Editors' Most Wanted Vehicles for 2007
Editors of Edmunds.com
As of July 2007
This listing, compiled annually by the editors of Edmunds.com, lists the cars they'd most like to own. Although the criteria for making the list is clearly explained, the site also confesses that personal opinions sometimes "overruled common sense" in selecting cars. The listing includes a brief explanation of what makes a selected car special, and links take you to where you can find longer reviews. Top-rated coupes include the Honda Civic, MINI Cooper and Infiniti G35. The listing includes a few vehicles that most would consider sports cars (oddly enough, there's no separate sports car category).

Consumer Guide's Best Bets and Recommendations for 2007
Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
As of July 2007
While Consumer Guide often falls short when reviewing other types of products, they really shine when it comes to covering cars. At least four test drivers evaluate every rated model, and special consideration is given to how each performs in real-world situations such as shopping or commuting, and on both long and short trips. Cars get objective ratings in ten areas, and those ratings are compared to the average rating of similar models. We'd like to see a little more discussion, but there's enough here to get a good grip on what the editors like -- and dislike -- about each car they review. Best Buy coupe selections include the Hyundai Accent, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, BMW 3 Series and Scion tC.

Consumer Reports

Reliability of New Vehicles by Category
Editors of Consumer Reports
Not Dated
Consumer Reports does in-depth testing of new vehicles as they come to market. Unfortunately, the reviews themselves don't match that depth, as discussion falls short of what's seen from some other reviewers. However, the magazine's information on long-term reliability, which is drawn from annual subscriber surveys, is unmatched. There's also good information on safety and practicality, details that are sometimes glossed over by others. As long as you understand Consumer Reports' apparent bias toward reliability and value over performance and "sex appeal," the information they provide and recommendations they make are valuable.

Car and Driver
2007 10 Best Cars
Csaba Csere and Tony Swan
Jan. 2007
Every year, Car and Driver's editors evaluate and reevaluate cars to name the ten they consider to be the very best overall. New cars or those considerably updated are tested, and past winners reevaluated to make sure that they haven't been left behind by their competitors. To qualify, cars are judged on how they perform their intended purpose, whether or not they are "engaging" and, finally, value. In addition to a bevy of sports cars, the Honda Accord coupe earns recognition. That's not surprising, since Car and Driver notes that the Accord has made the list 21 out of the last 25 years.

Motor Trend
Coupe Reviews
Editors of Motor Trend
As of July 2007
Motor Trend reviews coupes in detailed single-car reviews and multi-car competitions. A nice touch is that initial impressions are often updated over the course of a year or more, so potential buyers get a more complete look at how well the car performs over an extended period of time. Like Car & Driver, the emphasis here seems to be more on high-performance and luxury choices, but there's plenty of information on a variety of coupes to fit most budgets. Unfortunately, though Motor Trend identifies winners and losers when it conducts multi-car comparisons and is not bashful about identifying strengths and weaknesses in the cars it reviews, there is no overall ranking of coupes.

Coupe Reviews and Road Tests
Editors of Car and Driver
As of July 2007
In addition to the article above, Car and Driver reviews coupes in lots of single-vehicle reports and head-to-head comparisons. One caveat is that many of the reviews of coupes focus only on high-performance choices. Also, while the comparison articles pull no punches about which car is best, and the individual car reports offer opinions -- sometimes pointed ones -- there is no overall ranking to make it easier to see which coupe is rated best overall.

2007 Editors' Choice Awards
Editors of AutoSite.com
As of July 2007
AutoSite.com, which is owned by the Autobytel.com car buying service, delivers a list of what they believe to be the best cars for the current model year, placing each vehicle into a category such as Best New Midsize Car and Most Stylish New Car for 2007. We appreciate that the selection criteria for making this list is clearly spelled out, including a requirement that at least one staff member had to have driven a given car for it to even qualify. Writeups about the individual cars here are brief, but links take you to longer reviews elsewhere on the site. Among coupes, the BMW 335i 3 Series coupe captures the site's Car of the Year rating, while the Honda Civic is named Best Non-Hybrid for the Environment and Best Car for Teen Drivers.

Coupe Reviews
Editors of WhatCar.com
As of July 2007
WhatCar?, a British magazine and website, names its top five coupe selections here. Although most of the choices are better classified as sports cars, the Audi TT and BMW 3 Series top the list. The reviews themselves are rather terse by car enthusiast magazine standards, but ratings of from 1 to 5 stars are given in categories covering performance on the road, the ownership experience and cabin appointments and ergonomics, and an overall rating is awarded.

Recommended Shopping Lists
Editors of KBB.com
As of July 2007
KBB.com is the online home of Kelley Blue Book, long regarded as the top resource in determining the value of both new and used vehicles. However, the website also delivers a wealth of automotive research and opinion for consumers -- including lists of cars that the editors recommend. Although there's no list of recommended coupes, you'll find two-door and three-door (hatchback) models on the lists of recommended compact cars and hatchbacks. Those include the MINI Cooper, Pontiac G5, Scion tC and Toyota Yaris.

In addition to the reviews above, Edmunds.com also publishes InsideLine.com, which is an online car enthusiast magazine with numerous single-car reviews and head-to-head comparisons, but no overall rankings of cars. There's a great comparative preview here for the 2008 Infiniti G37 coupe (compared to the 2007 BMW 335i coupe).

Hottest Cars for 2007: Coupes
Bengt Halvorson
Sept. 2006
Attempting to help their readers make the most intelligent financial decisions possible, ForbesAutos.com publishes a list of what they believe to be the best coupes for the current model year. The Audi TT, BMW 335i, Infiniti G35, Mercedes-Benz CL-Class and Volvo C30 (2008) all get nods. Forbes nicely identifies what makes each car stand out among its peers and provides links to longer individual vehicle reviews. We'd rate this review higher if Forbes explained the criteria used to make their selections.

Editors' top affordable tech cars
Editors of CNet.com
As of July 2007
CNet.com reviews cars from a technology point of view. That's both good and bad. On the upside, editors do an excellent job of covering automotive technology both under the hood and in the cabin. The downside is that performance and other details that car enthusiasts want to read sometimes get glossed over. Also, technology goes a long way toward influencing the overall ratings. Among coupes, the 2007 MINI Cooper S and the 2006 Honda Civic Si (essentially identical to the 2007 model) get recommendations.

Luxury Performance Coupes: Audi TT vs. BMW Z4 vs. Mercedes SLK vs. Porsche Cayman
Glenn Butler
Feb. 2007
Australia's Drive.com website puts these luxury performance coupes through their paces to determine which is the best for everyday use. However, this is a rather odd competition, as the cars really fill different slots ranging from luxury coupes to true sports cars. That's a point that Drive itself somewhat concedes by noting that the Mercedes-Benz SLK280 is not built for the same level of performance as the other cars in this face-off. The author adds that the Porsche Cayman is a sports car that demands too many compromises to be a good everyday car. In the end, the Audi TT gets the nod as a good compromise between performance and practicality.

Kiplinger's 2007 Auto Buyer's Guide
Editors of Kiplinger
Nov. 2006
Kiplinger's annual buyers' guide is a good place to learn about the financial aspects of a coupe you might be considering. Unfortunately, discussion about the individual cars themselves is nearly nonexistent. We also could find no evidence that these cars have been driven or otherwise tested, nor determine what criteria are used to create the recommendations. There is no coupe classification, but lots of coupes -- including the Volkswagen Rabbit, Toyota Yaris, MINI Cooper S and Honda Civic Si – are scattered among the other categories.

Best Overall Values of the Year
Editors of IntelliChoice.com
Not Dated
Every year, IntelliChoice reports on the vehicles it feels offers the best value in their class. No testing is done; instead, "data-driven automotive analysis" is used to calculate which vehicles will cost significantly less to own than expected. Coupes -- or cars available as coupes -- include the 2007 Infiniti G35, Honda Civic and Toyota Yaris. Discussion is brief and does not provide much insight beyond manufacturer-supplied information.

Top Gear Awards 2006
Editors of TopGear.com
Dec. 2006
British magazine Top Gear chooses what they believe to be the best vehicles in a number of categories. Unfortunately, the site is high on glitz and short on usability, making finding those selections a chore. In addition, the selection criteria, if stated, are impossible to find. Finally, writeups are brief, but are accompanied by a video. Top ratings go to the Audi TT coupe, which wins the Coupe of the Year award, and the MINI Cooper S, which captures Small Car of the Year honors.

6 Sleeper Cars for 2007
Thomas Bey
Not Dated
AskMen.com is a lifestyle-based website for the average guy, and of course this means that part of their coverage includes automobiles. This particular piece focuses on "sleeper cars," those vehicles which find it better to hide their performance-oriented agendas behind conservative facades. Only one coupe makes this list: the Honda Accord EX-L. The Accord is applauded for its smoothness and confidence. While it is noted that the Honda isn't going to compete with some of the more performance-oriented vehicles, it will deliver what drivers need in a very subdued package.
