Though you won’t find the carefully structured testing of Consumer Reports at this site, you will probably find the most varied and largest number of consumer reviews in all "baby wearing" categories. The biggest drawback -- as with any consumer-written review site -- is that the quality of the feedback is pretty variable. Still, lots of baby carriers get reviews -- sometimes upwards of 100 -- so it's easy to pick out which ones are hits and which ones are misses. The site also has a user forum where parents can ask questions and get advice on choosing or using a baby carrier, though free registration is required.

Adventures of a Sling Momma: Seven Baby Carriers Reviewed
Jackie Davidson
Not Dated
|
|
Freelance writer and mother of a five-month-old baby, Jackie Davidson writes of her experience with seven baby carriers: Baby Bjorn, Sling-Eezee, Maya Wrap, Maya Pouch, Over the Shoulder Baby Holder and Rosado Sling. Davidson recommends slings over other baby carriers. Her favorite of the seven she tried is the New Native Baby Carrier. This is an absolutely excellent personal review and a must-read for anybody considering a sling. Still, it’s important to consider these are the opinions of one person who carefully tested the items and not a specific series of tests administered by a group of product experts.

This short article is more of a buyer's guide than a review, with a few bulleted points and a short list of products. No testing is referenced, and products aren't compared or really recommended. The Snugli Cross Country is adjustable for parents of differing heights. The Infantino BackPack Carrier is inexpensive. The Kelty Tour is lightweight, and the Deuter Kangakid looks like a real backpack.

This short article covers several soft carriers, though the products are not compared. The Infantino GoGo Rider is good for short trips. The Evenflo Snugli is touted mainly because it features Nicole Miller fabric. The BabyBjorn Active has added back support for the parent. The Red Envelope Baby Sling is simple and handy for nursing. The JJ Cole Premaxx New Addition can be used as a sling, but baby can also sit upright. The carriers aren't rated or ranked, but pictures give you a good idea of how each carrier works, and a list of features are discussed.

BabyCenter.com is an online resource for parents. Forums, articles and an online baby store fill the pages of this site. Parents are allowed to rank and review products, including baby carriers, with top-scoring carriers named "Parent's Picks." The BabyBjorn Original is one of the 5-star favorites. Other favorite baby carriers include the Slingeeze Baby Sling and Ergo Baby Carrier. There are several excellent articles that go into details about specific products, such as "Why use a baby backpack?" by Nancy Showen, M.D.

Amazon.com allows owners to rank and review a wide variety products, including baby carriers. However, only those carriers sold by Amazon.com are reviewed. On the plus side, navigation is easy now that Amazon.com has added the number of reviews a product has received on the main landing page. Also useful is a box with the most helpful (as voted on by users) positive review and the most helpful critical review. Many of the products have amassed a large number of reviews, which are mainly good and thorough, peppered by some comments about back pain and durability.

The Maya Wrap Baby Sling, BabyBjorn Original, New Native Baby Carrier and Tickle Turdle Knit Tube Slings each receive good reviews. Disadvantages are listed at the end of each review. Editors say the Maya Wrap has a learning curve, but they praise this sling overall. The Tickle Turdle is comfortable, but different-sized parents can't share a carrier. The BabyBjorn is said to be the best soft carrier, but it can be a little bulky. The New Native Baby Carrier is useful for breastfeeding, but the baby sits lower in this sling, and the size is not adjustable. This site has a wonderful article called "Getting Back to Basics with Babywearing" by Patricia Newton, which gives a nice perspective on the advantages of baby wearing. We'd rate this site higher if it appeared to be updated more recently.

Baby Carrier/Sling Reviews
Carrie Lauth, Stacie Mahoe
Not Dated
|
|
This site touts itself as a product research guide for parents looking for baby gear information. Three sling baby carriers are reviewed here -- the Moby Wrap, Monkey Bums Baby Sling and the Maya Wrap. The Maya Wrap edges out the other two with a 10/10 score. The author of that review even claims to have worn two previous Maya Wraps so much that they’re now threadbare.

Travelling with Children: Baby Carriers
Editors of Which.co.uk

Though this U.K. site sometimes recommends brands or models not widely available in the United States, the thoughtful discussion of features found in soft carriers, multi-way carriers and framed backpack carriers is certainly helpful to the consumer. This article also breaks down the pros and cons for each type of carrier, and a list of buying tips is supplied. While this information is excellent, we still found the article incomplete overall. No testing was done on any particular brands of baby carriers, and no specific recommendations are given.

This retailer site also lets customers review baby carriers. We rate it behind some other user review sites because products -- even popular ones -- get fewer reviews. Navigation is also a little more difficult, since you need to drill down to individual product pages to see the number of reviews on which a star rating is based. Still, a visit might be worthwhile, because the site includes a comparison chart for front and back carriers detailing dimensions, weight capacity, adjustability, price and some features. A child carrier FAQ has some basic but useful information on the differences between carrier types and models, appropriate ages for carriers, benefits of carriers, general hints and suggestions.

Epinions is a consumer review site that allows owners to rank and rate products. Carriers are sorted by price and rating, and there are more products listed here than at Amazon.com. Unfortunately, there are not as many reviews for each carrier as at Amazon. The Nojo Original Baby Sling gets high ratings, reviewed by more than 190 owners. The BabyBjorn Active baby carrier receives good reviews as well -- though far fewer -- and most say that the carrier is expensive. Epinions allows you to search for carriers by price, brand name, harness type or carrier position. One negative is that many carriers have only a handful of reviews -- and some have none at all.

Baby Backpack Carriers
Editors at ConsumerGuide.com
As of Dec. 2007

|
Though Consumer Guide is improving as a source for reviews, its coverage still falls a little short. One improvement is that clear evidence of some limited testing can now be seen, as the most recent reviews detail testers' experiences in use -- including, in at least one case, a walk through a local museum. Still, relatively few carriers are reviewed, and several of the reviews are quite old. In addition, no comparisons are done, and no clear explanations are provided on how or why products receive the grades they do. That said, the Kelty Backpack Carrier is a “Best Buy,” and the Chicco Smart Support Backpack Carrier is the “Budget Buy.”

Lilaguide.com is part of the group of sites that includes TheKnot.com and TheNest.com. Designed to be an online resource guide for parents, Lilaguide features a clean, modern look, but navigation is tedious. There's also no way to know how many reviewers have contributed reports, which is important, as some products only get a handful of comments, while others garner lots of feedback. Moby Wrap gets good comments from most, although one user who describes herself as 5’1” makes the point that this wrap has too much fabric for her. BabyBjorn Original gets more than 200 reviews and maintains a high rating.

While you might expect a lot of reviews for baby carriers at a site like Target.com, the numbers are surprisingly low for this company’s online retail outlet. Comments here are also somewhat incomplete. Users often voice complaints, but the comments aren’t detailed enough to give information that’s genuinely informative for other shoppers. Even positive comments often are not very explicit, leaving the reader to wonder exactly what made the user like the product.
