Tests show epilators do a better -- and longer-lasting -- job of removing hair, but rather than shaving hair, electric epilators pull hairs out, so there is some associated pain. Though not pain-free, the best testing of epilators finds that the Philips Satinelle HP is the most comfortable to use. It also performs as well as the pricier Braun Silk-epil Xelle (*Est. $75) in one formal test, and users rate it as highly as the more expensive Satinelle Ice (*Est. $55). The Satinelle HP has two speeds and comes with a shaving head, an exfoliating loofah pad, a cleaning brush and a case.

Two professional tests and user reviews are helpful in our research of the Philips Satinelle. We find the most reviews at Amazon.com and a few more at Epinions.com. ConsumerReports.org and Australia's Choice magazine include the Satinelle in their comparison reviews. However, ConsumerReports.org reviews the similar Satinelle Ice, which dispenses a cooling fluid as it works.

Our Sources

1. Choice magazine

This is the best article we found on hair removal, with more than 100 women participating in tests of epilators and other options. The Philips Satinelle ties for top pick with two other epilators. Editors give it high marks for effectiveness and ease of use.

2. ConsumerReports.org

Professional testers include the Satinelle Ice electric shaver in this report on hair removal. The Satinelle Ice is similar to the regular Satinelle, and this evaluation has some value.

3. Amazon.com

In user reviews of epilators, the Braun Silk-epil Xelle rates slightly higher than the Philips Satinelle HP, but it costs more. The Satinelle has about 20 mostly positive reviews. Some say it seems to break hair more than pluck it, but others say it leaves skin smooth.

4. Epinions.com

The couple of reviews here praise the Satinelle as a cheaper, easier alternative to leg waxing. A couple users say the Satinelle is painful to use, however.
