Some Pain - But Some Gain, November 21, 2009

My daughter wanted one of these and then after she had hers a week and liked it, I decided to get one of my own. Using this for the first time hurts, there is no getting around it. When you have a leg full of hair, there is a lot to pull out. Just do what you can each day until you become accustomed to it. Then once you have all the hair removed on your legs, you will find that a touch up every few days is probably enough. Since hair growth is constant and at differing rates, this will never produce a perfectly smooth result. The hairs need to grow to a certain length for the tweezers to grab them. If you desire ulta-smooth legs for a special occasion, then you can epilate that day and then afterwards, shave. For me, I like this product, since I hate messing around with the shaving process every day. There is less stubble using the epilator. I researched epilators and decided the Braun was the best. I now also epilate my underarms, being very careful and holding them taut. Keep the epilator away from any loose clothing, threads, long hair or your socks. I always shower first using anti-bacterial soap, you can also use a natural loofah and gently exfoliate so you don't get ingrowns. Afterwards you can use aloe or lotion. Overall, this is much handier than shaving. While it's not perfect, I still use it and will replace it if need be.

Not for coarse hair!, November 19, 2009

Okay, so I saw all the wonderful reviews and thought I found a cheaper way to "wax." Boy was my head high up in the clouds. I guess one thing I should have looked for in the reviews was the thickness of the person's hair. My legs rival a brillo pad. I have my legs waxed but the hair still grows out pretty coarse and thick. Guess I should thank my parents' genes for that one. Anyway, right off the bat I realized I made a mistake purchasing the silk-epil. Not only did it hurt like "insert word", it barely took any hair with it. You have to hold it at a complete 90 degree angle and pray with every stroke for it to nab just a few hairs. The rest of your skin is left looking like you took up giving yourself lashes. Mind you, I wasn't pressing into the skin at all - following the instructions to the letter. I, in my brilliant state of mind, decided that "gee, I must be missing something here" and tried my other leg. Heaven help me! I am so sorry for all the wrong I have ever done. Please make the pain stop! My legs are now burning, red and ready to walk away from me on their own. I have a very high tolerance for pain but this broke all barriers. Moral of my experience: If you have coarser hair, you might want to think twice about purchasing this particular epilator. If you have baby fine hair that won't feel like fish hooks being ripped from your skin, then you might consider this for purchase.

I like it !!!, November 18, 2009
I bought this epilator after reading the reviews. Never had one before and I like it. It is paifull first 2-3 times and after that's fine.

My wife wanted this product and she really likes it. She knew of this epilator from her sister and decided to get one. So I ordered it, and she's loved using it ever since she got it in the mail Thanks Braun and thanks Amazon.com.
Wish I knew about this years ago, November 15, 2009

Ordered this about 6 weeks ago and I could not be happier. I read many reviews and decided to give it a try seeing as I could not afford laser at the present time, and I have been more than satisfied. This is the lowest price I have found for this model and if/when my epilator quits I will buy this one again. I was concered about the pain factor, but have found it to be no more painful than waxing, I will say the lower leg has been the least painful in my experience. Underarms is a breeze, not as bad as the reviews I have read. I think the thicker and deeper rooted the hair the more discomfort is experienced. All in all, worth the $$.

1. Choice magazine

The Braun Silk-epil Xelle was one of three top picks in tests performed by this Australian review publication. Editors say the Silk-epil works well and is easy to use.

2. Which? magazine

Which? magazine's epilator expert gives the Braun Silk-epil Xpressive 7781 (a slightly fancier model than the Silk-epil Xelle 5270) a wet and a dry test on her legs and underarms. She notes the greater comfort of using it on wet skin that has been lathered with shower gel rather than dry skin, but she still had more underarm irritation the next day than she normally would see after using a razor or wax. She also says the light worked better on wet skin than dry, and she says the biggest drawback is the amount of time it took to get good results.

3. Amazon.com

The Braun Silk-epil Xelle is by far the most popular, highest-rated epilator on this site. It receives more than 700 reviews, and more than 450 of them gave it the highest possible rating. Users say it works great and is a cheaper alternative to waxing. However, many say it's painful to use and warn against epilating in sensitive areas, such as bikini or underarms. Amazon.com also has a helpful customer discussion forum where common questions about using the Braun Silk-epil and epilators in general are answered by other users.

4. Target.com

More than 30 reviewers rave about this epilator. Most say any pain decreases over time and is worth it because skin stays smoother longer. Several users note that an epilator is a great investment versus continuous salon visits for waxing.

5. Folica.com

This reputable cosmetic and beauty product website has more than 30 reviews of the 5270 Silk-epil Xelle and almost all of the comments are glowing. Several users say they get ingrown hairs; one user specifically says epilating is not a good hair removal method for those with medium to coarse curly hair because of the ingrown hair problem. We also find the usual pain complaints but nothing that stops most users from rating the epilator very highly.

6. YouTube.com

This lone video review is helpful for seeing the features and hearing how noisy the Braun epilator is, although the reviewer does not show the Silk-epil Xelle actually removing hair. She recommends taking an over-the-counter pain relief medication before epilating to lessen the pain involved, especially for those new to this method of hair removal.
