1.  Consumer Reports Infant Car Seats

Editors of Consumer Reports

Oct. 2007 (Updated June 2008)
reviews rating Consumer Reports, the only U.S. non-government organization to perform independent crash testing for car seats, has included 11 of the most popular infant car seats in its latest report. All models pass the crash tests, so editors rank them according to how well they perform in lab tests for ease of use and fit to vehicle.

2.  Baby Bargains Infant Car Seats

Denise and Alan Fields

7th Edition, Apr. 2007
reviews rating With an emphasis on value, safety and durability, this book provides useful shopping tips and recommendations on dozens of baby products. The authors use hands-on testing and interviews with parents, manufacturers and retailers to rate products. Write-ups are very thorough, including data regarding manufacturers' recall history. No crash tests are conducted, but information on ease of use, manufacturer reliability and child comfort is very helpful.

3.  National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Child Safety Seat Ease of Use Ratings

Editors of NHTSA

As of July 2008
reviews rating The NHTSA tests child car seats only for ease of use (including evaluation of labels, evaluation of instructions, installation features, and securing the child) and assigns a rating for individual categories and overall ease of use.
4.  CarSeatData.Org Infant Car Seats

Toby McAdams and Bradley Sorock

As of July 2008
reviews rating CarSeatData.org has a great compatibility database for which car seats fit best into which cars. However, there is also a nice report on the various kinds of car seats and recommendations from site founder Toby McAdams, a long-time car seat reviewer. CarSeatData.org is now run by Bradley Sorock, who took over from Toby McAdams in fall 2006 and who plans to continue to update the resource. In terms of infant car seats, the honors are given to two seats, the Graco SnugRide and the Baby Trend LatchLoc. Both seats are praised for having five-point harnesses and for being very adjustable. However, both recommended seats are older versions.
5.  Viewpoints.com Infant Car Seats

Contributors to Viewpoints.com

As of July 2008
reviews rating This website allows visitors to post reviews, and encourages contributors to identify themselves as "looking for value" or "busy mom," among other traits. About a dozen car seats are listed here, and some get as many as 100 reviews. While average ratings are listed, the ratings are so similar overall that it's hard to tell at a glance which might be better. Reading into the reviews themselves is interesting once you've narrowed your choice. Among infant seats, the Chicco KeyFit and Graco SnugRide are highest rated.
6.  Target.com Infant Car Seats

Contributors to Target.com

As of July 2008
reviews rating Target is becoming an increasingly good source for parent-written reviews on car seats and other products. Many car seats receive over a dozen comments; the Graco SnugRide gets almost 50 five-star owner reviews. We also found more than 60 reviews for the Baby Trend Flex-Loc. Owners generally like this seat, although some found it heavy and hard to adjust. The most common complaint about all car seats is that they sometimes don't fit well in a given car.
7.  BabyCenter.com Car Seat Reviews

Contributors to BabyCenter.com

As of July 2008
reviews rating Most seats get between one and ten comments at BabyCenter.com, enough to be somewhat helpful. Most like the Graco SnugRide, and it earns a "Parent's Pick." One parent says the handle buttons on The Primo Viaggio SIP are hard to adjust. The Graco SafeSeat (Step 1) also earns a Parent's Pick.

8.  About.com Top 4 Infant Car Seats

Robin Elise Weiss

Not Dated
reviews rating About.com Guide to Pregnancy Robin Elise Weiss says the best car seat is the Graco SnugRide. However, it's not clear if these car seats were evaluated in person. Rather, Weiss says they are "top picks from experts." However, an accompanying buyer's guide is helpful. (Note that ConsumerSearch and About.com are owned by the same parent company, but are not affiliated editorially.)
9.  About.com Top 6 Infant Car Seats

Heather Corley

Not Dated
reviews rating About.com Guide to Baby Products Heather Corley says these six car seat picks are based on her experiences as a child passenger safety technician. She finds these easy to install, durable over time and easy to adjust. She likes the Britax Companion because of its added side protection and thicker harness straps that don't twist and tangle. (Note that ConsumerSearch and About.com are owned by the same parent company, but are not affiliated editorially.)
10.  Amazon.com Infant Car Seats

Contributors to Amazon.com

As of July 2008
reviews rating Amazon.com is another site where users can buy items and post their impressions of items as well. Although a few car seats receive many reviews, most have only about two comments. Parents posting at Amazon.com like the Graco SnugRide for a number of reasons, specifically the weight and the simple nature of the seat compared to competitors. The Chicco KeyFit also gets several favorable reviews based on its comfort and ease of use.
11.  Which.co.uk Child Car Seats

Editors of Which.co.uk

May 29, 2008
reviews rating Which? is a British consumer advocacy magazine similar to Consumer Reports in the U.S. It posts news, gives product information, conducts testing and makes recommendations. Which? has an excellent comparative review of car seats with ratings based on crash test results. Because this site is based in the U.K., none of the tested car seats are available in the U.S., but Which? is great for European parents.
12.  Mumsnet.com Car Seats from Birth

Editors of Mumsnet.com

As of July 2008
reviews rating Mumsnet.com is a U.K.-based site with helpful information about car seats. European car seats have different features than U.S. car seats. If you're a European consumer, this is the place to look; if not, the site still has a lot of useful safety information that you may find helpful.

Editors of ConsumerGuide.com

As of July 2008
reviews rating Consumer Guide chooses the Graco SnugRide, Britax Companion, Chicco KeyFit 30, Peg Perego Primo Viaggio, Baby Trend Flex Loc and Graco Infant SafeSeat (Step 1) as their picks for the best infant car seats. Unfortunately, it's not evident why. There are no specifics in this review to suggest that any of these car seats were tested in any way.
14.  CarSeatSite.com Recommended Car Seats

Editor of CarSeatSite.com

As of July 2008
reviews rating Whoever runs this site claims to be a "National Safe Kids certified child passenger safety technician and instructor." Four different infant seats are recommended and given short reviews including features as well as drawbacks. These recommendations are based on what this person finds are the most commonly recommended seats by parents and caregivers.
