Top Rated What the Research Says

15-inch LCD TV with DVD player.

Reviews say the space-saving Toshiba 15DLV77 TV-DVD combo works well in a kitchen or dorm room. It is not an HDTV and it doesn't have a widescreen, but that's not a major concern in such a small screen size. It includes a QAM-compatible digital tuner, so it won't become obsolete when analog broadcasting ends next year. However, there's no HDMI input. User reviews say that the Toshiba LCD TV with DVD combo is easy to use, with a good quality picture and low price. (compare prices)
•  Sharp LC-19DV22U
   (*est. $430)

19-inch HDTV TV-DVD combo.

A 19-inch screen is ideal for bedroom viewing, and user feedback says that this Sharp TV-DVD combo is the best in this size. Unlike the Toshiba 15-inch TV-LCD combo above, the LC-19DV22U is a widescreen HDTV model with a native resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. The built-in DVD player is progressive-scan, but it can't upscale DVDs to HD resolution. While reviews are generally good, we did see some complaints that the Sharp TV-DVD combo is very slow when changing channels.
•  RCA L26WD26D
   (*est. $520)

26-inch HDTV-DVD combo.

The 26-inch RCA L26WD26D gets plenty of feedback and good user ratings. Its best feature is its value, and most reports say that this RCA TV-DVD combo delivers great bang for the buck. Users seem pleased with the picture quality, but the sound quality isn't the best. Connectivity is sparse, and there's just one HDMI input. The 32-inch RCA L32WD26D (*est. $685) is similar, but adds an additional HDMI input. (compare prices)
•  Toshiba REGZA 32LV67U
   (*est. $760)

>> Where to buy

32-inch HDTV-DVD player combo.

Though its price competes with that of other 32-inch LCD HDTVs, the Toshiba 32LV67U includes an integrated upconverting DVD player that can scale standard-definition DVDs to near HD quality. Connectivity is good for a TV-DVD combo, and includes three HDMI inputs and a digital (optical) audio output. Other features include Toshiba's CineSpeed LCD panel, which has a fast response time that's ideal for watching high-action images. StableSound, which evens out volume levels between different types of programming, is another plus. (compare prices)

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated March 2008

While consumers seem to like TV-DVD combos for their simplicity and convenience, professional reviewers are less interested. Instead, the best guidance comes from user reviews such as those from Amazon.com, where user-written reports are lengthy and informative. The site has become easier than ever to use. Other retailer sites, such as CircuitCity.com, BestBuy.com and WalMart.com, sell fewer models but have enough user ratings to be helpful. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Epinions. Few TV-DVD combos listed there get any feedback, and using the site is an exercise in frustration.

TV-DVD combos can be found in sizes from under 10 inches up to 40 inches, and with standard-definition, enhanced-definition and high-definition displays. Most current TV-DVD combos are built around LCD displays. You'll also find a smattering of CRT (cathode ray tube)-based combo units, but those are disappearing fast as LCD TV-DVD combos become less expensive.

Since March 1, 2007, manufacturers have been required to include a digital (ATSC) tuner in all TVs regardless of size, including TV-DVD combos. The goal of the tuner requirement, which was mandated by the FCC and Congress, is to aid in the transition to an all-digital broadcasting system, which will take place in February 2009. After that date, all standard (analog) broadcasting will end.

Because of that requirement, all current TV-DVD combos include a digital tuner. However, since stores are allowed to sell products with analog tuners until they are out of stock, you might still find some older TV-DVD combos on retailers' shelves. Though older TV-DVD combos without digital tuners could be bargain priced, they are not a good choice if you get any of your TV from over-the-air broadcasting. While you could continue to watch TV broadcasts after February 2009 by adding an external tuner, that adds to the clutter and makes for a more complex setup -- two things that many buyers of TV-DVD combos are looking to avoid. On the other hand, the tuner issue is of little or no concern if you get all of your TV from cable or satellite, as they use a different scheme to distribute programming and are not affected by these changes.

If space isn't of the utmost concern, most experts say that you are better off buying a separate DVD player and television than a TV-DVD player combo. Standalone DVD players tend to be more full-featured than those included in combos and perform somewhat better -- and if they break, they are more easily repaired or replaced than a TV-DVD combo. Likewise, the TVs themselves have fewer features. HDTV models typically can only display images in the lower 720p HD resolution. User reviews provide the best current insight as to which TV-DVD combos are the best options. Among those, the 32-inch Toshiba REGZA 32LV67U stands out as a top performer. Its impressive feature lineup includes an upconverting DVD player and great connectivity. The Sharp LC-19DV22U is the best choice among 19-inch TV-DVD combos, but slow channel-changing is a sore spot with some. If you need an even smaller TV-DVD combo for a kitchen or dorm room, the 15-inch Toshiba 15DL7V77 is an easy pick. Most budget TV-DVD combos get lackluster owner reviews, but the 26-inch RCA L26WD26D and 32-inch L26WD26D stand out above the crowd.
