Of the three best-known webmail providers, Gmail gets top ranking. However, GMX.com gets a high rating on all counts, and the reviewer says the drawbacks (not as much storage space as Gmail) don't detract from the product offerings.

2011 Free Email Services Review Comparisons
by Editors of TopTenReviews.com
Our AssessmentEditors review 10 free online email services on this comparison website. The most popular email sites get top ranking here (Gmail, Windows Live and Yahoo!, in that order) but several less well-known services also get ratings and full reviews. The comparison chart lists a lot of relevant features, making it easier to pick a free webmail service that provides the exact services you care about most. It's a bit confusing that the service that's ranked fifth actually gets better ratings than the services that are ranked second, third and fourth on the list. We'd give this review a stronger rating if it were not for this concern.
Yahoo! Mail
by Contributors to Epinions.com
Our AssessmentIn about 500 consumer reviews, contributors to Epinions.com praise Yahoo! Mail. Website contributors say the service is speedy, reliable and blocks most spam. Many users state that they have never experienced outages with this provider. Consumer reviews have to be taken with a grain of salt, since they may reflect a misunderstanding or a singular experience, but Epinions.com is widely recognized and used by many people. Gmail had only a handful of reviews on Epinions.com by comparison (less than 50) and Hotmail had more than 500 reviews, but they were somewhat less favorable than Yahoo! Mail.
