Bottom line

A stylish and lightweight alternative to some heavier Bluetooth headphones, the saucy red MEElectronics Air-Fi AF32 is appealing for more than its looks and bargain price. Critics and users say it delivers good sound performance for both music and calling, although that's subject to the limitations of Bluetooth technology. Battery life is stellar and a cord for wired operation is included. An on-ear design that's prone to slipping off your head with heavy exertion makes the Air-Fi AF32 a poor gym companion, but reports say it's otherwise comfortable to wear.

Performance

Good sound, great battery life. CNET's David Carnoy says the AF32s "are by no means an audiophile-grade set, but I thought they sounded better than a lot of in-ear Bluetooth headphones I've tested." Others agree: "Listening to a variety of music types we could pick out treble, bass and middle with clarity," says Matt Egan at PC Advisor. "Occasionally the sound was a bit muddy around the edges, but for the price the MEElectronics Air-Fi AF32 produce a very solid sound."

Most shortfalls in sound quality can be blamed on Bluetooth technology. Carnoy likes that the headphone can be used corded and the needed cord is included; this "is a nice bonus because you really get a sense of the difference between listening to music over Bluetooth and over a wired connection." Phone call sound quality also draws kudos, and battery life can be as long as 12 hours on a single charge.

Comfort

A little slippery for some. Reviewers give the MEElectronics Air-Fi AF32 high scores for overall comfort, despite the fact that the on-ear design can make your ears sweat in hot weather or during longer listening sessions. Some users say the headphone may slip off easily during exercise, so look elsewhere for Bluetooth headphones for the gym.

Value

Lots of bang for the buck. Experts and owners are generally pleased with the way the MEElectronics Air-Fi AF32 performs, especially considering its less-than-premium price. Several reviewers compare the AF32 very favorably to Bluetooth headphones that cost considerably more.

Carnoy says the MEElectronics Air-Fi AF32 isn't quite an audiophile-grade Bluetooth headset, but it does hold up well against similarly priced wired models. Although Bluetooth sound compression is still present, performance is strong and you get great battery life.

2. PC Advisor

Britain's PC Advisor gives the MEElectronics Air-Fi AF32 a mostly thumbs-up evaluation. Egan says you might not expect top-quality sound considering what these Bluetooth headphones sell for, and in that case "you may be pleasantly surprised." He finds the AF32 "a pleasure to wear for a long time," despite an on-ear design that leaves his ears on the warm side, especially in a hot room or after running at the gym.
