Fast Answers - Best Snow Tires
Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi
   (*est. $115)

>> Where to buy

Best severe-winter snow tire.

If you live where roads stay snow- and ice-covered all winter, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi is the top choice of several reviewers. The RSi even beats most studded tires at braking on ice in one top test, where it also beats all snow tires at accelerating on ice. In another top test, the RSi offers the least rolling resistance (one key to good gas mileage), besting the top performance tire. However, although testers say the RSi feels safe and secure on snow and ice, it doesn't handle as well on wet or dry pavement.
•  Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50
   (*est. $65)

>> Where to buy

Budget snow tire.

The Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 costs less than any other tire in ConsumerSearch Fast Answers, while still performing very well on wintry roads in tire testing. The WS-50 actually bests the top-rated Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi in one leading test, displaying impressive traction and braking on snow and ice. However, the WS-50 doesn't handle wet pavement as well as a winter performance tire, and reviews warn that it wears out quickly. (compare prices)
•  Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5
   (*est. $120)

>> Where to buy

Studded snow tire.

For drivers in harsh-winter regions who find they get the best results from studded tires, experts say the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 is the best of the bunch. These tires provide a secure driving experience with no surprises. Studded tires have traditionally outclassed studless tires on icy roads, but today that isn't necessarily true. In one test, the studless Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi brakes better on ice than the studded Hakkapeliitta 5. Be aware that some regions restrict the use of studded snow tires, since they contribute to road damage.
•  Continental ContiWinterContact TS810
   (*est. $75)

>> Where to buy

Mild-winter performance tire.

If winter comes and goes in your area -- rainy or dry roads most days, with bouts of snow and ice -- the Continental ContiWinterContact TS810 will keep you ready to handle any road condition, experts say. It is by far the experts' favorite in the performance-winter category, and one Scandinavian comparison review says it's the best overall winter tire, period. However, the TS810 isn't as effective in sustained winter conditions. The TS810 is recommended for cars as well as small SUVs and minivans. (compare prices)
•  Bridgestone Blizzak DM-Z3
   (*est. $125)

>> Where to buy

SUVs/Light Truck.

Many SUV and truck owners stick with their all-season tires in winter, but if you live in a harsher climate, experts say you’ll appreciate the better handling and grip that comes with dedicated winter tires. The Bridgestone Blizzak DM-Z3 wins one top test, performing well on all winter road surfaces -- icy, snowy, wet and dry. (compare prices)

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated March 2008

We enlisted the help of a Swedish translator to prepare our report on snow tires. That's because the best snow and ice tire testing takes place in Scandinavia rather than in the United States. In Sweden, where snow tires are required by law in winter, three publications -- Teknikens Värld, Motorföraren and Auto Motor & Sport -- put winter tires through their paces on some of the northernmost test tracks in the world. These thorough reviews reveal how 39 different models of studded, non-studded and performance winter tires manage in a variety of tests, including the "moose test" -- how well the snow tires handle a swerve on an icy road, as if to avoid an unexpected moose.

Consumer Reports magazine also tests winter tires, and due to its focus on the North American market, editors concentrate on studless tires. Twenty-two tires are tested in Consumer Reports' latest review, but write-ups are not as detailed as those from Teknikens Värld and Motorföraren. A Canadian nonprofit association, the Automobile Protection Association, performs unbiased tests as well. The APA rates 22 studded and non-studded tires for cars, SUVs and minivans.

Reviewers can't agree on the popular Michelin X-Ice (*est. $70); it's either excellent or a big disappointment, depending on whom you ask. The X-Ice won first place in one top North American test, and it was judged better than average in another. Both reviews note that the X-Ice performs well on dry and wet roads, for a snow tire.

However, the more weight a review gives to snow-and-ice performance, the worse the X-Ice does. Scandinavian reviewers are unimpressed with the X-Ice. "Downfall of a giant," Teknikens Värld labels its discussion of the X-Ice, which ranks twelfth out of 14 tires -- just ahead of two off-brand tires Teknikens Värld labels "Avoid!" In Motorföraren's ice-braking test, the X-Ice placed dead last. And in every test at Auto Motor & Sport, the studless X-Ice fell squarely in the middle of the pack. We found more consistent reviews for the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 (*est. $65) .

Unless otherwise stated, pricing estimates in this report are for 195/65-15 tires, such as those appropriate for a 2008 Honda Civic. (Read more on tire sizing in our Important Features section below.)

If you live in a mild climate, you can get by with all-season tires, which are addressed in our other reports on tires and SUV/light truck tires .  ... Continued

However, for constantly harsh winter conditions, reviewers recommend the studless Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi and Bridgestone Blizzak tires, or the studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5.
