Baby Monitors
Denise Fields and Alan Fields
7th Edition, 2007
|
|
Consumer advocates Denise and Alan Fields personally test many of the products featured in this book, and parent interviews also factor into the ratings. The book includes shopping tips, reviews of selected manufacturers along with A, B, C and D ratings and a section of their own personal picks. At the end of the chapter is a chart of 19 monitors, which indicates features and prices. Baby Bargains is very informative and an excellent source for researching baby monitors.

Ratings: Baby Monitors
Editors of Consumer Reports
Apr. 2007
|
|
In this latest report, the editors at Consumer Reports provide a ratings chart comparing eleven audio monitors and three audio/video monitors. Testing includes scores for convenience, sensitivity, battery life and interference. Details are provided about testing methods and ratings are specific to each area of performance in the chart shown. Interestingly, editors say parents can consider skipping a baby monitor, especially if the nursery is near the master bedroom, or if a family lives in a small home or apartment.

Which? Magazine is a UK-based consumer magazine that's similar in credibility to Consumer Reports. They provide excellent and detailed information about the products they review. Unfortunately, none of their recommended monitors are widely available in the United States. However, they're a wonderful source of information for those looking for a baby monitor in Europe. Monitors from Tomy are generally rated higher than others.

Choice.com.au is Australia's answer to Consumer Reports. While this report is already several years old and recommends brands (such as Tomy) that are not widely available in the U.S., there is solid information here regarding monitor features, detailed testing information and handy tips for readers in Australia.

Amazon.com lets users write feedback for baby monitors, although not every baby monitor is listed here. These owner-written reviews are a terrific way to judge a baby monitor's performance in real life. Parents are vocal about reception, interference, battery life and overall satisfaction. We used the reviews here to supplement the professional testing we read at Consumer Reports and Baby Bargains.

This website has several child safety articles, including this one in which editors discuss the different types of baby monitors and offer safety tips. Two recommendations are included, both from Sony: 9-channel Baby Call Nursery Monitor or the 27-channel version of that monitor. Editors say these have the best reception and are water-resistant. We wish this information were dated, though it clearly predates the development of digital baby monitors, which limits its usefulness.

Like Amazon.com, Target.com provides a place for consumers to post their comments. Here the Summer Infant Handheld Color Video Monitor with 2.5" Screen and the Graco Ultra Clear II Monitor with Nightlight get oodles of positive comments. The Fisher-Price 2.4GHz Monitor gets predominantly poor reviews. Like Amazon.com, Target is becoming a good source for user reviews, though there aren't yet many comments for baby monitors here.

Babies ‘R' Us (part of Toys 'R' Us) is another online retailer that allows customers to post product reviews. The baby monitor section here isn't as extensive as at Amazon.com, but there are enough owner-written reviews to be helpful. For a few models, including the Angelcare Movement Sensor Deluxe, Babies ‘R' Us actually has the most extensive coverage of any user review site. Summer Infant's baby monitors also get good ratings from parents.

Walmart.com has a decent baby monitor section, covering a good range of brands including Angelcare, Summer Infant, Graco and MobiCam. Occasionally, ratings here are out of line with consensus on other user review sites; for instance the Summer Infant Baby's Quiet Sounds Video Monitor gets near-perfect scores from Walmart.com users, but only mediocre ratings elsewhere.

This feature article gives excellent, basic information about how a baby monitor functions, what features parents and other users might find helpful and what costs will be associated with different features. While this article provides a solid introduction to baby monitors, buyers will want to consult other reviews and manufacturer information for more detailed background on specific products.

Top 10 Baby Monitors
Heather Corley
Not Dated

|
While this article lists ten different baby monitors that are said to receive good reviews from those who use them, no links are provided to those reviews and no testing -- comparative or otherwise -- appears to have been conducted. The comments are entirely positive, and there's no explanation for why some of these models are more highly rated by Corley than others. The BebeSounds Voice-Activated Baby Monitor with Lights, the Evenflo Whisper Connect Tria and the Philips Baby Monitor with DECT Technology are discussed, among others. (Note that ConsumerSearch.com and About.com are owned by the same parent company, but are not affiliated editorially.)

Baby monitors are jumbled in this section along with other baby gear like breast pumps and security gates. The individual reviews are almost entirely positive, and while some reviews mention testing, we can't tell who the testers are or how the tests were controlled. Only three baby monitors are mentioned here, the Graco iMonitor digital, the BebeSounds Angelcare and the Philips DECT baby monitor. The only negatives noted relate to price.

Secure Baby is a website that sells safety equipment for new parents. While there are many places that perform the same service, few examine the features of each baby monitor in such detail. Specifications such as frequency channels, power input/output and dimensions are given to help parents make an informed decision. While this may not be a good place to begin shopping, it is a nice site when you've narrowed down your choices -- or if there's a specific feature that's extremely important to you.

Viewpoints is a new community site where members can post reviews of a variety of products, including baby monitors. So far, several models are included but most get only a handful of reviews. The exception is the Fisher-Price Sounds ‘n Lights, which gets an average rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars in over 50 owner-written reviews.

Sears.com allows customers to post reviews, but there aren't yet many for baby monitors. Because of the low reviewer volume, ratings here can be out of sync with those on top sites like Amazon.com or Target.com. Graco's Video iMonitor, for instance, does very well on Sears.com despite being panned elsewhere.

Top 6 Baby Monitors
Robin Elise Weiss
Not Dated
|
|
There are actually two lists of top baby monitors on the About.com website, but the two lists don't correspond at all. This list from the About.com's Guide to Pregnancy, Robin Elise Weiss, is clearly much older than the list from About.com's Guide to Baby Products. There is no indication that the monitors were tested by Weiss, and most of the monitors on this list have been discontinued.

The Lila Guide is part of a family of websites that include TheNest.com (for newlyweds) and TheKnot.com (for those getting married). This site is fairly short on reviews at the present time. However, the reviews that are posted are generally carefully written and provide real world observations made by users. This site could very well improve in the future.
