1.  Edmunds.com Comparison Test: 2007 Half-Ton Pickup Trucks

Jason Kavanagh

Jan. 22, 2007
reviews rating Editors test three half-ton trucks during a two-week period for this comparison test, which evaluates each truck on overall utility, powertrain, ride quality and fuel economy, among other factors. Trucks are tested both on-road and off. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD Crew Cab has the best on-road manners and ride, but it's also good on gravel. But it was the slowest of the three, with a "soft" throttle response. The top-rated Toyota Tundra double cab has the most powerful engine and, interestingly, gets the best gas mileage (about 14.4 mpg). It has an outstanding cabin and it's great off-road, with precise steering and the tightest turning circle. The Nissan Titan 4x4 SE finishes third. Editors say the performance differences between all three trucks are small, and that this was one of the closest comparison tests ever performed.
2.  Motor Trend First Drive: 2007 Toyota Tundra

Todd Lassa

Jan. 7, 2007
reviews rating This early look at the 2007 Toyota Tundra is actually more detailed than the title would suggest. Editors do a good job of analyzing the Tundra in the company of its peers, even without direct head-to-head testing. Editors say the Tundra has a great big engine, but it doesn't handle any better than other large trucks. The cabin is roomy, with good storage options, but editors say the interior is a little "cheesy" compared to others. Overall, editors say the new Toyota Tundra isn't a serious threat to the competition, including the new Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram.
3.  Cars.com Cars.comparison: Full-Size Trucks

Joe Hanley, Mike Wiesenfelder and David Thomas

Not Dated
reviews rating Cars.com compares the Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota Tundra and Ford F-150 in a laundry list of categories, including "ranch cred," ride comfort and power. The 2007 Toyota Tundra wins by a landslide, though each truck did win at least one category. The Silverado has the smoothest ride and most comfortable interior. The Ford F-150 has "ranch cred," with a fiercely loyal fan base. But neither truck outdoes the Toyota Tundra, which has the best safety features, rear-seat flexibility and power. It ties with the Silverado on ride quality and interior comfort.
4.  Truckin' 2007 Truck & SUV of the Year

Mark Halvorsen

Not Dated
reviews rating Truckin', a widely read truck magazine, makes its own best-of picks. This year's test included seven pickups, but notably did not include -- or even mention -- the Toyota Tundra. The Chevy Avalanche sport-utility pickup is the best of this breed, though the price is high. The Chevy Silverado is judged best of the year, with good handling, especially on the highway, and the Chevy is a better value than some of its competitors. It also got the best gas mileage (about 15 mpg). This report would rank more highly if it had included the Tundra. The Ford F-150 is called "tired."
5.  Edmunds.com Editors' Most Wanted for 2007

Editors of Edmunds.com

Not Dated
reviews rating Edmunds.com publishes detailed test reports of almost every car and truck on the market. Each year, staffers choose favorites for this Most Wanted list in several price ranges. Two trucks make the list in 2007, both from Toyota: the Toyota Tacoma in the compact truck category and the Toyota Tundra in the large truck category. It is admitted that the Tacoma is not overly refined, yet it performs well in every other category. The Tundra does everything well, even though some are not impressed with its exterior styling.
6.  Car and Driver 2007 5 Best Trucks

Csaba Csere

Mar. 2007
reviews rating Car and Driver selects a best pickup truck every model year. Although the magazine's picks are based on road tests, the flaw is that editors don't consider all current trucks -- only new or redesigned trucks are considered for the 'best of' title. For 2007, just six trucks were considered. However, the nominees do include the hottest competitors -- the Ford F-150, Toyota Tundra and Chevy Silverado. The Chevrolet Silverado wins; editors say it's not a radical departure as far as innovation -- rather, it offers superb handling and braking, an impressively rigid structure and a smooth ride. But editors don’t say why the competition falls short.

7.  Motor Trend 2007 Motor Trend Truck of the Year: Chevrolet Silverado

Frank Markus

Jan. 2007
reviews rating Motor Trend annually chooses a car and truck of the year, and the designation has become one of the most distinguished titles in the automotive world. However, one fault is that Motor Trend doesn't consider the entire current lineup of pickups for this honor. Rather, it only looks at a very small sampling, which this year included the Cadillac Escalade EXT, the Chevy Avalanche Z71, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac, the GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado. The new Silverado takes the prize. Editors say it excels in terms of fuel efficiency, exterior looks and pricing.
8.  Consumer Guide.com Compact and Large Pickup Reviews

Editors of Consumer Guide

Not Dated
reviews rating Consumer Guide tests most cars on the market. Top-rated trucks get a 'recommended' or 'best buy' designation. Only one 2007 pickup gets a best-buy rating: the 2007 Toyota Tacoma. Handling and acceleration are high points. Several other trucks, including the 2007 Dodge Dakota, Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevy Silverado 1500 Classic, Ford F-150 and GMC Sierra 1500 Classic recommended. Consumer Guide is a great place to find options and trim-level information, along with pricing.

9.  Consumer Reports Pickup Reviews

Editors of Consumer Reports

Not Dated
reviews rating Consumer Reports tests pretty much every new vehicle on the market -- eventually. At the time of our visit in late February, editors had not yet tested the most significant new trucks, the redesigned 2007 Chevrolet Silverado and 2007 Toyota Tundra. Consumer Reports heavily weights longtime reliability and resale value as deciding factors -- aspects often neglected in other reviews.
10.  Popular Mechanics PM Automotive Excellence Awards 2007

Editors of Popular Mechanics

Oct. 2006
reviews rating The GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado receive a PM Automotive Excellence award for 2007. However, the criteria used for this award aren't clear, and we're not sure which other trucks were nominated. The review refers to the Silverado/Sierra as "real pickups."
11.  KBB.com Recommended Shopping Lists: Pickups

Staff of KBB.com

Not Dated
reviews rating KBB.com, the online home of Kelley Blue Book, chooses five best-bet pickups in both small and large categories. All of the usual competitors are here, but editors don't compare the trucks or try to rank them in any way.
12.  ForbesAutos.com Truck Reviews

Jim Gorzelany

Not Dated
reviews rating Forbes Autos has only reviewed three 2007 pickups: the Cadillac Escalade EXT, the Lincoln Mark LT and the Honda Ridgeline. The reviews themselves are well written, with a nice summary section. The Honda Ridgeline is reliable, and said to be best for those who want a truck with a more car-like ride and don't need a heavy-duty hauler. The Lincoln is for those who need to haul boats or trailers and need off-road capability. The Cadillac is for those who want to stand out and don't mind spending cash on a luxury brand.

13.  Motor Trend's Truck Trend Comparison: 2007 Chevrolet Silverado vs. 2007 Toyota Tundra

Mark Williams

Jan. 2007
reviews rating Truck Trend magazine, a truck-specific derivative of Motor Trend magazine, pits two of the most popular pickups against one another. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of substance behind the piece, since the only experience with the Tundra was had at auto shows. Editors promise a "torture test" in an upcoming issue.
14.  FuelEconomy.gov Most and Least Fuel-Efficient Trucks

Editors of FuelEconomy.gov

Not Dated
reviews rating Fuel Economy.gov does just what the title says: lists the most and least fuel-efficient trucks on the market. Not surprisingly, all three pickups have four-cylinder 2.3 or 2.7-liter engines. Top rated are the Ford Ranger (24 mpg/city, 29 mpg/hwy), Mazda B2300 (24 mpg/city, 29 mpg/hwy) and the Toyota Tacoma (21 mpg/city, 27 mpg/hwy).
15.  Auto Site What's New for 2007: Pickup Trucks

Editors of Autosite.com

Not Dated
reviews rating Autosite.com delivers a nice article that doesn't cover every truck on the market, but focuses on those that are either new for 2007 or have been the subject of major redesigns. Seven trucks are covered, including the Escalade, Avalanche, Silverado, Explorer Sport Trac, Sierra, MXT and the Tundra. It's not a contest, so there's no "winner" to be had, but every vehicle receives two pages' worth of editorial.
16.  PickupTruck.com Truck Reviews

Editors of PickupTruck.com

Not Dated
reviews rating PickupTruck.com is an interesting website. In addition to editorial reviews, there's a large reader forum where owners can rate their own trucks -- there aren't many places online where owners can do this. The editorial reviews aren't too critical, but they're nicely written and easy to read, based on testing usually conducted at auto shows or test tracks.
17.  FuelEconomy.gov 2007 Standard Pickup Trucks

Editors of FuelEconomy.gov

Not Dated
reviews rating If you're really interested in the fuel efficiency of any given pickup truck, this is the place to go. The fuel efficiency ratings for all standard pickup trucks are listed on this page. In addition, there is a bit of additional information as well, such as annual fuel cost, emission levels and the pollution ratings of each truck.
