2.  Edmunds.com Editors' Most Wanted Vehicles for 2007

Editors of Edmunds.com

Nov. 2006
reviews rating Every year the editorial staff of Edmunds.com takes a look at the vehicles of the new model year, and each casts their votes for the best. For 2007, the sedans chosen that fall into the "family sedan" price range include the Mazda6, Hyundai Azera and BMW 3 Series. What sets Edmunds apart from some lesser reviews is the amount of time that has obviously been put into each review.
3.  Consumer Reports New Cars: A to Z

Editors of Consumer Reports

As of Jan. 2007
reviews rating Consumer Reports does annual road tests of a variety of vehicles throughout the year. The vehicles are driven for months, and are researched very well. Consumer Reports also focuses on some issues not often covered by different reviews, such as safety ratings and fuel economy. The reviews at Consumer Reports are written more for the general car buyer than the automotive elite.
4.  Motor Trend 2007 Motor Trend Car of the Year Award Winner: 2007 Toyota Camry

Staff of Motor Trend

Jan. 2007
reviews rating For the past 57 years, Motor Trend has looked at the vehicles on the market and selected a car of the year. Ratings are based on three categories: significance, superiority and value. For 2007, the car of the year award goes to the Toyota Camry, which bested 27 opponents to win the title. According to the article, the Camry wins because of its broad appeal and excellent price. Seven airbags and ABS are standard features. The redesigned six-speed automatic transmission is fast and responsive. Larger wheels, standard halogen headlamps and a full-featured audio system complete the package.
5.  Money Magazine Most reliable new cars named by Consumer Reports

Editors of Money magazine

Nov. 10, 2006
reviews rating Money magazine comments on Consumer Reports' findings about long-term reliability. In terms of family sedans, most reliable cars include the Honda Accord and Accord Hybrid, Toyota Prius hybrid, Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan. The least reliable family sedan, according to the article, is the Volkswagen Passat. The Chrysler 300 also gets low scores for long-term reliability.
6.  Automobile Magazine 2007 Automobile Magazine All-Stars

Staff of Automobile magazine

Jan. 2007
reviews rating Automobile magazine has printed up their list of all-star vehicles for 2007, and a number of sedans have made the list. The 3 Series BMWs "provide the absolute best combination of all pertinent characteristics." The Chrysler 300C "has maintained its unchallenged domination for the title of Signature American Sedan." The Infiniti G35 is the best entry-level sports sedan. Automobile magazine's car of the year is the Volkswagen GTI, a hatchback covered in our report on economy cars.
7.  Kiplinger.com Kiplinger's 2007 Picks

Mark Solheim and Jessica Anderson

Nov. 2006
reviews rating Kiplinger magazine makes picks for the best 2007 cars in a wide range of classes. These short reviews are interesting in that they also include predicted five-year service costs, predicted three-year and five-year resale value, and insurance costs. In the $20,000 to $25,000 range, the Nissan Altima is judged best in class, while the Saturn Aura is the best new car. The Volkswagen Passat is best for safety. Editors say the $25,000 to $30,000 is the "sweet spot for value." Here, the Hyundai Azera Limited is best in class, with the Toyota Camry SE rated the best new car. The pick for safety is the Saab 9-3 2.0T.
8.  AutoMotoPortal.com Ford Fusion Reigns as

Staff of AutoMotoPortal.com

Not Dated
reviews rating The name of this article says it all: The Ford Fusion has won the title of "car of the year" from the New England Motor Press Association, awarded at the Boston Auto Show. According to the article, ride quality, value and standard safety features put the Fusion ahead of the pack. The reputation of the vehicle and its mixture of fun and practicality make the Ford a winner.
9.  Consumer Guide.com Consumer Guide's Real World Fuel Economy Champions

Tom Appel

Aug. 23, 2006
reviews rating This interesting article covers real-world fuel economy versus government estimates. In the course of their testing, Consumer Guide measures actual fuel economy. This article lists the best and worst performers compared to their EPA estimates. The Toyota Camry Hybrid, Honda Accord and Accord Hybrid do well among family cars -- with actual fuel economy that's in line with government estimates. The Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevrolet Impala and Volkswagen Passat get actual mileage that's significantly lower than their EPA estimates. Among large cars, the Chrysler 300 is notable in that the 300 is one of the better performers, but the 300C is one of the worst with respect to real-world fuel economy.

10.  Cars.com Cars.com Best Bets for Passenger Vehicles

Joe Wiesenfelder

Nov. 2005
reviews rating This review at Cars.com lists "best bets" that offer different things to different buyers. There are a dozen sedans listed, ranging from vehicles under $20,000 to those with price tags of over $40,000. While this review doesn't pinpoint a "winner" per se, it does offer good information and testing. But the reviews are not comparative, and other than this list, there's no attempt to rate or rank cars. We haven't yet seen a "best bet" list for 2007.
11.  Auto123.com Test Fest: Best New Family Car over $30,000

Mathieu St-Pierre

Nov. 2006
reviews rating Auto123.com looks at a number of family sedans for the 2007 model year and then makes a choice as to the best of the year. Cars researched include the Kia Amanti, Nissan Maxima, Saturn Aura and the Volkswagen Passat. However, all of these cars were bested by the Toyota Camry Hybrid, which scores points with the reviewer for braking and handling capabilities.
12.  IFCAR.net Comparison Test: Premium Family Sedans

Staff of IFCAR.net

Not Dated
reviews rating The Institute For Consumer Automotive Research (IFCAR.net) has strict guidelines for its family sedan comparison test. The cars need to be 2006, 2006.5 or 2007 models under $28,000 with an automatic transmission and an engine greater than 180 hp. The site lists 21 cars in order of preference; the Honda Accord holds the top spot, praised in every aspect aside from trunk space.
13.  SPEEDtv.com SPEEDtv.com 10 Best Cars: Family Sedan

Tom Jensen

Nov. 2006
reviews rating SPEEDtv.com puts an interesting spin on the traditional top ten lists by posting a vehicle every week. The criterion by which each car is judged is real-world functionality and enjoyment. The top-placed vehicle in the family sedan category is the Toyota Camry, which is said to excel in nearly every category. The only negative comment is that the power is not amazing, but it is noted that the Camry accelerates quickly enough to not make passing an issue.
14.  Metroparent magazine Best Buys in Family Cars, Part 2

Staff of Metroparent magazine

Nov. 2006
reviews rating Metroparent magazine brings a number of experts in to make their choices for the best family cars. In terms of sedans, six have been chosen by the expert panel: the Toyota Prius, Honda Accord, Toyota Avalon, Ford 500, Volvo C70 and BMW 5 Series. What's nice about this review is that it offers multiple opinions on multiple vehicles instead of focusing on one, definitive winner.
15.  Interest.com Mid-Size Sedans: The Best Family Car

Michelle Krebs

Not Dated
reviews rating Interest.com lists three vehicles which they consider to be "the best value, with an emphasis on price and gas mileage." Their choices are the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Saturn Aura, all of which are said to be exceptional values for their class and competition. Road testing isn't detailed, however, so we are unsure as to the extent of this evaluation.
16.  National Post Spirited Fun for the Family Driver

Graeme Fletcher, Brian Harper, David Menzies and Angela Forgeron

Nov. 2006
reviews rating This article is a listing of reviews for a variety of 2007 vehicles. The helpful aspect of this piece is that it gives readers a number of options for car choices, but there are only brief mentions of road testing. The writeups mostly seem to be an analysis of features and engines, with no overall ratings. Mentioned in no particular order are the Nissan Altima, Saturn Aura, Hyundai Elantra, Mitsubishi Galant Ralliart, Subaru Legacy and Kia Magentis LX.
17.  ArmyTimes.com The Best of 2007: 10 of this year's hottest rides

Eric Peters

Sept. 2006
reviews rating Army Times takes a look at the vehicles of 2007 and makes choices for the best in a number of classes. In the category of family cars, the two winners are the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Saturn Aura. The Grand Prix is chosen for its power and features, while the Aura is an excellent choice due to its spaciousness and high quality in regard to build quality and options.
18.  CNet.com Car Tech

Editors of CNet.com

As of Jan. 2007
reviews rating Technology website CNet.com is better known for reviews of MP3 players and digital cameras, but it's been quietly amassing a decent section of auto reviews with a technology focus. Not only are there a number of single-car reviews available on the site, there are listings such as the top high-tech cars, as well as a community forum. Reviews focus primarily on expensive cars with all the gadgetry, but a few family sedans are covered. Of the 2007 sedans reviewed so far, the Infiniti G35 gets the highest overall rating.
19.  The Mercury News Top Five Family Cars for 2007

Editors of The Mercury News

Oct. 2006
reviews rating The Mercury News delivers what they believe to be the best vehicles available for families in 2007. Each model gets a short writeup and a quote from a third-party expert. However, it doesn't appear that any of these cars were road tested. Featured cars include the Chrysler Sebring, Infiniti G35, Nissan Altima, Saturn Aura and Toyota Camry. Unfortunately, editors don't tell us anything about why these cars are chosen over others.
20.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Variety is king of the road for 2007

Don Hammonds

Oct. 2006
reviews rating The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette offers a list of vehicles that "after weeks of testing, proved especially noteworthy." Family sedans were broken down into two subsections: intermediate family sedans and full-size family sedans. Each vehicle receives a small writeup and a list of technical features. Things that could improve this article include pictures of the listed vehicles, as well as a bit more balance to the categories in terms of cars listed and information given on each vehicle.
