1.  CNet.com Headphone ratings

Editors of CNet.com

As of Sept. 2007
reviews rating CNet editors review headphones as they hit the market, but editors don't organize big roundups very often. However, in each review testers make comparisons to other headphones. Editors had just deemed the Sony MDR-DS4000 as best when they tested the Pioneer SE-DIR800C, which outperformed the Sony. The Pioneer wireless headphones get better reception than any other cordless headphone except the Sony, but the Pioneer has better bass and excellent Dolby surround sound playback. The Sennheiser RS 130 and RS 120 sound good and are recommended for home-theater use. CNet likes the sound from the Etymotic ety8 wireless earphones, but editors don't care for their style.
2.  GoodGearGuide.com Wireless headphones

Staff of GoodGearGuide.com.au

As of Sept. 2007
reviews rating The headphones tested at this Australian review site are not all available in the United States. One Philips wireless headphone (not available in the U.S.) gets only one star from editors, who say they "cannot in good faith recommend them to anyone other than department store mannequins or stone statues." For the most part this site does not exhibit the frequent audiophile disdain for wireless headphones, judging them on their own merit and allowing that the Sennheiser RS 130s "offer outstanding bass response and are extremely comfortable to wear for long periods of time."

3.  The Sunday Times (U.K.) Test bench: wireless headphones

David Price

Sept. 2, 2007
reviews rating David Price, editor of the British magazine Hi-Fi World, rates six wireless headphones as being best for six different uses, comparing each against the sound quality of the $40 Sennheiser PX 100, which is the consensus lightweight choice in ConsumerSearch.com's report on corded headphones. According to Price, "None of the cordless headphones on test matched the modest PX 100s for clarity, power or depth." Not even Sennheiser's own wireless RS 130, which earned the highest rating from Price among cordless sets, could beat the wired headphones.
4.  OnHeadphones.com Wireless headphones

Editors of OnHeadphones.com

As of Sept. 2007
reviews rating The top-rated review site for corded headphones has been reviewing headphones only since February 2007 and has reviewed only three cordless headphones as of this writing. We hope to soon see more reviews, but the reviews that are here are filled with analysis and blunt commentary. Editors award a four-star rating (out of five) to Sony RF wireless headphones, calling them good for everything but gaming and "so soft; you could wear them all day." On the other hand, the site gives two stars to the Motorola HT820, saying they "begin to hurt after 30 minutes."
5.  PC Magazine Wireless Headphone Reviews

Editors of PC Magazine

As of Dec. 2006
reviews rating PC Magazine has improved its wireless headphone coverage. None of the eight cordless headphones covered here earn an "Editor's Choice" rating, but three of them receive ratings of four on the five-point scale: the IOGEAR Wireless Stereo Headphone kit, the Logitech for iPods and the Logitech for MP3. The most recent reviews are from December 2006, however.
6.  Playlist magazine Headphone Ratings

Dan Frakes and Matt Vance

As of Sept. 2007
reviews rating Playlist is an online magazine for digital-music lovers. Like CNet.com, it reviews headphones of all styles in a comprehensive fashion throughout the year. On a single page, it keeps a running list of headphones ratings, with links to full reviews. Dan Frakes writes most of the reviews. Unfortunately, one of its recommended products, the Ten Technology NaviPro, is now discontinued. Editors also like the Logitech wireless for iPods.
7.  Consumer Reports Headphones: Buying advice

Editors of Consumer Reports

Dec. 2006
reviews rating Consumer Reports rates only three cordless headphones in this report, but its ratings are independent and credible. It recommends that, because interference can vary from home to home, buy cordless headphones only from a vendor with a good return policy.

8.  The New York Times Grooving and Chatting All in One

David Pogue

July 6, 2006
reviews rating Pogue reviews the Motorola HT820, Plantronics Pulsar 590A, the Jabra BT620s and the Oakley O Rokr sunglasses. All are Bluetooth headphones "that bring both cellphone calls and iPod tunes to your ears." Pogue says all the models, "work beautifully," and that the choice is yours. The Jabra are comfortable and sound excellent, while the Plantronics offer even more comfort. The Oakley shades, "are very cool, and they sound awesome." He's a little less keen on the Motorola HT820, citing its lower-quality sound and tricky Bluetooth pairing.
9.  Business Week The Headphone Bazaar

Jay Greene

Feb. 5, 2007
reviews rating This roundup of cordless headphones covers models suitable for the gym. Like many reviews, this one comes down in favor of the Etymotic ety8 earphones, despite the "goofy" appearance. Greene reports that, "The sound quality is much better than you might expect from a wireless headset. And the ety8s fit great as well, coming with a variety of eartips."
10.  HeadRoom Wireless headphones

Editors of HeadRoom

Not Dated
reviews rating Headphone.com sells headphones, but in its HeadRoom section, editors give highly credible reviews based on scientific testing for corded headphones. Clearly, the audiophiles here despise cordless headphones, saying, "Most wireless headphones we've heard are basically terrible-sounding, poorly designed plasti-crud with enough background static to deafen punk rock noise-core fans!" They allow that Sennheiser has some "respectable offerings" and seven of the eight wireless products reviewed are Sennheiser headphones, although three of them are spares with no base. The other cordless product listed is the AKG Hearo, meant for home theater use and listed at $1.199, but available elsewhere for as low as $499.

11.  Amazon.com Wireless Headphones

Contributors to Amazon.com

As of Sept. 2007
reviews rating Amazon.com is useful when you have already narrowed your choice – similar to calling references when hiring someone. The comments can be subjective, and sometimes not very relevant to performance. All in all, while user reviews of headphones are good for ascertaining comfort, expert comparative reviews are better for judging sound quality.
12.  Consumer Guide.com Headphones

Editors of ConsumerGuide.com

As of Sept. 2007
reviews rating Twenty headphones, both corded and wireless, receive ratings at Consumer Guide. Although models receive a grade for performance, there is no explanation of the ratings and editors do not disclose any particular test methodology. The Pioneer SE-DIR800C wireless headphones receive a positive review but the review doesn't compare them to any other models or brands.
13.  Epinions Wireless Headphones

Contributors to Epinions

As of Sept. 2007
reviews rating There aren't nearly as many owner-written ratings for wireless headphones at Epinions as there are at Amazon.com, so this site isn't as helpful. If you sort by rating, the first page will have products that have very few reviews, some only one. The Sennheiser RS 130, highly rated by professional reviewers, gets mostly negative comments here, for example.
