1.  Car and Driver 10 Best Cars

Csaba Csere and Tony Swan

Jan. 2006
reviews rating The staff of Car and Driver has been assembling an annual "Top Ten" list since the early 80s, based on testing of the year's most notable new vehicle. The best thing about the Car and Driver review for fans of sports sedans is the fact that there are two chosen annually: A top sports sedan, and a top luxury sports sedan. The top sports sedan for 2006 is the Acura TSX, which was chosen for refinement and sheer driving enjoyment. The top luxury sports sedan is the BMW 3-series. Reviewers enjoyed the power, ride quality and handling of the 3-series. Excellent writing and research make this review a requirement for any sports sedan shopper.
2.  ForbesAutos.com The 10 Best and Worst Cars for City Driving

Bengt Halvorson

Not Dated
reviews rating Forbes Auto has created a list of the best and worst cars when it comes to driving in the city. Some of the factors that they have taken into account include the size of the vehicle (smaller is better for city driving), turning radius and ease of getting in and out of the car. The highest rated pick for the year is the BMW 325i. The reviewer had excellent impressions of the turning radius and maneuverability of the vehicle. This review is well-written, and takes into consideration factors not often seen in other reviews.
3.  Car and Driver $35,000 Sports Sedans

Aaron Robinson

Oct. 2005
reviews rating Eight sports sedans with an average price of $35,000 duke it out in this Car and Driver comparison road test. As is the standard at Car and Driver, the article is very well researched and well written. Each of the eight cars has a full-page write-up explaining why it received its given rating. In the end, the winner is the BMW 3-series. Author Aaron Robinson says, "BMWs win many of our comparison tests for the same reason marathoners prefer running shoes to mukluks. They just work better for the task at hand." Coming in a close second place was the Lexus IS350.
4.  Consumer Reports Top picks for 2006

Editors of Consumer Reports

Apr. 2006
reviews rating Consumer Reports annually does research on automobiles. What distinguishes Consumer Reports from other reviews is the fact that they take into account safety issues and other things that would be of interest to the average consumer. While many reviews are written for auto buffs, Consumer Reports writes for the average consumer. The ratings are always well researched and very helpful to the prospective car buyer. Each year, editors select a top sports sedan in the $30,000 to $40,000 range.

5.  AutoWeek Double Take: 2006 BMW 330i vs. 2006 Lexus IS 350

Editors of AutoWeek

Feb. 2006
reviews rating Editors of AutoWeek test the two main contenders in the performance sedan market head-to-head to determine once and for all which is the better vehicle. After taking both cars along straight paths and through slalom, the highest ratings by a hair's breadth goes to the BMW 330i. According to the review, this is mainly due to a feature of the Lexus entitled VDIM (Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management). This allows a number of car features to work in unison, but it also allows the Lexus to shift down in turns and disturbs the driving experience. All in all, this is a well-balanced review that gives an interesting perspective on the two major contenders in the market.
6.  Motor Week Drivers Choice Awards

Editors of Motor Week

2006
reviews rating Motor Week tested over 100 vehicles to determine the best of all, awarding each vehicle with its "Drivers Choice Award." In the category of "Best Sports Sedan," the BMW 3-series gets the highest ratings. Reviewers appreciated the responsiveness of the 3-series, as well as the power of the BMW. The 3-series also took home the award of "Most Jane Car," which was a special category for the car that was most appealing to the mid-20, female car consumer. According to Motor Week, the 3-series was chosen "for its winning combination of style with an attitude, superior performance, and pure driving pleasure."
7.  Motor Trend Road Test: 2006 Cadillac STS-v vs. 2006 Mercedes CLS55 AMG

Todd Lassa

Jan. 2006
reviews rating This is a battle that is all about big numbers: Big prices, big engines and big fines for driving either car at max speed. The Mercedes sports sedan boasts an impressive 469-hp, 5.4-L V8 engine and comes in at approximately $86,600. The Cadillac's 469-hp, 4.4-L V8 engine is equally impressive, as is the $74,720 price tag. In the end, however, there can be only one winner. According to Motor Trend, the Mercedes CLS55 AMG gets the higher ratings, due to a higher-quality interior, slightly better performance and high-speed stability.

8.  Automobile.com Automobile Magazine Announces its 2006 Automobile of the Year and All-Star Awards

Editors of Automobile Magazine

Dec. 2005
reviews rating Editors of Automobile Magazine convened to find the best vehicles for 2006. According to Editor-in-Chief Jean Jennings, "This year we went back to basics and chose vehicles that were simply the best, no categories to take into account or pricing or even points--the goal this year was to assemble the perfect fleet." At the top of the ratings is the BMW 3-series, which is said to be a "car that continues to get better and better." To determine the best vehicles, each is driven for 1000 miles, and the editors then gather to discuss each in turn to choose a victor.
9.  Autobytel.com 2006 Editors' Choice Awards

Staff of Autobytel

Not Dated
reviews rating Every Year the staff of Autobytel gets together to test vehicles and determine which ones are the best -- not for car enthusiasts, but for friends and family, or any average car buyer. They test the vehicles out to see how they will perform in the real world and then make recommendations based on these tests. In the sports sedan market, the Lexus IS gets the highest ratings; according to the reviewer, "In terms of comfort, refinement, and more than a pinch of thrill. Nothing beats the 2006 Lexus IS, our pick for Best New Entry Luxury Car of 2006." The review hails the performance of the Lexus IS, as well as the stylish interior.
10.  InsideLine.com 2005 All-Wheel-Drive Luxury Sport Sedan Comparison Test

Ed Hellwig

July 2005
reviews rating While it was written in mid-2005, three of the five cars being compared are 2006 models, which should be more than enough reason for this review to still be pertinent. Unfortunately for the 2006 vehicles in this review, the 2005 Acura RL, which was complimented for performance, power, and a comprehensive list of standard options, beat them both. Second-place ratings go to the 2005 Audi A6 3.2, and the first 2006 to place was the 2006 Infiniti M35x. For more info on the 2005 Acura and Audi, see our review on used sports sedans.
11.  Kiplinger.com 2006 Best Cars: Best in Class

Editors of Kiplinger's Personal Finance

Nov. 2005
reviews rating For this review, Kiplinger's Personal Finance editorial staff considers over 400 vehicles. Vehicles are judged on performance, safety and value, including the price of servicing and upkeep. The winner for vehicles $30,000 to $45,000 was the Acura TL. The only point mentioned in the review was the 258-hp of the vehicle. While it is excellent that so many cars are considered, little information about each car is presented, and testing details aren't outlined.
12.  Money Magazine Best Cars 2006

Lawrence Ulrich

Jan. 2006
reviews rating Every year Money Magazine chooses the best car buys of the year. The main concerns in this ranking are safety and value, including upkeep and resale. Winning the title of "Best Small Luxury Sedan" is the BMW 3-Series, which author Lawrence Ulrich refers to as "one of the best handling cars on the road, period." The 3-series is commended for its power, handling and braking abilities. The title of "Best Mid-Size Luxury Sedan" goes to the Audi A6, which Ulrich says excels in all categories: Design, performance, features and quality. The downside to this article is that the testing procedures for the vehicles are not explained.
13.  AutoWeb.Com Top Ten Buys for 2005, '06 and Beyond

Staff of Autoweb

Not Dated
reviews rating The staff of Autoweb predicted which cars would be the cream of the crop in 2006 by their statistics when they were introduced in the 2005 Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago and New York auto shows. Predictions were made based on the cars' price, features, style and corporate reputation. Two sports sedan choices were made: The Infiniti M and the Lexus IS. Unfortunately, with no real hands-on time with the vehicles, it is impossible for the reviews to be thorough. Still, it is interesting to read the predictions and see how each vehicle has played out in '06.
