Consumer Reports is one of the few reviewers that still tests standard televisions. The latest update evaluates eight high-definition sets and 12 standard-definition TVs. Along with general buying advice, there is a ratings chart. While the discussions about individual TVs are disappointingly short and many of the listed TVs are now discontinued, this is currently the best review source for CRT televisions.

Direct-View Tube TVs

It has been a long time since CNet.com last looked at direct-view TVs, but the last set reviewed -- the widescreen Insignia NS-30HTV HDTV, which is only available at Best Buy stores -- remains available. Unfortunately, the TV was rated only "mediocre" due to its "problematic" picture quality, although the reviewer concedes that it is inexpensive and is a noticeable improvement over standard-definition sets.

While discussions can sometimes go off track, this user-to-user discussion site provides lots of information about everything and anything related to home entertainment, including a forum dedicated to direct-view TVs. Sets from popular manufacturers often get their own "official" thread that includes discussions of specifications, features, problems, fixes and more, including reviews. Some of the threads span hundreds of posts -- or even more than 1,000 -- so be prepared to spend a little time when investigating a particular TV set. The site also features industry news, press releases and more.

CRT (Tube) TVs Reviews and Prices

In the past, it was hard to take Consumer Guide's opinions too seriously, as most seemed to be based on manufacturer-supplied information and nearly every set reviewed was highly rated. That has changed for the better following the site's partnership with HowStuffWorks.com. Reviews now seem more objective, but are short and still rely too heavily on manufacturer-supplied information. Little formal testing seems to be done, but at least now someone is looking at the reviewed sets with a critical eye. Finally, lots of discontinued models remain on the site, making navigation tedious.

The Internet version of this national brick-and-mortar retailer, CircuitCity.com allows users to share their experiences about products they own. Most of the sets listed receive enough comments to make visiting the site useful if you want to garner real-world opinions of how various sets work after they get home. Of course, like most nonprofessional reviews, the quality and usefulness of the reports can vary quite a bit. On the plus side, the listing is easy to navigate and it can be sorted by many criteria, including highest rating. An overall rating is shown on the search page, and users can then go to the individual model page to read individual reviews.

Like CircuitCity.com, Amazon.com invites owners to share their experiences with potential buyers. Again, many of the TVs offered get enough user ratings to help visitors get a handle on which ones most buyers consider best. While many more sets are listed than on CircuitCity.com, that number includes numerous discontinued models, making navigation tedious. Still, if you have a good idea of what sets you are interested in, the user information is often helpful and sometimes even surprisingly detailed.

Epinions offers the same advantages and drawbacks as the owner-written commentary found at Amazon.com, CircuitCity.com and similar sites. However, most models, especially current models, don't get nearly as many reviews, making this a far less useful resource. Still, Epinions is worth a visit, as the reviews that are posted tend to be more in-depth than those at the retailer sites.

Like Epinions, there are far fewer reviews at Sears.com than at either Amazon.com or CircuitCity.com. In addition, most reviews are simple ratings in areas such as image quality, audio quality, performance and features, with comments -- if present at all -- generally brief. Navigation is a bit of a nuisance, as standard TVs can be found in several categories. However, this site does include user feedback on some direct-view TVs that can't be found elsewhere.
