(*est. $14,560 to $29,185)

This page is part of a larger ConsumerSearch report on Economy Cars which includes more reviews, analysis and a summary of the top-rated models.

What reviews like:
The primary appeal of the Chrysler PT Cruiser has always been the look of the vehicle, and that is still the case. Each and every review had positive comments about the unique styling of the PT Cruiser. Interior space, including an expansive rear seat, is also a highlight, along with a flexible cargo area. Handling is also complimented in reviews, and the Chrysler PT Cruiser has been above-average in long-term reliability.

What reviews don't like:

While the turbo version of the 2007 PT Cruiser scores points for pickup, the non-turbo engines are criticized in reviews for sub-par torque and power. Testers also notice some body lean in reviews. Overall, the PT Cruiser isn't a huge standout in any particular area, but its looks set it apart.

EPA fuel economy estimate: 19 to 22 mpg/city, 26 to 29 mpg/highway, depending on engine

2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser review highlights

Retro styling and a spacious interior are the main touchstones for the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser. In reviews, experts say the rear seat is especially roomy, and it can fold flat for more flexible cargo options. While most reviews like the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser, it doesn't stand out as best in any particular area. Handling and steering are good, and the ride is smooth. While acceleration in the turbo model is a high point, the non-turbo engines are criticized. Overall, the PT Cruiser is worth a test drive if you like the boxy look and want a lot of cargo flexibility. Reliability has been good. Other options in this class include the Honda Fit hatchback (*est. $13,850 to $15,170).

*In order of credibility (see our Ratings Criteria).

1. Edmunds.com
2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser review
Editors of Edmunds.com

Editors at Edmunds.com aren't the PT Cruiser's biggest fans. Acceleration is said to be unimpressive, the body roll is apparent, and the seats are not overly comfortable. However, the 2007 PT Cruiser does have a nice look. In addition, it offers a lot of storage space, and the price is fair.

2. Consumer Guide.com
2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser review
Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
Nov. 2006

The 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser isn't a particular favorite of editors at ConsumerGuide.com. It gets points for acceleration in the turbo models, but loses points for acceleration in non-turbo models. Cargo space is a high point, but overall, Consumer Guide says your money is better spent on the Honda Civic or Mazda3.

3. Cars.com
2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser review
Editors of Cars.com
Sept. 2006

Editors at Cars.com say that the Chrysler PT Cruiser is "more satisfying than some critics suggest." The spacious interior, styling and "confident and nimble" handling all get good marks, with the only real flaw, according to the review, being some body lean.

Although you must be a subscriber to read the car reviews at Consumer Reports, each review has a good amount of no-nonsense detail. Editors road-test the Chrysler PT Cruiser, along with pretty much every other car. Ratings are assigned in several categories, and the PT Cruiser also gets a score for predicted reliability -- something not often covered in other reviews.

5. CarCritic.com
Chrysler PT Cruiser review
Don Vorderman

Overall, CarCritic.com says the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser is "as appealing as ever" with peppy engine choices and a design that doesn't need much improvement. CarCritic is an interesting review source. Editors offer a bottom-line assessment rather than a long and detailed narrative review. The Chrysler PT Cruiser isn't compared to other compact cars, however. Reading this review online will cost you $1.

Road Test: 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible GT
Iain Shankland
Nov. 2006

This casual review of the 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser is almost entirely positive. Although not very critical, the review is fun to read. The only criticism is that opening the trunk may let in snow or rain.
