Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Infinity Total Solutions TSS-450
   (*est. $175)

>> Where to buy

Best budget home theater speakers.

The Infinity TSS-450 is a 5.1 surround-sound system. Unlike some other budget speakers, this speaker set includes a 100-watt powered subwoofer. Reviews say that despite its low price, sound reproduction is very accurate and the system is capable of delivering pleasing bass in smaller rooms. Furthermore, experts say dialogue sounds crisp and clear. The sub is bulky, but the satellites are small -- a benefit in rooms that might otherwise be overwhelmed by five full-sized speakers plus a subwoofer. According to reviews, the Infinity TSS-450 outperforms its price, but some say the midrange is a little weak. (compare prices)
•  Onkyo SKS-HT240
   (*est. $350)

>> Where to buy

Wall-mountable surround-sound speakers.

Shallow speakers can look great mounted on a wall next to a flat-screen TV, but sometimes style overwhelms performance. According to reviews, that's not the case with the highly rated Onkyo SKS-HT240, a 6.1-channel speaker kit with satellite and center channel speakers that are just 3.5 inches thick. These nice-looking speakers can be wall mounted or used with their included stands. The floor-mounted 150-watt subwoofer is more powerful than most in this price range. Reviews say the SKS-HT240 can fill a 400-square-foot room with distortion-free sound. (compare prices)
•  HSU Research Ventriloquist Performance 1
   (*est. $500)

>> Where to buy

Best value, limited availability.

Innovative technology allows the tiny satellites in this 5.1-speaker package to deliver audio with the tonal warmth and presence of larger and more expensive speakers. The catch is that you can only order the HSU speakers through the manufacturer, so you can't preview them unless you happen to live in Orange County, California. Despite this limitation, experts say the speakers do a fantastic job of accurately placing sounds. Gentle sounds of ocean waves and room-shattering explosions are delivered with equal realism, and the system does a great job with dialogue and music as well. This speaker set is meant for smaller rooms, but a more powerful subwoofer for larger rooms is also available.
•  Mirage Nanosat
   (*est. $800)

>> Where to buy

High-end compact home-theater speakers.

For the best room-filling sound from small speakers, the Mirage Nanosat uses the company's Omnipolar design to create an expansive sound field. This means everyone -- not just the select few sitting in the surround field's sweet spot -- can fully enjoy a movie's dialogue and special effects. Critics are impressed by how much volume these tiny speakers can generate, and say that they can fill even a fair-sized room with great nuance and rumbling bass. Like all small speakers, experts say the Nanosat can sound "light" with certain material, but that's not a major shortcoming in most reviews. (compare prices)
•  KEF KHT-3005
   (*est. $1,500)

>> Where to buy

Luxury surround-sound speakers.

Experts say that the KEF KHT-3005 is a great marriage of style and performance. The strikingly styled, egg-shaped satellites have cast aluminum housings finished in high-gloss black or silver. The result is a speaker system that reviews say looks even more expensive than it is. They also say that the KHT-3005 sounds as good as it looks. Critics are impressed at the accuracy and depth of the sound the speakers deliver no matter what the material. Music playback is especially impressive. A 250-watt-powered subwoofer completes the speaker kit, which can fill even a large space with great sound. (compare prices)

Updated August 2007

CNet.com is currently the best place to read about home theater speakers, especially if you want to spend less than $1,000. The site's home theater speaker reviews are updated regularly, and though not as detailed as those at audio and video enthusiast websites and magazines, provide plenty of information for non-techies. Enthusiast magazines and websites, including Sound & Vision and The Perfect Vision, offer richly detailed reports and make recommendations, but don't do as good a job of comparing home theater speakers. They also tend to focus mainly on pie-in-the-sky speaker systems that cost up to $17,000. Consumer Reports rates and compares home theater speakers, but doesn't cover nearly as many models. Editors offer little in the way of discussion or insight, and the report is out of date. Helpful owner opinions about home theater speakers can be found at AVSForum.com, Amazon.com, CircuitCity.com and elsewhere.

One issue with buying home theater speakers is the wide range of options and prices available. Complete surround-sound speaker packages can be had for under $100, or cost as much as a moderately priced mid-sized sedan. Audio aficionados sometimes disparage budget speakers, and many are poor performers with insufficient bass, buzzy high frequencies and inaccurate sound reproduction. But there are also a lot of affordable home theater speaker systems that can produce audio -- both TV and music -- that will please all but the most critical or status-conscious listener. Our focus in this update is on those systems that cost less than about $1,500.

If you don't want to spend so much on speakers, consider a home theater in a box. This type of kit is aimed at those who want to minimize their number of decisions and keep costs down. Home theater systems include a matched receiver/DVD player and surround-sound speakers.in one box. Systems can be had for as little as $200. See our report on home-theater systems for more on this type of kit.

Surprisingly, some low-priced home theater speakers can outperform more expensive setups. A case in point is the low priced Infinity Total Solutions TSS-450 (*est. $175) , which has been the subject of fairly strong professional and user reviews. Infinity's more expensive TSS-800 (*est. $800) has not fared as well, however. According to reviews, the subwoofer is not a good sonic match to the elegantly styled satellite speakers in the TSS-800, and the speaker system in general has trouble handling all sorts of audio material. Particularly troubling, according to CNet.com's Steve Guttenberg, is the system's poor performance with high-energy films: "the TSS-800 could play nice and loud, but the dynamic punch was a nonevent," he says.

On the other hand, critics say the satellites included with the Infinity TSS-800 home theater speaker system are of high quality and capable of playing material that's not strong on bass with amazing clarity. But again, with music playback, bass-heavy rock music doesn't sound as great as it should with $800 speakers.  ... Continued

Despite the large number of home theater speakers on the market in a bewildering range of prices, we did find reviewer consensus on several surround-sound speakers, including some budget systems. HSU and SVS speakers are only sold directly through the manufacturer, so these are hard to find. Others are more widely available. Among budget setups, the Infinity Total Solutions TSS-450 has a true subwoofer while the Fluance AV-HTB does not. The Onkyo SKS-HT240 are especially recommended as wall-mountable speakers to accompany a flat-screen TV. The Mirage Nanosat's satellite speakers are tiny, yet reviews say their multidirectional technology lets them accurately fill a family room with sound. As for high-end speakers, the KEF KHT-3005 are a better value than the NHT Verve IV.
