1.  Consumer Reports All-Terrain Tires

Editors of Consumer Reports

Jan. 2008
reviews rating In its latest tire-ratings report, Consumer Reports tests 12 all-terrain SUV and light-truck tires, tires that are designed to be used for daily driving on pavement as well as moderate off-road conditions. None of the tires tested are rated as "LT" or light-truck tires -- all carry a passenger-tire designation. The editors' rationale is that most people who buy these tires and vehicles rarely venture off-road, and thus these tires are adequate. Accordingly, Consumer Reports tests the tires only on pavement, with no off-road testing. Consumer Reports does add two new tests this year for all-terrain tires: A hydroplaning test and a road-noise test.
2.  Consumer Reports SUV and pickup tires: All Season Tires

Editors of Consumer Reports

Jan. 2008
reviews rating In this report, Consumer Reports tests 20 all-season SUV and light-truck tires. Editors find big differences between the tires on two measures -- braking distance and rolling resistance -- and few of the tires do well on both. A low rolling resistance boosts fuel economy, but for safety's sake, Consumer Reports advises drivers to choose a tire that brakes well.

3.  Petersen's 4 Wheel & Off Road 4x4 Truck Tires & Wheels

Editors of Petersen's 4 Wheel & Off Road

Not Dated
reviews rating Testers here evaluate new off-road tires as they come on the market. In single-tire reviews, they thoroughly explain the tires' pros and cons in mud, on rocks and on the highway. The tires are not ranked against each other, and testers usually find something to like about each one, so the ratings aren't that critical. Eleven models are tested and recommended.
4.  Four Wheeler Off Road Tires & Wheels

Editors of Four Wheeler

Not Dated
reviews rating Testers here try out tires in hub-deep mud pits and on the highway, as well as on rocky jaunts such as Utah's Wasatch-Cache. Each tire gets its own thorough write-up, but testers do not rate the tires against one another, and reviews are uniformly complimentary, so this review isn't very helpful for narrowing your choices. Seventeen tires are tested and recommended, including both mainstream and specialty brands.

5.  The Tire Rack Tire Survey

Contributors to The Tire Rack

As of Apr. 2008
reviews rating The Tire Rack invites anyone to participate in its cumulative tire survey, which now boasts more than 140,000 contributions since 1997. Owners rate tires in up to eleven categories and are asked to rate their likelihood of purchasing the same tire again. Winners among all-season truck tires are the Goodyear Fortera TripleTred and Avon Tech ST. Among summer tires, the Continental CrossContact UHP and Michelin XPS Rib are noted, and among all-terrain tires, the Pirelli Scorpion ATR and Firestone Destination M/T get top billing.
6.  The Tire Rack Testing Tires for Crossover Vehicles and Refined SUVs

Editors of The Tire Rack

June 2, 2006
reviews rating The Tire Rack staffers test and review tires, but they test car tires more often than SUV or truck tires. This older review is still helpful, though, because it compares three all-season tires that are still on the market: the Michelin Latitude Tour HP, Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S G052 and the winner, the Pirelli Scorpion STR, which is called "a well-rounded tire that delivers good wet grip."
7.  The Tire Rack Goodyear's TripleTred Technology for SUVs and Light Trucks

Editors of The Tire Rack

Oct. 19, 2005
reviews rating Another older review from The Tire Rack compares three still-available all-season tires: the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza, Michelin Cross Terrain SUV and Goodyear Fortera TripleTred. Although testers find that the Bridgestone performs better in both wet and dry braking tests, the first-place Goodyear just barely edges past both the Bridgestone and the Michelin in driving tests on expressway, state highway and county roads.
8.  GreenSeal.org Low Rolling Resistance Tires

Editors of GreenSeal.org

Mar. 2003
reviews rating This review is a few years old, but its still useful, and its the only review we found that concentrates on tires' rolling resistance, a key factor in fuel economy. Green Seal, a nonprofit organization that encourages environmentally responsible purchasing, points out that consumers could increase their cars' gas mileage by as much as 2 mpg simply by choosing tires that roll more easily on the road. This comprehensive overview of rolling resistance concludes with a list of tires that combine good rolling resistance scores with good traction, treadwear and customer satisfaction. Three of the picks are light truck or SUV tires that are currently available in the U.S.: BFGoodrich Long Trail T/A, Michelin XPS Rib and Michelin LTX M/S.
9.  SaferCars.gov Tire Ratings

Editors of SaferCar.gov

As of Apr. 2008
reviews rating The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires manufacturers to test their tires for treadwear, traction and heat resistance, and to label the tires with these ratings. Consumers can look up tires' ratings on this website, either by brand or by rating. NHTSA offers thorough explanations of the ratings, but it does not recommend any tire over another.
10.  Canadian Driver Michelin LTX AT2 Light Truck Tire

James Bergeron

July 19, 2007
reviews rating Canadian reviewer James Bergeron accepts an invitation to Michelin's Alabama launch of the new LTX A/T2 light-truck tire. He admits he is inexperienced with trucks and off-roading, and he relies heavily upon Michelin's corporate description of its tire in this review. He concludes, however, that the tire propels the test truck, a Ford F150, nicely up and down extreme inclines, over rocks and through streams, while remaining as quiet and smooth on the pavement as a luxury touring tire.
11.  Canadian Driver Tire Test: Pirelli Scorpion ATR

Jil McIntosh

Apr. 18, 2006
reviews rating Reviewer Jil McIntosh travels to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the launch of Pirelli's Scorpion ATR tire, to see if it really is equally at home on and off the pavement. A freak hail-and-ice storm doesn't bother the Scorpion ATR on the test track, she reports. It has no problem holding a heavy Hummer on a muddy, nearly vertical slope. Although the trail test through Valley of Fire State Park never really gets off the gravel, McIntosh points out that neither do most light truck and SUV drivers.
12.  Offroaders.com Mud Terrain MT Tire Reviews

Contributors to Offroaders.com

As of Apr. 2008
reviews rating Readers post written reviews and numeric scores for off-road tires at this site, and editors of the site compile them into average scores for each tire. The Super Swamper TSL Bogger is "the mother of all street legal mud tires the one everyone talks about," editors write. When we checked, 72 users had posted reviews for this high-scoring tire. Other tires with quite a few reviews and the highest scores are the SSR Series Super Swamper Radial TSL, Firestone Destination MT Mud Tire and Hankook Dynapro MT RT03.
13.  Offroaders.com All Terrain AT Tire Reviews

Contributors to Offroaders.com

As of Apr. 2008
reviews rating All-terrain tires get fewer reviews than mud tires from users at this site, but they do merit their own ratings chart. When we checked, only one high-scoring tire had collected more than a few reviews: BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO, which had about 90 reviews. Eighty-seven percent of those reviewers said they would recommend this tire.

14.  CarReview.com Tires Top Picks

Contributors to CarReview.com

As of Apr. 2008
reviews rating This site collects user reviews of tires, with 486 models listed. Many of those have no reviews posted, however. Editors of the site have chosen six "Top Picks," tires that have scored at least 4 out of 5 points with between 5 and 71 users reviewing them. One of these is a light truck tire currently available in the U.S.: Goodyear Wrangler AT/S.
15.  Epinions Tire reviews

Contributors to Epinions

As of Apr. 2008
reviews rating Nearly 400 tire models have accumulated reviews from consumers who post at Epinions. Several tires have just a handful of reviews, and some reviews are dated. Different kinds of tires are mixed together -- snow tires, big off-road truck tires and standard car tires -- but if you have a specific tire in mind, you can do a keyword search. Four currently-available SUV/truck tires have achieved a rating of at least 4 out of 5 points with more than ten reviews posted: Michelin Cross Terrain SUV, Michelin LTX M/S, BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM and BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO.
16.  Off-Road.com Hankook DynaPro MT RT03 Tire Review

Rob Sutter

Aug. 8, 2007
reviews rating After being disappointed with a set of BFGoodrich all-terrains, reviewer Rob Sutter takes some friends' advice and tries the Hankook DynaPro MT RT03 on his Hummer H3. After driving 5,000 miles from Massachusetts to the Rockies and back for an organized off-road event, Sutter writes that he is impressed with the Hankook's rock-climbing performance and the tires quietness on the highway.
17.  Off-Road.com Tire Test

Chet Szymecki

Nov. 1, 2005
reviews rating Tester Chet Szymecki writes a glowing review of the Goodyear Wrangler TD, praising its performance on the highway as well as off-road. In East Coast off-roading, he writes that the Wrangler TD handles everything from streams to fallen trees. Szymecki also likes the way the Wrangler TD performs at the West Coast Grand Cherokee trail ride in Moab, Utah, where its necessary to "air down" tires to get enough traction on big, jagged rocks. Szymecki appreciates the fact that the Wrangler TD comes in 16-inch rim sizes.
18.  Off-Road.com Goodyear MTR: Tire Test

Alex Parker

Nov. 1, 2005
reviews rating In another glowing review from Off-Road.com, reviewer Alex Parker tests the Goodyear MT/R on the highway, in a mud bog and -- in the environment for which it was designed -- "aired down" to crawl on rocks. It handles both mud and rocks extremely well, he reports, and it's quieter on the highway and has more durable sidewalls than its predecessor, the Goodyear MT.
19.  Outside Magazine Goodyear Fortera SUV tires

Grant Davis

June 29, 2005
reviews rating Writer Grant Davis installs a set of brand-new Goodyear Fortera SUV tires on his personal Toyota 4Runner and quickly becomes enamored with them after a two-hour wet-driving adventure. A summer rain-and-hail storm convinces Grant that the Fortera is a superior wet-performer that really resists hydroplaning. Grant notes that while other vehicles were stopped, he was able to continue driving the 4Runner at speeds up to 75 miles per hour. Although he appreciates the SilentArmor Kevlar layer, the wet performance of the tire is what immediately impresses him.
20.  Off-Road.com Off-Road Tire Test - Goodyear Wrangler 2005 Product Launch

Dean Waters

Mar. 1, 2005
reviews rating At a media event conducted at Goodyear's testing facility in San Angelo, Texas, for the introduction of the new "SilentArmor" Wrangler, magazine writers drive vehicles equipped with the new Wrangler, as well as the BFGoodrich T/A KO and Goodyear's own Fortera. Although reporter Dean Waters acknowledges that he is not a tire expert, he concludes that the Wrangler is quieter and rides better than the T/A KO. The Wrangler also performs well in a wet pavement test. Off-road tests were cancelled due to deep water on the course.
21.  Road & Track Ampersand Extra

Andrew Bornhop

Feb. 2005
reviews rating In this test drive conducted at Goodyear's testing facility, reviewer Andrew Bornhop compares Goodyear's Fortera SilentArmor and the Michelin Cross Terrain SUV. Both are reasonably quiet, he writes, but adds that the Fortera outperforms the Michelin over bumps and in the wet, with "noticeably better grip than the Michelin." No other tires receive ratings.
22.  J.D. Power & Associates 2007 OE Tire Study -- Pickup Fullsize Van

J.D. Power and Associates

2007
reviews rating J.D. Power and Associates does not test tires, but it does rank tire manufacturers based on customer experiences with original equipment tires on new vehicles. In this survey, Michelin ranks highest in the Pickup/Full-size Van segment, with higher consumer scores than BFGoodrich, Goodyear, Bridgestone or General.
23.  J.D. Power & Associates 2007 OE Tire Study SUV

J.D. Power and Associates

2007
reviews rating This study examines SUV owners' satisfaction with their original equipment tires. J.D. Power rates brands, not specific models. Michelin ranks highest in customer satisfaction, tire ride, traction/grip, wearability, handling and appearance. Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear and Pirelli are also rated.
