1.  Extreme Tech.com Keyboard Kraziness: Best and Worst

Jeremy Atkinson

Dec. 28, 2006
reviews rating ExtremeTech.com regularly reviews keyboards. This roundup article creates a context for previous reviews by determining the best and worst general, gaming and specialty keyboards. Many keyboards are compared, and each summary is linked to the full review. The Saitek Eclipse II is the best general keyboard. The Wolfking Timberwolf and MERC Gaming Keyboard top the gaming keyboards. The Logitech Media Keyboard is best of six tested sub-$20 keyboards. Reviews are critical and editors discuss underperforming or uncomfortable keyboards in addition to top-rated keyboards.
2.  Extreme Tech.com Input Devices

Editors of ExtremeTech.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating Since last year's roundup article, ExtremeTech editors have reviewed some additional keyboards. Individual product reviews conclude with a list of pros and cons and a rating, and keyboards are compared to previously reviewed models. The review of the Microsoft Reclusa Gaming Keyboard mentions four competing keyboards with more functionality. The Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000 is a good choice for media center PCs.
3.  PC Magazine Keyboards For Less

Loyd Case

Apr. 19, 2006
reviews rating This roundup is also published on the ExtremeTech.com website, and some of the results are summarized in other articles. But if you are interested mainly in spending as little as possible, this article is interesting since none of the six tested keyboards costs more than $20. The Logitech Media Keyboard offers good feedback, with media and Internet buttons. It's rated as the best of the tested keyboards.

4.  PCPro.co.uk Notebook accessories: USB Keyboards

Editors of PCPro.co.uk

Aug. 2006
reviews rating Editors at the UK-based PC Pro spend a month testing and rating computer accessories including full-sized keyboards. The Logitech Media Keyboard Elite is the best of the five tested keyboards. The Saitek Backlit Gaming Keyboard offers better precision, and editors say it offers the best quality and comfort, but it is a gaming keyboard that costs several times more than the Logitech. The best budget keyboard is not available in the U.S. Editors say the Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000 ergonomic keyboard requires too much adjustment. The Targus Compact Keyboard is the most portable of the bunch.
5.  EverythingUSB.com USB Keyboards

Editors of EverythingUSB.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating EverythingUSB.com reviews several keyboards each year. The reviews are practical, detailed and superbly illustrated with photos and screen shots. Editors don't usually compare products, however, and nothing is ranked. Nonetheless, conclusions are assertive and make some distinctions. The Saitek Eclipse II is a very good general-use keyboard, but other keyboards have more gaming-oriented features. The Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 is great for its intended purpose. The Microsoft Reclusa Gaming Keyboard is not recommended. The older Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard is a favorite.
6.  XYZ Computing Input Devices

Sal Cangeloso

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating XYZComputing.com is an extremely prolific reviewer of keyboards, which gives Sal Cangeloso an excellent basis for comparison. The reviews are comprehensive and comparative, and conclusions are satisfactorily decisive, but keyboards aren't rated or ranked. Cangeloso doesn't express unconditional enthusiasm for any of the past dozen keyboards he's evaluated. He specifically does not recommend the Microsoft Reclusa Gaming Keyboard, noting that Razer keyboards are better for gaming and the Microsoft Wireless Desktop 7000 is better for media.

7.  CoolTechZone.com Peripheral Reviews

Gundeep Hora

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating CoolTechZone.com is another site that reviews lots of keyboards, including those exclusively marketed for Macintosh computers. Testing is thorough. Reviews are comprehensive and balanced, but rarely comparative, and products are not rated or ranked. However, conclusions provide excellent guidance -- enough to help readers decide whether to buy a particular keyboard or look for an alternative. The Razer Tarantula and Logitech G15 are outstanding gaming keyboards. Gundeep Hora tested both the PC and Mac versions of the Kensington PilotBoard Wireless Desktop and found the "drawbacks far outnumber the benefits." The Logitech Cordless Desktop MX5000 Laser has some flaws.
8.  HardwareLogic.com Misc. Technology Reviews

Editors of HardwareLogic.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating HardwareLogic.com has only reviewed two keyboards in the past year: the Razer Tarantula and Hiper 1K18A and 1S18A (black and silver versions). Reviews are comparative, illustrated and supported by practical testing. HardwareLogic.com's usually comprehensive ratings are missing for this product category, however, and the reviews lack enough comparison. But the conclusions reached are decisive and informative, with helpful guidance. Finally, HardwareLogic.com links to other good reviews of the same products.
9.  PC Authority Keyboards

Editors of PC Authority (Australia)

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating Australian magazine PC Authority reviews a few keyboards a year, but hasn't looked at a new one since November 2006. Reviews are short, but focus on performance. Some products are rated, but others are not. Reviewer Chris Taylor says the mouse in the Logitech cordless desktop with S510 media remote is painful to use. Ben Mansill feels the same way about the Flexiglow Illuminated Multimedia Keyboard, but the company's xRaider illuminated keyboard is much better. The Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 3200 Laser and do-it-yourself Ergodex DX1 earn high ratings.
10.  Virtual-Hideout.net Keyboards, Mice & Misc. Input Devices

Editors of Virtual-Hideout.net

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating Virtual-Hideout.net's reviews are uneven, and keyboard reviews contain few comparisons, yet testing is often exceptional. Reviews are lavishly illustrated, which is particularly useful for keyboards with unique features. Some keyboards earn a tag as Editor's Choice, Recommended Gear or Approved, but these "ratings" are not explained, nor do we know why some products don't earn a designation. The Saitek Eclipse II is an Editor's Choice, which we guess is the highest honor.
11.  Trusted Reviews Keyboard Reviews

Editors of TrustedReviews.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating TrustedReviews.com is a British site that regularly reviews new keyboards. Reviews include ratings in three subcategories and an overall rating. As direct comparisons are rare, variation in ratings is needed to distinguish one product from another. All three keyboards reviewed so far this year are rated 8/10, and the only product comparison we found is a November 2005 roundup of mini-keyboards. Reviews are professional, covering the major considerations of prospective buyers. The Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard earns the highest rating among recently reviewed keyboards.
12.  CNet.com Keyboard Reviews

Editors of CNet.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating CNet.com reviews more keyboards than any other publication. The reviews are frequently directly comparative and often balanced. On the other hand, testing isn't well documented, and all of the keyboards ever reviewed by CNet are above average or better. In fact, the worst keyboard -- the Saitek Eclipse II (which is top-rated by most other reviewers) -- is rated "good." The Razer Tarantula earns an Editors' Choice award, but reviewer Rich Brown only covers its use for gaming.
13.  HardwareCentral.com 2007 Keyboard Reviews

Eric Grevstad

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating HardwareCentral periodically reviews keyboards. Products aren't compared, but overall and subcategory ratings provide distinctions. Most of each review is devoted to describing the usage of each feature. The Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 3200 Laser earns the maximum rating, even though keyboard performance is just above average. The Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000 is rated a couple of notches lower, but nothing in the reviews indicates why.
14.  Techtree.com Keyboards: Reviews

Editors of Techtree.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating India-based Techtree.com reviews a few keyboards a year, but not all are reviewed by the same person, so there's only a minimal basis for comparison. Perhaps that's why the reviews rarely reference competing products. Reviews are often thorough, but focused on features, and the ultimate ratings are always similar. Some unique features are illustrated. The older Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 earns a 4.5-star rating. The Logitech Cordless Desktop S510, Creative Prodikeys DM Value, Logitech Ultra Flat Keyboard and Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard are all rated 4 stars.
15.  FastLaneHW.com Input Devices

Editors of FastLaneHardware.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating FastLaneHardware.com occasionally reviews keyboards. The computer hardware review site conducts productive real-world testing. Reviews are balanced, and special functions are documented with photographs. Each keyboard review concludes with a list of pros and cons and a rating. Often, the ratings are consistently much higher than the reviewer's criticisms indicate they should be. The Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5000 Laser and Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 3100 are both rated 9/10. Reviewer Kai Chin expresses extreme frustration with lag problems on both the keyboard and mouse of the MX 5000, but in a follow-up, he says a software revision nearly solves the problem.
16.  Newegg.com Keyboard Reviews

Contributors to Newegg.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating Technology retailer Newegg.com allows visitors to review and rate products and list pros and cons. The site is popular with hobbyist computer builders, which means it attracts game players. A dozen keyboards have more than 100 reviews, and all but the Logitech MX 5000 have 4- or 5-star average ratings. The Saitek Eclipse has the most reviews and the highest average rating. The Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard is handily the second most popular keyboard. The sub-$10 Logitech 350 and Logitech 250 both have 50 user reviews and perfect average ratings.
17.  Amazon.com Keyboard Reviews

Contributors to Amazon.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating Amazon.com customers generally have experience with too few keyboards to have a frame of reference, but they often write thoughtful reviews and reveal considerations that professional reviewers miss. Since comfort is a personal matter, user opinions about keyboards are highly worth considering. Be aware that some retailers sell more keyboard brands than Amazon does. Five keyboards have at least 50 reviews and the highest average ratings: Logitech Cordless Desktop LX 300, Logitech diNovo Edge, Microsoft Digital Media Pro Keyboard, Saitek Eclipse II, and Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 3200 Laser.

18.  Tom’s Hardware Guide Are You Key-Bored? Maybe It's Time for Something New

Christiaan Allebest

Apr. 9, 2005
reviews rating In this outdated review, Christiaan Allebest looks at the Belkin MediaPilot (now discontinued) and the Saitek Eclipse Keyboard. Allebest loves the Saitek keyboard's illuminated keys. The light can be adjusted from high to low, the touch is just right and the keyboard includes volume controls. This review predates the Saitek Eclipse II and many other potentially better keyboards.
19.  PC World Keyboard Reviews

Editors of PC World

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating After a long gap, PC World recently reviewed two keyboards. The Kensington Ci70 Desktop Set (Titanium) is stylish and flat. While the keyboard is both PC and Mac compatible, reviewer Michael S. Lasky says the layout will be more comfortable for Mac users. The keys also have less tactile feedback than most keyboards. If you have your PC connected to your TV, Narasu Rebbapragada says you might like the Gyration Media Center and PC Suite. In an older report, Lasky says Microsoft's Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 required some adjustment to get used to the design, but the results were worth it.
20.  MaximumPC.com Keyboard Reviews

Editors of MaximumPC.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating Maximum PC's reviews are short; they are neither comparative nor documented with illustration. Products are rated, but Maximum PC reviews keyboards too infrequently to have much of a frame of reference. The reviews are balanced and performance-oriented. The top-rated keyboard is the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, but the review dates to February 2006. The Wolfking Timber Wolf has an innovative design for gaming, but is unsuitable for work. The Ideazon Merc is a little better in that regard. The Microsoft Entertainment Desktop 7000 is decent for a living room PC.
21.  ThinkComputers.org Input Device Reviews

Editors of ThinkComputers.org

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating ThinkComputers.org reviews more keyboards than anyone but CNet.com. And as at CNet, all keyboards earn high ratings. Reviews are consistent with the ratings, which means they are very favorable. If you don't mind gushing enthusiasm, ThinkComputers.org's reviews are presented well.
22.  Tweaknews.net Computer Keyboard/ Mouse/ Controller/ Mousepad Reviews

Editors of TweakNews.net

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating TweakNews.net reviews two keyboards and a game pad. The reviews are very long, yet not comprehensive. Performance gets less attention than features and appearance. All three products earn either the Top Rank Award or a Great Product designation, and the reviews are written by three different people. However, reviewer Nathan Glentworth says the Saitek Eclipse II is his favorite keyboard.
23.  Lordpercy.com Computer Peripheral Reviews

Editors of Lordpercy.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating Lordpercy.com periodically reviews keyboards. The reviews at this British site are usually entertaining and informative, but never comparative. Although the reviews are balanced, editors like all the keyboards they've reviewed in the past couple of years. Without ratings or decisive conclusions, no reviewed keyboard stands out as being better or worse than the others, though the Logitech Di Novo Media Desktop, a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo, appears to be a favorite.
24.  Tom’s Hardware Guide Microsoft MCE Keyboard: The Missing Link

Stéphane Kauffmann

Aug. 15, 2005
reviews rating In this outdated single-product review, Stéphane Kauffmann reviews the Microsoft MCE Keyboard, which is meant to work on your lap in a living room. Although the trackpoint mouse controller takes some getting used to, Kauffmann says it performs all standard tasks in Windows, but is cumbersome for graphics or gaming purposes. The keyboard feels "firm and precise" with good ergonomics.

25.  3Dxtreme.net Input Devices / Accessories Reviews

Dean Nottis

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating 3Dxtreme.net reviews every type of gaming-oriented input device, including some from brands that aren't often reviewed elsewhere. The five most recently reviewed keyboards are all rated a perfect "10" and have no listed downsides at all.
26.  PC World Compute in Comfort

Steve Manes and Angela Gunn

Jan. 20, 2006
reviews rating The authors debate what it means for a product to be ergonomic, since there is no accrediting body that decides this. They look at the Microsoft Comfort Keyboard 4000 and whether it qualifies as ergonomic. The authors say that ergonomics often mean common sense -- if you feel pain, figure out what motion is causing the pain, and then fix it. The article is more about ergonomics than rating this particular keyboard, though it goes through the Comfort Keyboard 4000's features and their pros and cons in detail.
27.  Futurelooks.com Saitek Backlit PC Gaming Keyboard Review

Clayton Blacker

Apr. 20, 2005
reviews rating In this lengthy single-product review, Clayton Blacker claims the Saitek gaming keyboard did improve gaming a bit. The keyboard isn't compared to any other gaming keyboards.
28.  APHNetworks.com Reviews | Logitech MX3200

Jonathan Kwan

Oct. 21, 2006
reviews rating In this balanced review of the Logitech MX 3200 Cordless Laser Set, which includes a keyboard and a mouse, Jonathan Kwan says both are great, but that the mouse is not suitable for serious graphics or gaming. He is impressed with the wireless range, absence of lag and antimicrobial treatment on the keyboard surface. The LCD screen is underutilized and the keyboard has no number lock or caps lock indicators.
29.  CircuitCity.com Keyboard Reviews

Contributors to CircuitCity.com

As of Aug. 2007
reviews rating The website of this large consumer electronics chain should be a good spot for user reviews because product owners rate keyboards for ease of use, performance, design and cost-benefit, and give them an overall rating. However, user comments are brief and all keyboards with more than a handful of user reviews have uniformly high average ratings. We found far more user reviews at Newegg.com and Amazon.com.
