Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Sony MZ-RH1
   (*est. $335)

>> Where to buy

Portable MiniDisc player/recorder.

Minidisc players have been almost entirely eclipsed by MP3 players, but experts say MiniDisc recorders are much better than MP3 players for making recordings -- especially live recordings of concerts and lectures. While Sony offers just one current portable model, reviews say the Sony MZ-RH1 is an excellent recording machine. The Sony MiniDisc player/recorder records on 1GB Hi-MD discs (*est. $7), which can hold up to 45 hours of compressed music and can be rerecorded thousands of times. The SonicStage software required for player-to-PC transfers has its quirks, but is said to be improved over earlier versions, and Mac-compatible software is now available as well. Furthermore, Sony has removed most restrictions on uploading of recordings, so you can use this model to transfer content of older MiniDiscs to a computer.
•  Sony MDS-JE480
   (*est. $135)

>> Where to buy

MiniDisc player/recorder.

While a portable MiniDisc recorder is great for recording live events such as concerts, the Sony MDS-JE480 is a stay-at-home solution for DJs looking to create custom recordings or party mixes, or for enthusiasts looking for a high-quality component to play back MiniDiscs on their audio system. For music professionals, analog line-level audio and digital optical inputs are available to accept signals from a variety of sources. Reviews say editing features are excellent, allowing users to record, erase, move and combine tracks almost at will. An analog line-level output and attractive styling lets the Sony MDS-JE480 integrate easily into a home audio system. Although there have been no professional reviews of the Sony MDS-JE480, user comments on the Internet have been largely positive. (compare prices)

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated January 2007

MiniDisc players have been eclipsed by portable MP3 players. MP3 players like the iPod have several advantages. Because they integrate closely with the music collection on your computer, it's easy to reload and refresh an MP3 player's music collection. You can drag and drop files, which record quickly onto the player. See our separate report on MP3 players for more details.

Sony is the only company still making MiniDisc players and recorders for the U.S. market, though they remain popular in Europe and Asia. Even though MP3 players have taken over, MiniDisc player/recorders still make sense for certain situations, and if you're the sort who likes to buck a trend, they are a less expensive way to manage a large music collection. The most compelling advantage of portable MiniDisc recorders, however, is their ability to make high-quality live recordings of music, interviews and lectures. With the best MiniDisc player/recorders, you can then upload those recordings to a PC.

Because of how far the market has contracted, professional MiniDisc reviews are few and far between. We did find one very detailed and comprehensive review of the Sony MZ-RH1 (*est. $335) at MDCenter.nl, which is an enthusiast site based in the Netherlands. MiniDisc.org is another enthusiast site that's loaded with user-generated reviews and opinions, along with lots of general information and more. There's also a lively online community of MiniDisc aficionados found in Google Groups' alt.audio.MiniDisc forum. User reviews written by owners on Epinions and Amazon.com are also valuable, and sometimes quite insightful. Don't overlook reviews of older equipment, as some discontinued models are still available from a few retailers as well as on eBay.

1 Sony MDS-JE480 (*est. $135) -

There is just one current portable MiniDisc model and one home MiniDisc deck sold in the U.S., although there is broader availability elsewhere in the world. Because of that, no professional reviewers are covering the MiniDisc market. We did find a detailed review of the Sony MZ-RH1 at a MiniDisc enthusiast site based in the Netherlands, and good user comments on that model and the MDS-JE480, which is a home MiniDisc deck, at user forums and user review sites. Several discontinued MiniDisc players and recorders also have received some positive user feedback. If you are interested in discontinued MiniDisc models, the best place to look would be eBay. A few -- mostly players with no live recording capability -- are also still available from some retailers.
