1.  Baby Bargains Baby Bargains

Denise Fields and Alan Fields

Seventh edition, 2007
reviews rating Baby Bargains is written by consumer advocates Denise and Alan Fields. In addition to their own research, they interviewed over 1,000 parents while compiling recommendations for their book. The Fields recommend trying a swing before buying, since not every child will enjoy it. They also urge shoppers to research the battery requirements of specific swing models first because, as they state, "swings eat batteries faster than toddlers can scarf M&Ms." Some owner comments can be found on the book's website, Windsorpeak.com.

2.  Consumer Reports Swings

Editors of Consumer Reports

Apr. 2005
reviews rating Consumer Reports neither tests nor rates baby swings. This article is more of a buyer's guide. Though several brands are mentioned, they aren't evaluated. There's some helpful information here, but you must be a subscriber to read it.
3.  American Baby American Baby Best of the Year Awards, 2007

Colleen Dowd and Jessica Hartshorn

Not Dated
reviews rating An overwhelming number of American Baby readers voted for a Fisher-Price brand swing, which was often chosen as one of their three favorite baby products overall. American Baby did not specify one standout model, but say parents generally liked that the Fisher-Price swings were easy to get babies into and out of, and that the toys actually engaged the babies. They preferred the cradle swings most. Editors say they received "thousands" of reader responses on baby gear, but we don't know how many commented specifically on swings.
4.  Amazon.com Swings

Contributors to Amazon.com

As of Nov. 2007
reviews rating Amazon.com allows consumers to rate and review products they own. Fisher-Price baby swings get the most attention overall. The Baby Papasan Cradle Swing and Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium Cradle Swing are the most popular, receiving 4.5 out of 5 stars from over 1,000 owner-reviewers. The Fisher-Price Aquarium Take-Along Swing and the Butterfly Garden Papasan Cradle Swing are also highly rated. Because of the large number of comments, Amazon.com is the best source for parent-written reviews.
5.  Epinions Swings

Contributors to Epinions

As of Nov. 2007
reviews rating Epinions is another consumer ratings site. Among the swings listed, rave reviews of currently available models include the Graco Open Top swings, and the Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Aquarium Cradle and Nature's Touch Baby Papasan Cradle swings. The price comparison on Epinions is a nice aspect of the site. Many of the swings are no longer in production, but are still listed with reviews. Quite a number of the swings only have a small selection of consumer reviews. We found better, more plentiful parent-written ratings at Amazon.com.
6.  BabyCenter.com Swings

Contributors to BabyCenter.com

As of Nov. 2007
reviews rating Babycenter.com, like Amazon.com, allows parents to rate and review products. Twelve swings are listed here, but only about half get ratings. The most comments by far and the top ratings are for the Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Cradle Swing, and the Nature's Touch Baby Papasan Cradle Swing also receives many comments and ties the Ocean Wonders swing in overall average rating.
7.  Target.com Baby Gear: Swings

Contributors to Target.com

As of Nov. 2007
reviews rating Target offers customers the opportunity to rate the products they buy, and Target stocks Evenflo swings, a brand Babies “R” Us does not carry. The Fisher-Price Baby Papasan, Rainforest Cradle, Smart Stages 3-in-1 and Power Plus all get good (or great) reviews from a wide range of readers. The inexpensive Fisher-Price Open-Top Take-Along Swing gets some low ratings for power. It's worth noting that we found complaints about every swing, even those that get higher ratings overall.
8.  Fit Pregnancy Reader's Choice 2006

Editors of Fit Pregnancy

Apr./May 2006
reviews rating In this short article, editors report on results of their annual parent survey on favorite baby gear. But instead of presenting a list of models, editors only report on which brands of gear are supposedly parent favorites. Graco and Fisher-Price swings are said to be highest rated, but no specific models are cited, and we don't know how many parents were surveyed. The 2007 Reader's Choice awards don't include any swings.
9.  Consumer Guide.com Baby Swings

Editors of ConsumerGuide.com

As of Oct. 2007
reviews rating Consumer Guide lists three swings on its site as recommended. It does appear that these models were tested in an informal way without a baby, and there are a few evaluative comments on noise level and some other performance features. Swings are not compared to each other, so we are not sure which might be better than others. The Fisher-Price Smart Stages 3-in-1 Rocker Swing, Fisher-Price Nature's Touch Baby Papasan Cradle Swing and Graco Silhouette Swing are listed at the top under "spotlight reviews," although it is not clear why these three swings are singled out above the rest.
10.  About.com Before you buy a baby swing

Heather Corley

Not Dated
reviews rating Heather Corley, About.com's guide to baby gear, primarily offers advice on choosing a baby swing, suggesting shoppers examine features such as a swing's safety, power source, speed and sounds, and recline capabilities. There is a list of three recommended baby swings, but little is said about the criteria for choosing these particular models.
11.  Best Baby Products.com Swings

Editors of BestBabyProducts.com

June 27, 2003
reviews rating Best Baby Products' editorial staff (all mothers) surveys the market, narrowing the selection by researching the products and speaking with parents. Highly rated are the Fisher-Price 3-in-1 Cradle/Swing, Swing 'n Meals High Chair & Swing (discontinued), Graco Open Top (3 Speed) (discontinued), and Graco Wind-Up Swing (discontinued.) Unfortunately, this report has not been updated in years, and all of its picks are outdated.
12.  Parents.com Shop With Parents: Rock Stars

Julie Knapp

Mar. 2006
reviews rating Parents magazine editor Julie Knapp reviews five products with good but scant insight. It's not obvious by what criteria she reviews the products, but she does include a good buyer's guide overview by Sandra Gordon, author of "Consumer Reports Best Baby Products." Eddie Bauer's wooden swing is listed here. This swing is mentioned on many sites without much explanation as to its value besides the fact that it is made of wood.
13.  The New Parents Guide.com Baby Swings

Editors of TheNewParentsGuide.com

Not Dated
reviews rating This site lists seven different swings, with no discernible standards about how products were reviewed. Editors just provide general commentary about the listed swings, which include numerous Fisher-Price and Graco models. This site serves as a helpful overview of some options, including a discontinued hand-crank model and a not-seen-on-any-other-site "paragliding" swing from Haba.
14.  BobbysBest.com Untitled

Editors of Bobby'sBest.com

Not Dated
reviews rating Bobby's Best is a site that makes one "best" recommendation for a variety of product categories. Under baby swings, the site recommends the Baby Papasan swing, citing its ability to swing in two directions, the plush fabric and the quiet operation. The one negative cited was the swing's automatic shutoff function after seven minutes which, while a safety precaution, the site suggests should be controlled manually. It is not clear, however, why this swing was chosen as the best.
