2007 Ford Freestar Review

(*est. $19,700 to $29,575)

This page is part of a larger ConsumerSearch report on Minivans which includes more reviews, analysis and a summary of the top-rated models.

What the reviewers like:
Reviewers said that the 2007 Ford Freestar has good cargo space and excellent forward visibility. Most crash-test scores were good (as long as the Freestar was optioned with side airbags).

What the reviewers don't like:
Most reviewers agreed that the Ford Freestar does not measure up to the competition in essentially any regard. As noted, Ford is discontinuing its minivans entirely starting in 2008. Other budget minivans, like the 2007 models of the Kia Sedona and Hyundai Entourage, got better reviews.

2007 Ford Freestar review highlights

In general, reviews agreed that the Ford Freestar minivan doesn't offer an advantage over the class-leading 2007 Honda Odyssey (price when new: $25,645 to $39,095) and Toyota Sienna (price when new: $24,155 to $37,665) minivans. Furthermore, reviewers concluded that the Ford Freestar doesn't stand up well to the less expensive competition either, including the highly rated Kia Sedona (price when new: $20,495 to $26,195). Model year 2007 was the final year for the Ford Freestar minivan; Ford plans to focus on the burgeoning crossover vehicle market instead.

The 2007 Ford Freestar minivan wasn’t substantially updated after the 2004 model year, so many of the older reviews published in this minivan’s short lifespan still have some value. The most comparative review we found for the Ford Freestar is a June 2004 roundup at Car and Driver magazine. While the Freestar never saw a significant redesign between 2004 and its retirement in 2007, competitive minivans were significantly updated, so this review has limited value. Edmunds.com published a detailed review of the 2007 Ford Freestar, comparing this minivan in depth to the competition. Consumer Reports magazine and Automotive.com also covered the Ford Freestar minivan.

2007 Ford Freestar Review
Editors of Edmunds.com

Edmunds.com didn't test the Ford Freestar head-to-head with other minivans, but editors did compare it to the competition in a casual way. Editors said the Ford Freestar minivan scores well for safety, but that any of its competitors would be a better choice.

June 2004

This is an excellent head-to-head comparison of five minivans based on hands-on testing. While the Ford Freestar wasn’t substantially updated between 2004 and its retirement, some of the competing minivans have been significantly redesigned in that time period, so this comparison loses value.

2007 Ford Freestar Review
Editors of Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports hasn't road-tested the Ford Freestar minivan since its 2004 introduction, but since the minivan was never substantially redesigned before it was discontinued, this review is still applicable to the 2007 Freestar. What's most valuable here is a chart showing long-term reliability and repair data based on Consumer Reports' annual reader survey.

4. Automotive.com
2006 Ford Freestar Review
Mitch McCullough and Michelle Krebs

This review actually covered the 2006 Ford Freestar, but since this minivan didn’t see many revisions during its brief stint on the market, the opinions expressed here still apply to the 2007 model. Editors focused more on features than testing, and the comparison to other minivans was merely cursory.

5. Consumer Guide.com
2004-2007 Ford Freestar Reviews
Editors of ConsumerGuide.com

ConsumerGuide.com is most valuable as a place to find detailed specification, engine and features information. It's also a great source for finding reviews on used cars, including a large section on trouble spot and recalls for prior model years.

2007 Ford Freestar Review
Don Vorderman

Rather than going into detail about performance and features, CarCritic.com's Don Vorderman focuses mainly on owner surveys and some hands-on testing to come up with a quick assessment of the Ford Freestar minivan. While most other reviews say the 2007 Freestar was surpassed by the competition, Vorderman said it's still a nice choice.
