Gravity is a non-discriminatory force and it eventually catches up to everyone -- be it man or woman -- in the form of fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. While there is a much larger market for women's anti-aging products than there is for men's, there really is no difference in the skin care needs of men and women. Aside from a feminine scent in some products, there is no reason that men can't use any type of facial moisturizer, (which we cover in a separate report) on the market.
Our two Best Reviewed wrinkle creams -- Olay Regenerist Daily Regenerating Serum (Est. $15 for 1.7 oz.) and Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream (Est. $10 for 1.4 oz.) -- are perfectly suitable options for both men and women. Furthermore, both products are free of any fragrance -- making them truly gender-neutral.
But men are not limited to either women's cream or gender-neutral creams. The men's skin care market is growing all the time and we found a good choice in the Lab Series line of skin care products for men. While there are not nearly as many reviews for these products -- or any men's skin-care product -- the ones we found were the best all around.
As for wrinkle creams, Lab Series Max LS Overnight Renewal Serum (Est. $50 for 1 oz.) gets great reviews from both experts and users who say they can see the difference in their skin, both immediately and over the long term. It doesn't contain retinol, but it's loaded with lots of antioxidants and other good-for-skin ingredients that make for smoother and softer skin. Skin-care expert Paula Begoun gives it her highest 5-star rating -- one of a very few skin care products for men to earn that designation. She says it has a lightweight, non-greasy texture that will give you smoother skin.
In a test of Lab Series Max LS Overnight for GQ, Grady Laird says he saw an immediate difference, that his skin was soothed and hydrated after the first use. He continued to see improvement after three weeks. Overall, he said he felt he looked younger.
Users like it as well, and they also say they notice a difference the first time they use the serum. It's expensive, some note, especially when you compare it to gender-neutral creams with the same ingredients, but men who like the idea of a male-specific product, and want a full product line, are big fans of Lab Series.
We didn't see it in any expert roundups, but Neutrogena Men Age Fighter Face Moisturizer (Est. $13 for 1.4 oz.) is a retinol-containing anti-aging product for men that's well-reviewed by users. Neutrogena bills it as a daytime moisturizer because it has an SPF rating of 15, but retinol products are better suited for use at night because retinol can break down when exposed to sunlight. Overall, this lotion has the right ingredients to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and restore skin damage. It's also very affordable, making it worth a try if you want a product aimed at men but don't want to shell out the premium that men's products often add on. Hundreds of users absolutely love it, saying it minimizes their wrinkles and seems to prevent them as well. They also say it smoothens, softens and gives their skin a more even tone. One theme that we saw over and over was from men who had lingering acne scars and say Neutrogena Men Age Fighter Moisturizer seems to minimize and lighten them.
Lab Series gets the best reviews from experts, including some with solid scientific credentials in the skin care field, and men who use it say it really works. But if it's a bit over your budget, you have nothing to lose if you start with Neutrogena.
