Insignia NS-30HTV Review

What the reviewers like:
The Insignia NS-30HTV is among the least expensive HDTVs available, costing less than even smaller-screen LCD models. Picture quality falls short of more expensive options, but still is substantially better to most people than standard definition. The Insignia NS-30HTV’s video processing is smooth, and it does a good job removing artifacts such as jagged lines. The menu system is easy to use, according to reviews.

What the reviewers don't like:
Reviewers say the image quality of the Insignia NS-30HDTV falls short compared to other HDTVs. Color accuracy via the TV’s component inputs is off. The image is much softer than other HDTVs, and black levels are said to be uneven. The lack of an HDMI input means that the TV is unable to accept a signal from a high-definition DVD player at its full resolution.

Insignia NS-30HTV review highlights

It pays to be cautious when buying inexpensive TVs. A current review reports that while the 30-inch Insignia NS-30HTV is a relative bargain, its performance makes it an unattractive choice. Complaints include a generally soft picture and poor color accuracy. Also, there is no HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) input, which is a must for signal sources such as high-definition DVD players. User comments, though not plentiful, have largely been uncomplimentary as well. However, another review gives the Insignia NS-30HTV a more favorable rating for its relatively good HD picture quality.

As consumer interest in CRT (cathode ray tube) TVs declines, fewer and fewer professional reviewers are evaluating these sets. One exception is Consumer Reports, which tested 20 CRT TVs -- including the Insignia NS-30HTV, a widescreen 30-inch direct-view HDTV -- in its latest update. The Insignia NS-30HTV is also the subject of a lengthier review at CNet.com. Because the Insignia NS-30HTV is available from only one store (Best Buy), we saw relatively little user feedback on it. However, there are a handful of user comments at CNet.com and some limited discussion at AVSForum.com.

Consumer Reports continues to report on CRT televisions and is currently the best source for reviews. The latest update includes ratings on eight high-definition sets and 12 standard-definition models, including the Insignia NS-30HTV. Along with general buying advice, there is a ratings chart.

CNet.com's electronics editors only occasionally review direct-view television sets, and the only current model on the site is the Insignia NS-30HTV HDTV. In addition to the formal reviews, users have the opportunity to post their own reviews.
