, and most are pleased with its image quality. Logitech backs the Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac with a two-year limited warranty.
MacLife.com gives the QuickCam Vision Pro an Editors' Choice award, calling it a worthy replacement for the well-liked iSight webcam. British consumer magazine Which? rates the older Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks, the predecessor to the QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac. Our top webcam reviewer, Frank Harrell at CowboyFrank.net, mentions the QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac (in his review of the QuickCam Pro 9000) but does not review it. Users on Amazon.com and Logitech's own website rate the camera favorably, giving it the edge over now-discontinued Apple iSight for its high-quality optics and easy plug-and-play installation.

One should be skeptical of reviews of Logitech's products hosted on the company's own site, but there's a healthy, balanced mix of positive and negative in the ratings, many of which bear recent dates. Compared by many reviewers with the considerably more expensive Apple iSight (now discontinued), the QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac does well, earning 4 stars out of 5 and impressing users with its high-quality optics and easy plug-and-play installation.
