10 Best Cars
Csaba Csere and Tony Swan
Jan 2006
For over 20 years, Car and Driver has been putting out an annual "10 Best" list. When it comes to sports coupes, the honor at Car & Driver goes to the Mazda RX-8. "The bottom line: sports-car fun with an element of practicality you just might be able to sell to a significant other," say editors. The bulk of the review compliments the performance of this vehicle’s interior comfort for four passengers.

Each year the editorial staff of Edmunds nominates cars for their annual "Most Wanted" awards. The least expensive coupe in the "Under $15,000" category is the Honda Civic. In the "Under $25,000" bracket, the Ford Mustang is highest rated. The "Under $35,000" award goes to the BMW 3-Series, and the "Under $45,000" winner is the Chevrolet Corvette. Finally, the most expensive coupe recommended is the BMW 6-Series. The reviews are well-written and very thorough, and Edmunds evaluates nearly all cars on the market.

Recommended Vehicles

Consumer Reports annually does research on automobiles. As a matter of fact, Consumer Reports claims that they perform the most extensive scientific research of any car review center in the nation. Consumer Reports keeps an ongoing list of recommended vehicles, but many of the cars on the list of best coupes are from 2003, 2004 or 2005. Older ratings like these are fine if there have been few model changes from year to year, but editors don't make it easy to find this information. Still, editors cover a wide range of vehicles, especially in the lower price ranges.

Motor Trend Announces 2006 Car of the Year
Editors of Motor Trend
Nov. 2005
Motor Trend is one of the most recognized authorities in the automotive world, and for the last 57 years they have been giving one car the title of Motor Trend "Car of the Year." For 2006, this honor falls upon the Honda Civic, which receives a wonderful review from the editorial staff. According to the review, "editors found each of the 2006 Honda Civic models to be fun to drive and terrific value. With their bold, contemporary styling and innovative technology the new Civics are primed for success in one of the most competitive market segments in the country." This is a very helpful review, as the whole testing process is laid out in detail for the reader.

Each year the editors of Autobytel.com get together to rank which cars they would recommend to friends and family. The vehicle which they have chosen as their car of the year is the Honda Civic. A low price tag, reliability and the fact that the Civic has won the best rating for crash-worthiness available from the IIHS are all cited as deciding factors. In addition, the reviewer loves the steering and handling of the Civic Si Coupe.

Best Cars 2006
Lawrence Ulrich
Feb. 2006
Money magazine evaluates cars with an eye to family flexibility and value. They pack the vehicles up and look at the way that they drive, basing results more on feel and driving impression than on timed runs and technical specifications. Many coupes are chosen by the author as highly rated, including the BMW 3-Series, Chevrolet Corvette and the Ford Mustang. Unfortunately, there is no specific coupe category, and the vehicles are found amidst the titles of "best small car," "small luxury sedan" and "sports car."

Drivers Choice Awards
Editors of Motor Week
Apr. 2006
The staff of Motor Week has compared over 100 cars to choose the best of 2006, awarding said vehicles a "Drivers Choice Award." For "best small car," the award goes to the Honda Civic. Testers say that the 2006 Honda Civic has set a new high-bar for small cars. Instead of choosing either the sedan or the coupe when discussing the Honda Civic, the editors of Motor Week say that all models of the Civic are above par and should be given equal honor.

AAA Picks 2006 Top Cars
Editors of AAA Exchange
Not Dated
The official Web site of the AAA motor club, AAA Exchange attempts to educate and inform car owners and consumers so that drivers may be as safe as possible on the road. This includes annual picks for the top-rated cars. Over 200 cars were tested, with testers looking for "many criteria, such as ride, performance, braking, handling, passenger and cargo space, value and fuel economy." Three coupes take the lead in a number of categories for 2006. The BMW 3-Series was chosen in the "$30,000 - $35,000" category, and the Chevrolet Corvette was chosen as the "cool car" of 2006. While this overview from AAA is a nice overview, it lacks the testing detail and editorial depth of other resources.

Comparison Test: 2007 Jaguar XK8 Coupe vs. 2006 BMW 650i Coupe
Scott Oldham
June 2006
Testers drove the 2007 Jaguar XK8 and the 2006 BMW 6-Series from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and here is what they found: The Jaguar is the winner in the looks department and the BMW takes first place pretty much everywhere else. Credit is given to the Jaguar as an excellent vehicle in its own right, but it simply isn't a formidable enough opponent for the BMW 650i. The BMW is more spacious, comfortable and drivable, and it basically ran away with this road test. While this review is not only well-written but extensive, it is lower in the reviews due to the fact that it only compares two coupes.

Consumer Guide Best Buys
Editors of Consumer Guide
As of Aug. 2006
There is no specific category for coupes at Consumer Guide. Rather, they are scattered in among sedans, roadsters and sports cars. While the reviews themselves are not comparative and are not as fun to read as those at other sources, Consumer Guide is an excellent stop for vehicle specifications, pricing and features/options information. Among the cars considered to be Best Buys, the Honda Accord, Honda Civic and Chevrolet Corvette all have a coupe variant. The Scion tC and Ford Mustang also make the cut.

2006 Coupes
Editors of J.D. Power Consumer Center
As of Aug. 2006

JD Power primarily performs large surveys about a wide variety of products. Its auto ratings are based on initial quality and appeal. However, cars don't appear to be rated based on any testing. Still, each write-up includes a nice overview. The top coupes are the Ford Mustang, which is rated highest in the sporty-car segment, and the Toyota Camry Solara, which is highest rated among mid-sized sporty cars.

Automobile of the Year: BMW 3-Series
Mark Gillies
Jan. 2006
According to the introduction of this article, the cars chosen represent what the editorial staff feels are the most charismatic, gorgeous and simply best cars available for 2006. The top of the top is the BMW 3-Series, which article author Mark Gillies commends for its "depth of performance." The article bathes the 3-Series in compliments, offering multiple points for the success of the vehicle. While this is an interesting read, there is no real methodology for choosing the most charismatic vehicle, and this makes the review less useful than it could have been.

Jaguar XK Wins 'Car of the Year' and 'Best Coupe' Awards
Editors of Car Pages
June 25, 2006
Car Pages, which refers to itself as the "UK Motoring Search Engine," reports that the 2006 Jaguar XK was chosen as the "Car of the Year" at the 2006 Auto Express New Car Honours. In addition, the XK also took home the gold in the "best coupe" category. In the words of the article's author, the "launch of the new XK earlier this year marked the beginning of an exciting era for Jaguar in terms of design and engineering, and reinforces the marque's reputation for building beautiful, fast cars that are as thrilling to drive as they are gorgeous to look at." No testing results are quoted, so we're unsure if this award is based on testing or merely image.

Top 10 Vehicles of 2006 on MSN Autos
Editors of MSN Autos
As of Aug. 2006
MSN Autos presents a list of the ten most popular vehicles for the first quarter of 2006. The nice thing about this list is that there is a short summary of the vehicle after the initial listing. The aspect of the review that isn't as helpful is the fact that the summary is just that, a summary. Instead of being a quick review, it is simply a feature listing, with no support for the top ten ranking other than sales figures. In the end, it's interesting but not very helpful.
