Fast Answers - Best Batteries
Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Sanyo eneloop Rechargeable
   (*est. $10 per four-pack, AA)

>> Where to buy

Best rechargeable batteries.

Both professional and owner-written reviews rave about these hybrid batteries because they have all the advantages of rechargeable NiMH batteries, yet come pre-charged and ready to use. Unlike most rechargeable batteries, the Sanyo eneloop batteries lose their charge extremely slowly, so after six months in storage, they're still 90 percent charged. Furthermore, they can be recharged 1,000 times. These batteries also come in AAA size, and Sanyo makes adapters that enable you to use AA and AAA batteries in devices that take C and D batteries. Various kits and chargers are available, including a charger that plugs into any USB port. (compare prices)
•  Energizer e2 Lithium
    (*est. $12 per four-pack, AA)

>> Where to buy

Best disposable batteries for digital cameras.

Experts say that hybrid rechargeable batteries like the Sanyo eneloop rechargeables are best for most situations. However, if it's inconvenient to recharge batteries (if you're traveling, for example), reviews consistently praise Energizer e2 Lithium as the best disposable batteries for digital cameras. They cost more than most disposable batteries, but comparison tests show that they last so long that each photo actually costs less to shoot. Recovery time and flash power are also excellent. Lithium batteries are light, work well at low temperatures and have a long shelf life of up to ten years. The Energizer lithium batteries come in AA and AAA sizes. (compare prices)
•  Duracell CopperTop alkaline
   (*est. $3.50 per four-pack, AA)

>> Where to buy

Disposable alkaline batteries.

Among standard alkaline cells, Duracell CopperTop batteries outlast most other brands by a nose, and they are available in AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt sizes. Alkaline batteries are the best value for low-drain electronics like smoke detectors, since they don't drain when not being used. Although lithium disposable batteries can last longer, alkaline cells are much less expensive and easier to find in stores. (compare prices)

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated July 2008

We found excellent performance tests of batteries, but the big roundup reviews at Consumer Reports and its Australian equivalent, Choice magazine, aren't recent enough to cover new hybrid rechargeable batteries that come pre-charged and hold their charge well between uses. Reviews at a personal enthusiast site, written by Michael G. Hains, are more current, as are the reviews by an engineer testing hybrid batteries for a DPReview.com forum, and by an aviation enthusiast, Stefan Vorkoetter. The top-ranked Sanyo eneloop (*est. $15/4) hybrid batteries also receive over 350 reviews - far more than most products -- from owners at Amazon.com.

Hybrid batteries also get good coverage by technology writers at USA Today and The New York Times, as well as in computer magazines. This is partly because they're an extremely cost-effective investment - and a "green" product most people can easily afford.

There's a fair amount of buzz about new rechargeable batteries with built-in USB chargers, eliminating the need for a separate charger as long as you have a laptop or desktop computer handy. Reviews find them practical, but not the best value. The USBCell rechargeable batteries (*est. $20 per pair) made by Moixa not only cost more than hybrid batteries, but lose their charge much faster.

We also found quite a few reviews comparing the oxyhydroxide Panasonic Oxyride (*est. $12 for four AAs) disposable batteries, since they provide more voltage and last at least 50 percent longer than regular alkaline batteries that cost about the same. However, test after test shows that the best disposable battery for digital cameras is the Energizer e2 Lithium (*est. $12 per four-pack, AA) .

As for regular alkaline batteries, reviews recommend buying based on price, as long as you stick with major brands or well-known store brands. Comparison tests show only tiny differences among alkaline batteries when it comes to performance and battery life. Since they keep their charge for about seven years, it's fine to buy them in bulk when you do find an especially good price. However, hybrid batteries are the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly choice.  ... Continued

The eneloop and Hybrio batteries get top ranking among hybrid rechargeable batteries, and are recommended for most purposes. If long runtime is the priority for digital camera use, reviews recommend Energizer e2 Lithium batteries. Panasonic Oxyride batteries are recommended over alkaline batteries unless you find the latter at an especially good price.
