Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Land Rover Range Rover
   (*est. $72,000 to $85,000)

>> Where to buy

Large SUV.

Reviews say this is the best ultra-premium SUV. The Range Rover has an elegant interior that includes real wood and leather. It can comfortably seat five, rides smoothly and has excellent off-road ability. The Range Rover is currently powered by an advanced V8 supplied by BMW, and can reach 60 mph in nine seconds–not bad for a 5,700-pound truck. Expect to pay plenty for gas, because the Range Rover gets a below-average 14 miles per gallon (mpg) in mixed driving.
•  Cadillac SRX
   (*est. $40,000 to $59,000)

>> Where to buy

Mid-sized SUV.

Less expensive and smaller than the Range Rover above, the Cadillac SRX has wowed critics. Reviews say it is stylish, quick and comfortable and that it handles and brakes well for its size. Powered second-row seating makes for added legroom, and the optional third-row seat folds flat into the floor with the push of a button. Experts also like its stadium seating; each row sits a bit higher than the row in front. The Cadillac isn't meant for off-road duty, however, and can't match trail performance of either Land Rover model in Fast Answers.
•  Land Rover LR3
   (*est. $44,330 to $49,330)

>> Where to buy

Mid-sized SUV.

More compact than the Range Rover, the Land Rover LR3 impresses critics for impressive on-road refinement and off-road ability, as well as being a particularly good value. Features include fully independent air suspension that can be lowered for easy loading or raised for extra clearance. It has more useful space than any similar-sized SUV, with 90.3 cubic feet of cargo capability and adult-size third-row seats. Five of the seats fold flat. Reviews say that the LR3's chassis design enables the vehicle to work better on-and-off-road, and that the computer-controlled air suspension makes any road or trail feel paved.
•  Lexus GX470
   (*est. $46,225)

>> Where to buy

Mid-sized SUV.

Had the Land Rover LR3 not been introduced for 2005, the Lexus GX470 may well have taken its place in Fast Answers. However, the Lexus still scores with an excellent reputation for customer service and high resale value. Reviews say it is smooth and powerful on the road and can go nearly anywhere off road. With an optional third-row bench seat, the Lexus is still a good pick though it pales somewhat in the shadow of the Land Rover LR3.

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...

The following report was originally published on ConsumerSearch to cover new cars manufactured and sold in the 2005 model year, and so can offer a good guide as to which cars from past model years are good bets as used vehicles. We are keeping this report on our site as a convenience to our readers who may be shopping for a used car.

The best test reviews on luxury SUVs come from Car and Driver and Motor Trend magazines, which publish the results of comprehensive back-to-back testing in this sector. Testers and editors are automotive experts with significant experience. Another helpful source is the Inside Line section of the Edmunds.com Web site. We found some insightful comparative testing at Inside Line, and along with the editorial reviews, editors include a 'second opinions' section offering alternative viewpoints.

We also found good reviews for luxury SUVs in Consumer Reports magazine, which focuses on safety more than other reviewers (although the magazine's performance testing is not as detailed.) Kiplinger's magazine highlights more pragmatic factors such as cost of ownership and resale value.

Luxury SUVs start in the mid-$30,000s and some top off at almost $100,000. Because they're so pricey, automakers have the flexibility to load them with a wide and seemingly mutually exclusive array of features. You'll find vehicles in this class that can seat seven, scurry up rock-strewn hills and accelerate quickly. While the height and mass of most luxury SUVs prevent them from riding as smoothly or as quickly as the best luxury cars, reviews say they come close. If the models in this report are out of your price range, see our report on mainstream SUVs, some of which attain near-luxury status.

The controversial, gas guzzling, politically charged Hummer H2 (*est. $52,430 to $56,670) has not impressed critics. Based on the Chevrolet Tahoe, this vehicle has a smooth ride and excellent off-road ability (but, at over 81-inches wide, it's not suited for tight trails). It averages an abysmal 10 mpg in city driving and 13 mpg on the highway, and has scored poorly in reliability measures. Although the Hummer made a big splash at first, and was snapped up by Arnold-Schwartzenegger types, 2004 sales were down about 25% for the H2. New for 2005 is a truck version of the H2, with a small bed and tailgate in place of an enclosed cargo area.

Although it's hard to ignore the Hummer's horrible gas mileage, many reviews express surprise at how well it rides. As you might expect in an expensive vehicle, the interior is well appointed; options include leather seats, 17-inch chrome wheels and XM Satellite Radio. Other SUVs get undeniably better reviews, but most people in the market for this type of over-the-top SUV probably don't care.  ... Continued

Cadillac, Land Rover and Lexus clearly dominate the luxury class, and all three are represented in ConsumerSearch Fast Answers. The Dodge Durango may not fit the luxury-class cache, but a wide variety of options allows buyers to outfit the more utilitarian Dodge with some touches of chrome and leather.
