Samsung SlimFit TX-S2782H Review(*est. $460)You are here: Electronics >> Televisions >> Samsung SlimFit TX-S2782HThis page is part of a larger ConsumerSearch report on Televisions which includes more reviews, analysis and a summary of the top-rated models.
What the reviewers like:
The slim form factor of Samsung SlimFit TVs has won over consumers, who have made this line the top seller among tube-type HDTVs. At 16.5 inches deep, the Samsung TX-S2782H isn’t that much deeper than a stand-mounted LCD flat-panel television, and the SlimFit line outperforms LCD technology in some important ways. These include the ability to produce inky, realistic blacks, and faster response times (with no blurring) when playing games or watching fast-motion video. The Samsung TX-S2782H is also rich in features, with two HDMI connections, Digital Dynamic SRS TruSurround (which creates the illusion of surround sound using just two speakers), reverse 3:2 pull down, and more. What the reviewers don't like: While Samsung SlimFit TVs remain popular with CRT TV buyers, we have seen persistent user reports of geometry issues -- particularly picture bowing (straight lines that bend slightly toward the edges of the screen). Reviewers and owners say the Samsung TX-S2782H fares better in this regard, but is not immune to the problem. We’ve also seen a handful of comments about screen discoloration. The remote control is called 'awkward' by some, and there have been a few complaints about slow channel surfing. Samsung SlimFit TX-S2782H review highlights For many reviewers, Samsung SlimFit TVs such as the TX-S2782H represent the best of both worlds -- the picture quality of a CRT in a cabinet that’s 30 percent thinner than competing sets. That’s why Samsung SlimFit TVs have quickly become the top choice of consumers, with a 46.1 percent market share of direct-view TVs (according to The NPD Group’s retail tracking service). Reviewers say that the 27-inch Samsung TX-S2782H -- a 4:3 (non-widescreen) HDTV -- is among the better models in the series. However, while the Samsung HDTV's picture quality is good, reviewers and owners say it’s a step below that of Sony’s much larger (34-inch) -- and much more expensive -- KD-34XBR970 (*est. $860). In addition, we’ve seen numerous user comments about the inconsistent screen geometry of SlimFit TVs, although the TX-S2782H seems to fare somewhat better in that regard. As consumer interest in CRT (cathode-ray tube) TVs declines, fewer and fewer professional reviewers are evaluating these sets. However, CRTs remain a popular choice with consumers, as evidenced by the well over 100 user comments we found for the Samsung TX-S2782H HDTV at CNet.com, Circuit City.com and Amazon.com. The Samsung TX-S2782H is part of Samsung’s SlimFit line, which features cabinets that are substantially thinner than other CRT TVs of the same screen size.
