This page is part of a larger ConsumerSearch report on Plasma TV which includes more reviews, analysis and a summary of the top-rated models.

What the reviewers like:
According to reviewers, the 42-inch Pioneer PDP-4270HD plasma TV delivers great image quality. There are enough inputs and outputs -- including two HDMI inputs and one PC input -- to handle almost any home-theater situation. While the TV can't display 1080p signals (the panel's native resolution is 1,024 x 768 pixels), the HDMI inputs can accept 1080p/24 frame-per-second (fps) signals from Blu-Ray or HD-DVD DVD players. Most reviewers conclude that the Pioneer PDP4270HD's Advanced Pure Cinema mode does an excellent job when playing DVD movies.

What the reviewers don't like:
Although reviewers have few complaints about the Pioneer PDP-4270HD, it is expensive relative to the competition in this size range. Black level, while better than most plasma TVs, falls short of the very best available. The PDP-4270HD has a native resolution of 1024 x 768. Therefore, like all 42-inch plasma sets, it is incapable of displaying HD signals at full resolution. These are minor concerns in most reviews, which highlight the Pioneer PDP-4270HD as one of the best plasma HDTVs overall.

Pioneer PDP-4270HD review highlights

The 42-inch Pioneer PDP-4270HD is considered to be one of the best 42-inch plasma TVs in reviews, which say it has terrific picture quality, including great shadow detail, accurate color decoding and very good video processing. Black levels are reported to be better than those of most plasma TVs, but are just shy of the very best available. This Pioneer plasma TV is also feature-packed, but it's more expensive than the competition in this price range. For example, the less expensive 42-inch Vizio VP42 (*est. $1,000) plasma TV has good features, yet reviewers say that its picture quality, while still considered good, doesn't match that of the pricier Pioneer plasma TV.

We found several detailed reviews of the 42-inch Pioneer PDP-4270HD plasma HDTV, the best of which has been published by The Perfect Vision. This publication's reviews are long and detailed, and the magazine makes recommendations as to which TVs are the best performers. Consumer Reports covers the Pioneer PDP-4271HD (essentially identical to the PDP4270HD, but sold only at Best Buy stores). The article meets Consumer Reports' usual standards, but the discussion about individual sets is very short -- just a few lines about each. The review of the Pioneer PDP-4270HD at Plasma TV Buying Guide.com lacks some of the professionalism of other sites, but its report is very detailed. User reviews at Amazon.com and AVSForum.com are helpful in assessing overall owner satisfaction.

Pioneer Plasma TV Review PDP-4270HD 42" Flat Panel Plasma TV

Aug. 2006

While not as professional in tone and organization as some other review sources, the reviews at Plasma TV Buying Guide.com seem to be fair and detailed. The Pioneer PDP-4270HD is complimented in this easy-to-read review. Because many plasma TVs get high scores here, it's harder to tell which might be the very best overall.
