1.  Baby Bargains Crib Brand Ratings

Denise and Alan Fields

Seventh Edition, 2007
reviews rating The excellent baby-gear book, Baby Bargains, includes a detailed section on cribs including comparative reviews and ratings of most popular brands. The authors don't conduct independent testing, but they do give their top brand recommendations based on product evaluation, user feedback and manufacturer history. Although a discussion of specific models would make this section of Baby Bargains even more helpful, the fact that it's up to date and comprehensive makes it our top-rated crib review.

2.  Consumer Reports Cribs: Basic is Best

Editors of Consumer Reports

Updated Nov. 2005
reviews rating Consumer Reports is a consumer advocacy organization that provides product information and category ratings based on independent testing. Although their newest report on cribs covers only general information and buying advice, an older version, also available to subscribers, does test and compare several crib models. While about half of the cribs covered are outdated, the ranking of current models is still useful.
3.  Choice.com.au Test: Cots

Editors of Choice Magazine

Aug. 2006
reviews rating Australia's Choice magazine is a non-profit consumer research and advocacy organization similar in mission to Consumer Reports. Choice rates cribs based on independent testing and ranks them according to features, usability and how well they meet safety guidelines. Although this is an excellent review, many of the models discussed aren't sold in the United States.

4.  Amazon.com Cribs

Contributors to Amazon.com

As of Jan. 2008
reviews rating Amazon.com is an online retailer that allows users to post reviews and ratings of the products it sells. Although posts pertain to individual models, Amazon's format, which includes the rating score and number of posts in list view, makes it easier for consumers to compare models without having to navigate to each one individually.
5.  About.com Top 10 Baby Cribs under $250

Heather Corley

Not Dated
reviews rating About.com is a network of topic sites led by expert or enthusiast guides. Heather Corley, the Guide to Baby Products, lists her top ten choices for cribs under $250. Although the ranking format is useful, cribs aren't really compared to each other and there's not much justification given for the choices. Ultimately we can't tell if these cribs were tested or even examined in person.
6.  About.com Top 10 Round Baby Cribs

Heather Corley

Not Dated
reviews rating Similar to the report on cribs under $250, this report lists Baby Products guide Heather Corley's top ten round crib choices. The ordered ratings are a useful starting point for parents considering a round crib, but models aren't compared to each other and there's no discussion of models that don't perform well. We can't tell whether or not Corley tested these cribs.

7.  Target.com Cribs

Contributors to Target.com

As of Jan. 2008
reviews rating Target sells general household goods, including a large selection of cribs. Users can post ratings of products they have experience with, and the most popular cribs have dozens of parent reviews. While user reviews don't involve formal testing or detailed comparison between cribs, they do allow consumers to gain an overall idea of the strengths and weaknesses of individual models.
8.  Babies 'R' Us Baby Cribs

Contributors to Babies 'R' Us

As of Jan. 2008
reviews rating Babies 'R' Us is a retailer specializing in baby products. They carry a good selection of cribs, many with several user reviews. Although there are no reviews for products not sold by Babies 'R' Us, the number of reviews creates a fairly balanced picture of a crib's popularity with parents.
9.  Baby Bargains Cribs & Nursery Furniture

Contributors to Baby Bargains Parent Product Reviews

As of Jan. 2008
reviews rating In addition to the print book, Baby Bargains has a website with product updates, additional material and parent reviews. One advantage of this site is that is covers a wide range of manufacturers including those that don't make their products available to online retailers. The downside is that few cribs have more than one or two short reviews.
10.  3Luxe.com Cribs

Editors of 3Luxe.com

As of Jan. 2008
reviews rating 3Luxe is a relatively new website devoted to editorial reviews. While 3Luxe says it rates products based on research and experience, there's not much in their crib ratings to indicate their process. Of the three models reviewed, only one is widely available.
11.  BabyCenter.com Cribs and Portable Beds

Contributors to BabyCenter.com

As of Jan. 2008
reviews rating Baby Center is a site where parents and caregivers can post reviews of baby products they own or have experience with. Reviews here are short, but several cribs are covered that don't get many reviews elsewhere.

12.  Consumer Guide.com Cribs

Editors of ConsumerGuide.com

As of Jan. 2008
reviews rating Consumer Guide does rate cribs, but only three models are given what editors call an "expert review." Cribs are rated on value, performance, features and use and then given an overall score out of five. Of the three models rated, none gets less than four out of five, and few negatives are discussed.
13.  Epinions Cribs and Bassinets

Contributors to Epinions

As of Jan. 2008
reviews rating Epinions is a site where users can post reviews of any crib model, giving the site an advantage over online retailers that allow users to review only the products sold through them. Reviews here tend to be detailed and comprehensive, but there are few reviews in the crib category and many are outdated.
