Feeding: The Best Breast Pumps
Denise and Alan Fields
Seventh Edition, 2007
|
|
Baby Bargains reviews a wide range of baby products including eleven breast pumps. The authors do a good job of explaining the various types of pumps and their features. Ratings are based upon the authors' own observations, manufacturer reputations and parent feedback. Recommendations are given in manual, mini-electric and professional-grade categories.

Readers are invited to post reviews of breast pumps at Amazon.com, where some models receive more than 500 owner-written reviews. While models including the Avent Isis Manual, the Ameda Purely Yours and the Medela Pump in Style all get high average ratings, Amazon.com is perhaps most helpful for identifying breast pumps to avoid. For example, the Evenflo Comfort Select Dual Auto-Cycling Breast Pump, which receives low-average ratings. Mothers cite poor suction, clogged values and discomfort as downsides. The First Years Deluxe Natural Comfort Breast Pump also receives low scores because moms say it is painful to use.

Our Favorite Pumps
Editors of Cerean.net

|
Cerean Breastfeeding reviews manual, electric and hospital grade pumps, but only professional-grade pumps make it into their top six ranking. Their ratings seem to be based on research, manufacturer specifications and user feedback, but nothing explicitly says that. They only review what they consider to be the best breast pumps and avoid brands that also sell baby formula. In addition to reviews and opinion, there's lots of good general information, how-to's, news items and supportive-community articles on this website.

Breastfeeding Magazine contains detailed reviews of a few recommended breast pumps. Their top picks are the Medela Pump in Style Original and the Avent Isis manual. Unfortunately, only five pumps are reviewed, we're not sure who the reviewer is and this site's tight association with a retail website gives us pause. However, we did find some good instructional articles and how-to sections here.

Manual Breast Pumps
Stephanie Brown
As of Nov. 2007

|
About.com's guide to Babies and Toddlers lists four manual breast pumps and, unlike a similar list at About.com in the pregnancy section, Stephanie Brown includes some notes on comfort and ease of use for some, but not all, of the breast pumps here. The Avent Isis manual is her top pick.

Product Review is a user review site based in Australian. Several breast pumps are reviewed, including the Avent Isis and the Medela Pump in Style Advanced, but most pumps earn only a few posts and some models are not available in the United States.

Since ending its association with Amazon.com, Babies "R" Us now allows parents to rate and review products sold on its website. We found a large number of reviews here for breast pumps, but the site is more difficult to navigate than Amazon.com, and there is no way to quickly see how many ratings each pump has accumulated without clicking on the item. As at Amazon.com, the Medela Pump in Style gets high ratings while The First Years pumps are panned for being sometimes painful.

Target sells breast pumps from Medela, Avent, Playtex, Evenflo and Gerber, and readers are invited to leave reviews. As at Babies "R" Us, there are a large number of reviews here, but there's no way to see how many parents have reviewed an item until you click a couple more times. So while a ratings average is included, readers don't know at a glance whether the item has been scored by one or by one hundred people. As at Amazon and other sites, breast pumps from Evenflo and The First Years rate much lower than pumps from Avent and Medela.

Editors of Consumer Reports

|
While there's excellent information here on the various types of breast pumps, Consumer Reports does not test or rate models. Editors list some leading brands and models, but don't actually make specific recommendations. Editors say that renting a breast pump can be a good solution if you don't anticipate needing to express milk for more than three months or so.

Top Electric Breast Pumps
Robin Elise Weiss
Not Dated
|
|
About.com's Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth lists five electric breast pumps and provides basic information on each. There is no evidence of testing, and the short write-ups amount to a one-sentence product description. It's not clear whether Robin Elise Weiss is actually endorsing these models; she merely writes, "Here are some of the best selections available." The general information available on this site is more helpful than this list.

Mumsnet is geared toward European consumers, but there are several user reviews for the Medela Swing, the Medela Pump in Style and the Avent Isis. While there aren't as many reviews here as at Amazon.com, one nice aspect is that Mumsnet summarizes the average rating as well as the number of reviews on one page, so you can easily tell how many mothers have posted comments for each model.

Baby Center offers user reviews of the breast pumps it sells. All receive at least four out of five stars, and all but one are awarded a "Parents' Pick" designation, reducing the usefulness of the rating. As at Target.com, visitors can't tell how many moms have rated each breast pump without more clicking. However, the individual reviews can be helpful, if short.

Berkeley Parents Network is a site where parents and experts can post questions or answers on a wide variety of parenting issues, including a section on breast pumps with general information and a few brand recommendations. While there are very few reviews here, this is a nice non-commercially motivated community website with some helpful parent-to-parent advice.

Best Electric Pumps for Breastfeeding Mothers

Retail site HappyMothers.com includes product specifications for the breast pumps they sell, as well as a handful of user reviews. Most reviewers give very high ratings, even for models that don't so as well on other user review sites. It takes a lot of clicking to get to the reviews, and even then, some models only have one or two comments. Amazon.com is a better, more organized place to find user reviews.

Only four breast pumps are reviewed at ConsumerGuide.com, and all are granted ratings of four or five stars out of five. While some reviews mention some hands-on testing, others don't, so we're unsure who's doing the testing, how many testers might have been involved and how extensive the tester's experience might be.
