Best Overall Values of the Year
Editors of IntelliChoice
Not Dated
For the past 21 years, IntelliChoice has been giving selected vehicles Best Overall Value of the Year awards, in terms of initial pricing as well as ownership costs. Two station wagons win the award for 2007; the Subaru Outback wins in the category of "Midsize/Large Wagon," while the Toyota Matrix wins in the "Small Wagon" category. This report doesn't include a lot of other evaluations, but since few reviewers focus on value and cost of ownership, this review is very helpful.

Wagons and Hatchback reviews
Editors of Consumer Reports
Not Dated
Consumer Reports road tests most new cars, including station wagons. Cars with the highest ratings are given an endorsement by editors. Consumer Reports buys cars from dealerships anonymously, performs their own road tests and does not advertise for any car companies. Because Consumer Reports is a subscription site, we can't disclose their picks. Editors include wagons and hatchbacks in the same category.

The Best of the 2007 Cars
Mark Solheim
Dec. 2006
Kiplinger magazine makes annual picks based on long-term reliability and costs, along with performance and crash-test results. Editors don't write long, detailed reviews. Writeups are short and to the point. But we appreciate the focus on practicality. Awards are given for best overall, most fuel efficient, best for safety, etc.

Consumer Guide's Best Buys and Recommendations for 2007
Editors of ConsumerGuide.com
Nov. 2006
Consumer Guide is an excellent source for pricing and options information, and editors also include road test results. However, reviews are mainly summarized in numerical scores instead of a narrative review. Consumer Guide doesn't have a specific category for station wagons, yet a number of vehicles that received the best buy designation are available as wagons.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, also known as the IIHS, is a non-profit organization focused on minimizing losses accrued by vehicular accidents, whether said losses occur in the form of injury, property damage or otherwise. Unfortunately, there is no station wagon category for crash-test results, but the Audi A4 and A6, Saab 9-3 and Subaru Legacy are all awarded with the status of Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, and all are available as wagons.

Car Buyer's Guide: Wagons
Bengt Halvorson
Sept. 2006
This review gives a lot of information on the evolution of station wagons, along with what users can expect to find on the market currently. The only recommended station wagon is the Mercedes-Benz R63 AMG. Unfortunately, the $87,400 starting price of the vehicle is out of range for most buyers. This review might rank more highly is other wagons were covered.

New car reviews
Don Vorderman
As of Apr. 2007
This website approaches reviews a bit differently. Rather than providing a detailed report, each one-page write-up focuses on the most salient details, like reliability and owner satisfaction. Among wagons, the Dodge Magnum gets a high rating, although its AWD transfer case has been a problem. The Subaru Legacy and Outback are also said to be good choices. Several wagons don't get a specific mention, but the sedan versions are often reviewed here.

Editors of Metroparent magazine
Nov. 2006
Metroparent magazine asks a large handful of automotive experts to identify their top picks and indicate why. The top picks for family station wagons are the Subaru Outback, Ford Freestyle and the Dodge Magnum. It is noted in the review that many consider the Freestyle to be more of an SUV than a true station wagon. The write-up for each car includes the reasoning behind the picks.

Volkswagen Passat Wagon: The Second Best Wagon
The Car Family
Feb. 2007
The premise of the Car Family is that all members of a family chime in with their opinion of a vehicle, offering a more balanced review than can be given by one reviewer. Most members have generally good things to say about the Volkswagen Passat. The Subaru Legacy is still preferred overall, however (hence the title).

Splise.com doesn't beat around the bush: instead of offering up a wordy review, they go the minimalist route. The Splise.com's wagon list simply lists the most popular vehicles in order. It's not the most informative site on the Internet, but it is nice for a quick reference.
