Test: Laser printers
Editors of Choice.com.au
Aug. 2007
|
|
Choice is a not-for-profit Australian organization that is similar to Consumers Union in the U.S. The magazine's editors review a dozen inexpensive monochrome laser printers in this comparison test. Most models are available in the U.S. Print quality is the most important consideration and each laser printer is scored and ranked. Another chart compares measured cost-of-use. Editors say cost-of-use differences are drastic and should be considered as much as the initial purchase price. A list of good points and bad points is provided for each printer. The HP LaserJet 1022 is rated best overall, while the Brother HL-2040 is considered the best value.

Mono laser printers
Simon Handby
As of Oct. 2007

|
UK's Computer Shopper – not related to the U.S. magazine with the same name – has reviewed nine monochrome laser printers in the last year. The chart includes the magazine's ratings and awards (if any) and links to the full reviews. Reviews are very short, but concise and substantive. Comparisons are relevant and reviews are productive. Descriptions of text and image quality are detailed. The Samsung ML-2510 is rated a Best Buy. It's twice as fast as the similarly priced HP LaserJet 1018. The OKI B4100 is a Best Budget Buy.

Laser printer reviews
M. David Stone
As of Oct. 2007
|
|
Along with occasional roundup articles, David Stone regularly reviews individual new printers for PC Magazine. However, the magazine has devoted most of its recent attention to color laser printers. The reviews are balanced, comparative and thorough. Detailed benchmark results show comparative speeds. Each printer is rated and top models receive an Editor's Choice designation. However, no model reviewed in the past year is honored and Stone does not express a clear preference for any current monochrome laser printer. In an older roundup, the Lexmark E120n is rated the best of three cheap laser printers. In newer reviews, the moderately priced Lexmark E250dn and Dell Laser Printer 1720dn earn higher ratings.

Personal Laser Printers Roundup: Monochrome Printing
Vasily Melnik
Jan. 19, 2006
|
|
This roundup of nine monochrome laser printers is by far the best review we find, but its age and the fact that some models were never sold in the U.S. reduce its current usefulness. Documentation is superb and unparalleled. Scans show text and image quality at various resolutions. A whopping 38 pages are devoted to analyzing each printer in depth. Each monochrome laser printer is summarized and carefully positioned in the conclusion. The OKI B4100 LED printer stands out for outstanding print quality and a straight paper path.

Laser Printer Reviews
Felisa Yang
As of Oct. 2007
|
|
Cnet.com regularly reviews new laser printers. The reviews are satisfactorily comparative and Felisa Yang does a fine job of positioning each printer. Reviews are overly focused on features, and design and speed are evaluated before print quality is even addressed in each review. While the better reviewers attempt to measure cost-of-use, CNet relies on the manufacturers' number of pages per cartridge ratings. (The Choice magazine cost-of-use tests referenced above confirm that manufacturers' ratings may be conservative or liberal, but aren't realistic.) No model reviewed in the past year is honored as an Editor's Choice.

Monochrome Laser Printer Reviews
Simon Williams
As of Oct. 2007
|
|
UK website TrustedReviews is one of the most prolific reviewers of all types of printers, including about ten monochrome laser printers this year. Testing is shallow, however, and no proof of text or graphics quality is provided. Speed is measured and cost-of-use is reported, but we aren't certain if Simon Williams attempts to calculate the figure or uses the manufacturers' claims. The reviews are balanced, occasionally comparative, objective and performance-oriented. Two models are recommended: a Canon printer not sold in the U.S. and the Brother HL-2070N. The Brother is strong in all areas except cost-of-use.

U.K. magazine Personal Computer World covers a good selection of modestly priced laser printers, most of which are also sold in the U.S. The reviews are short and only generally comparative, but substantive. Overall and subcategory ratings provide some distinctions, but none of the subcategories cover any aspect of performance. Conclusions marginally give readers a good idea if they want to buy a particular model. No documentation is provided. Of monochrome laser printers rated in the past year, only the Dell 1720dn earns a recommended designation. Simon Crisp says this model is ideal for home or small offices.

Inkjet and Laser Printer Reviews
Editors of IT Reviews.co.uk
As of Oct. 2007
|
|
UK website IT Reviews provides a steady flow of individual laser printer reviews. The reviews are short and non-comparative, and products aren't rated or ranked. Yet, this is an exceptional secondary source for information because other reviews neglect to state the true resolution of each printer. IT Reviews always does, and this specification makes a huge difference in fine print quality. Most reviewers either don't mention resolution or use the manufacturers' software-enhanced figures. Balance and objectivity are the other strengths of IT Reviews' reviews. Some models earn IT Reviews' "Recommended" seal, but the most recently honored printer is the Brother HL-5280DW from June 2006.

Explanations of text and image quality at Consumer Guide are more descriptive than what most reviews provide. The reviews are easy to read and well-balanced. Consumer Guide reviews as many laser printers as anyone, which provides a good frame of reference. However, ratings provide the only method of comparison. Other shortcomings include the absence of documentation or explanation of test methodology. In this product category, Consumer Guide provides a good spectrum of ratings. The Lexmark E120n is selected as a Budget Buy. Although many printers have subsequently been reviewed, the Brother HL-5250DN still stands as a Best Buy with an overall "excellent" rating.

Printers-- Regular
Editors of Consumer Reports
June 2007

|
Only three laser printers are tested in Consumer Reports' latest printer roundup. All the other printers on the comparison chart are inkjets. Editors neither chart nor describe qualitative differences between the three models, two of which are the same brand. Eleven of the charted inkjets earn equal or higher scores than the top-rated laser printer, but editors do not explain why. As is the case with many review sources, the top-rated model costs much more than the others in the ratings chart.

Top 10 Monochrome Laser Printers
Danny Allen
Aug. 10, 2006
|
|
This chart ranks monochrome laser printers previously reviewed by PC World. Although the article bears an August 2007 date, the chart shows that each model was last rated (not reviewed) on October 6, 2006, which is still a long time ago in computer-product years. Individual reviews are not comparative and are largely descriptive. Text and image quality are described, but not shown. However, testing is very good, and the test reports provide a basis for comparison. The reports show speed tests for a variety of documents and include the most comprehensive list of features and specifications we've found.

Printer Reviews
Editors of Printer Showcase
As of Oct. 2007

|
Printer Showcase is a retailer that reviews the printers it sells. The company may be motivated to give the best reviews to the printers with the highest profit margins, but the editors seem to make an effort to be objective, rating the printers on setup, print quality, speed, paper handling, supplies and service/reliability. The company claims "unbiased real-world information;" service technicians, managers and sales people all provide input.

HP LaserJet 1018
Robin Morris
Aug. 16, 2006
|
|
Robin Morris is impressed with the LaserJet 1018's low price and small size. The reviewer for the British publication says the text quality is very good, although, "It's not the cleanest or sharpest we've seen." Morris says the printer produced 10.9 pages per minute in their real-world test. Although the review is comparative and the printer is rated, the magazine does not review another current model printer. We wish more printers had been reviewed.

This British consumer magazine reviews just three monochrome laser printers in its roundup review of all types of printers. The Canon model is not sold in the U.S., which leaves the Dell 1110 and HP LaserJet 1018. Editors have very similar praise and criticism for both printers, the middling scores are close and neither model is selected as a Best Buy. The seven sub-category ratings ought to be very helpful, but both printers earn identical scores there as well. With just two monochrome laser printers to consider and little distinction between them, readers get very little guidance from these reviews.

PC World rates Newegg.com as the best online computer-product retailer. Newegg.com sells ten brands of laser printers. At the time of our visit, 20 printers have more than ten reviews. With 260 reviews, the HP LaserJet 1020 is easily the most popular monochrome laser printer and 79% of customers give it the top rating. The lack of Windows Vista drivers is an issue. The Brother HL-2070N has more than 100 reviews and a slightly higher level of satisfaction. All of the Brother printers have top average ratings. That isn't the case with other brands.

Amazon.com sells a typical selection of consumer laser printers. Users are invited to provide opinions of products they've purchased. Only older models have a lot of reviews, but some have more than 100 ratings. Amazon is useful for two purposes: identifying models with particularly high or low average ratings and finding common complaints. Samsung printers don't sell or rate as well as other brands.

12 Monochrome Laser Printers
Justin Korelc, Ed Tittel
Aug. 14, 2007

|
Tom's Hardware conducts large group reviews of all printing products this year. Each individual review in this article is unduly short and more informative than evaluative. Text and image quality are barely addressed and are never compared. Each printer is evaluated based on specifications and capabilities more than on performance. No measurement is referenced and no documentation of quality is provided. The authors select four monochrome laser printers as the best.

XYZ Computing periodically reviews printers, but only from the Samsung line. The only recently reviewed model is the Samsung ML-2571N, and the review is not comparative, even with other Samsung monochrome laser printers. Testing and documentation fall well short of what XYZ Computing provides with other products. Nonetheless, the review is very well balanced and Sal Cangeloso excellently positions the product – at least for consumers who are only considering Samsung printers.

Dave Stephenson
As of Oct. 2007

|
Editors here review only one monochrome laser printer this year -- the Samsung ML-2510. The Lexmark E120n was rated last October. Both budget models are recommended. The two models are compared in some respects, but not text quality. Although Dave Stephenson sees the Samsung as a better value, his description of text quality makes it seem unimpressive. Thus, the Lexmark earns a higher sub-category for performance, but the Samsung is rated a better value.

Itp publishes English-language magazines for the Middle East market. Jason Saundalkar reviews and slightly compares five monochrome laser printers in this roundup. All models are available in the U.S. Reviews are just a few paragraphs. Image quality is barely addressed, if at all. The reviews have some useful information, such as which printer is the noisiest of the five. The Samsung ML-2571N receives a Best Value award. The HP LaserJet 1020 has the lowest rating.

Australia's GoodGearGuide and sister publication Australian PC World review a couple of laser printers per year. The reviews are uneven and some are very short. Features garner the bulk of reviewer attention. Summaries barely reference print quality, so we suspect ratings are largely based on features. Comparisons are never made and most monochrome laser printers receive similar ratings.

Brother HL-2070N Laser Printer
Vanessa Beaulac
Aug. 11, 2005

|
In this older single-product review, Target PC rates the Brother HL-2070N a nine on a one-to-ten scale, but the magazine has not reviewed another laser printer in years. Vanessa Beaulac is pleased with the Brother's image quality, but says it's less than perfect. The text quality is "rich" and "clear." She does not mention any experience with other printers.

HL-5150D Laser Printer
Collin Keefe
Oct. 5, 2006
|
|
The reviewer thoroughly tests the Brother HL-5150D, but seems to lack a frame of reference for understanding the results of his tests. Like his peers at several other periodicals, Collin Keefe sees inexpensive laser printers as alternatives to inkjets. That's valuable buying advice, but useless for evaluating a specific laser printer. Although Keefe provides no clearly stated evaluative information, macHOME gives the HL-5150D a high four-apple rating on a one-to-five scale. The magazine has not reviewed another laser printer in recent years.

Retail giant Circuit City allows customers to review and rate products on its website. We find just four laser printers with a statistically significant number of user reviews. All are sub-$180 models and they have similar ratings. One rave review is accompanied with bottom overall and subcategory ratings; clearly the customer thought "one" was the top rating. Discounting that, all ratings are the same. In fact, we find only three negative reviews among all reviews for these four printers.

Samsung ML 2010 [LF1] Laser Printer
Jacob Lumetta
Jan. 18, 2006
|
|
Jacob Lumetta feels that image quality is unimportant because the Samsung ML-2010 is so cheap. That doesn't explain why he says nothing about text quality, although he notes that printing text is the printer's primary intended use. A brief chart summarizing benefits incorrectly shows Samsung's one-year limited warranty as three years, which is one of the reasons why Lumetta says this printer is "highly recommended."
